JNANADEEPA PJRS ISSN 0972-3331 24/2 July-Dec 2020: 77-96 Integral Humanism of the Nyaya: Prof. Dr. John Vat- tanky’s Philosophical Under- standing of the Human Being in the Society Thomas Karimundackal SJ Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune 41104 Abstract: Prof. John Vattanky is one of the few scholars in Indian philosophy who integrated the Western scientific method of research with the traditional Indian method of interpreting the Nyaya texts. He threw himself whole heartedly into the study of Navyanyaya and soon came to be recognized as one of the leading authorities in Navyanyaya. Vattanky firmly believed that it is only in the absolute that human being is able to explain himself and the Nyaya thinkers do so when they discuss nature, the dimension and the properties of human knowledge. In fact, according to Nyaya a proