  • Ornithologische Forschung Im 20. Jahrhundert in Der Schweiz – Ein Erfolgreiches Miteinander Von Fachleuten Und Laienornithologen
Der Ornithologische Beobachter / Band 106 / Heft 1 / März 2009 3 Ornithologische Forschung im 20. Jahrhundert in der Schweiz – ein erfolgreiches Miteinander von Fachleuten und Laienornithologen Urs N. Glutz von Blotzheim GLUTZ VON BLOTZHEIM, U. N. (2009): Ornithological research in Switzerland in the course of the 20th century – a fruitful collaboration of professionals and amateurs. Ornithol. Beob. 106: 3–48. This contribution is not to be seen as the still missing history of Swiss Orni- thology. (1) Basically there is no space for it here. (2) The Ala was founded as a countrywide society. However, after the foundation of «Nos Oiseaux» in 1913, it became more and more restricted to the German-speaking part of Switzer- land. Therefore this contribution focuses on this part of Switzerland, although the French- or Italian-speaking ornithologists have greatly contributed to the advancement of ornithology in Switzerland. The characteristic fields of Swiss ornithologists are faunistics, migration, conservation biology, morphology and moult. Switzerland belongs to the lead- ing countries with regard to knowledge on the status of birds, their occurrence, their numbers, their breeding biology and migration. The tradition of counting waterbirds is nearly 60 years old. The results have been the basis for a number of important papers on the ecology of waterbirds. The passage of migrants has been studied intensively on several mountain passes. The Col de Cou and Col de Bretolet belong to the most important sites for studying bird migration in Europe. Another long lasting and impressive tradition is the radar ornithol- ogy which began about 1955. It evolved as one of the most successful fields of Swiss ornithology with astonishing contributions not only in or near the Alps but also on the Mediterranean coasts, in the Middle East and in the Mauritanian Sahara.

II. Eulogy by James Tong (65) Eulogy for Fr. Albert Chan S.J. (1915-2005) James Tong Community Chapel Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos March 16, 2005 In the Jesuit Archive in Rome, in the Japan and Chinese Section II, document 159 reads “Itinerandum sinice factum (Travels sojourned in Chinese Style)”. The contents of the 11 folios were some 50 classical Chinese poems, both 5 words and 7 words in a line that were elegant, evocative, pensive, conforming to normative meter and rhyme, about sceneries and thoughts in journeys in five cities in China. I have been in academia in the last 30 years, and I know of no non-native Chinese professor in classical Chinese literature in any top university in U.S. or Europe who can write such classical Chinese poems. The note on the document adds, nullum nomen (no name), nullum datum (no date). Until Fr. Chan did the research and published it in Monumenta Serica in 1993, the world did not know that they were authored by Michele Ruggieri, the Italian Jesuit in China who lived and traveled with Mateo Ricci in China 400 years ago. What is even more remarkable is that Ruggieri was 41 years old when he began studying Chinese, at a time when there were no Chinese-Western dictionary, no Chinese language classes or language schools for non-native speakers. The piece of research serves to illustrate two other characteristics that the life and work of the early Jesuits in China shared with those of Fr. Chan. First, the accomplishments of both the early Jesuits and Fr.

He threw himself whole heartedly into the study of Navyanyaya and soon came to be recognized as one of the leading authorities in Navyanyaya. Vattanky firmly believed that it is only in the absolute that human being is able to explain himself and the Nyaya thinkers do so when they discuss nature, the dimension and the properties of human knowledge. In fact, according to Nyaya a proper self-understanding of human being is not possible without the absolute. In other words, human being cannot understand himself properly except in the absolute; and so it follows inevitably that he is able to develop himself and realize his full destiny only in a relationship with the T. journal of jesuit studies 6 (2019) 196-212 brill.com/jjs Girolamo Muziano, Scipione Pulzone, and the First Generation of Jesuit Art John Marciari The Morgan Library & Museum, New York [email protected] Abstract While Bernini and other artists of his generation would be responsible for much of the decoration at the Chiesa del Gesù and other Jesuit churches, there was more than half a century of art commissioned by the Jesuits before Bernini came to the attention of the order. Many of the early works painted in the 1580s and 90s are no longer in the church, and some do not even survive; even a major monument like Girolamo Muzia- no’s Circumcision, the original high altarpiece, is neglected in scholarship on Jesuit art. This paper turns to the early altarpieces painted for the Gesù by Muziano and Scipione Pulzone, to discuss the pictorial and intellectual concerns that seem to have guided the painters, and also to some extent to speculate on why their works are no longer at the Gesù, and why these artists are so unfamiliar today. l AQUATIC MICROBIAL ECOLOGY Vol. 11: 31-41, 1996 Published August 29 Aquat Microb Ecol 1 I Horizontal variability of bacterioplankton growth dynamics in a large lake Ingeborg Reichart, Meinhard Simon* Limnological Institute, University of Constance, PO Box 5560 X 913, D-78434 Konstanz, Germany ABSTRACT: We examined the horizontal variability of bacterioplankon growth dynamics in the west- ern part of Lake Constance, Germany, including its northwestern fjord-like arm, Lake Uberlingen. From May until September 1993, we measured depth profiles of bacterioplankton abundance and pro- duction as well as temperature and chlorophyll at 7 stations on the same day or on 2 consecutive days. In addition, we examined the horizontal distribution of bacterioplankton growth with a higher area1 resolution In Lake Uberlingen in August 1993 and May 1994 by collecting samples from the upper 20 m at 10 statlons on 4 occasions. In August 1994 we also measured these growth dynamics in 1 km2 in the center of Lake Uberlingen by sampling 9 stations. The results show that the variability of bacterio- plankton production was more pronounced than that of abundance and that the variability was always greatest in the upper 10 m. Total horizontal variability of bacterioplankton production ranged from <2- to 8-fold but in most cases remained <3-fold. Greatest variabilities always occurred at the transitions between different seasonal phases such as the phytoplankton spring bloom and clear-water phase or clear-water phase and phytoplankton summer bloom. On the basis of the coefficient of variation of the horizontal mean of production rates [standard error/mean) variability in the total study area and in Lake Uberlingen was greater than that in 1 km2 in the center of Lake Uberlingen, which was still greater than the within-sample variation.

  • Long-Term Changes in the Water Level of Lake Constance and Possible Causes
Hydrology of Natural and Manmade Lakes (Proceedings of the Vienna Symposium, August 1991). IAHS Publ. no. 206, 1991. Long-term changes in the water level of Lake Constance and possible causes G. LUFT Landesanstalt fur Umweltschutz Baden-Wiirttemberg, Abt. 4: Wasser, Benzstrafie 5, D-7500 Karlsruhe 21 (F.R.G.) G. VAN DEN EERTWEGH Agricultural University Wageningen, Department of Hydrology, Soil Physics, and Hydraulics, NL-6709 PA Wageningen, formerly Landesanstalt fur Umweltschutz Baden-Wiirttemberg ABSTRACT Lake Constance is a natural reservoir system consisting of two parts, Obersee and Untersee. River Rhine flows through the lake. At the lakeside and in shallow shore zones, erosion and vegeta tion damages have been observed. Long-term changes in the water-level can be one of the causes of erosion processes and were investigated in this study. Also possible causes of these changes were taken into consideration. The results of frequency and trend analysis and Gaussian low pass filtering show that the water level of Lake Constance and its regime has changed. Mean annual water levels (Untersee), discharges (Alpenrhein and Hochrhein), and areal precipitation depths have remained nearly constant. Peak water levels and discharges have dropped, low water levels and discharges have increased. On the contrary, the mean annual water level of Obersee has dropped, low water levels have remained constant. The changes in water level have probably been caused by changes of hydraulic conditions in the outflow-regions of the lake. This process has been superposed by development and operation of storage reservoirs (hydropower purposes) in the catchment area of the Alpenrhein. Its seasonal runoff regime has been strongly influenced by an increase of low discharge, predominantly in the winter and a decrease of peak discharge in the summer.
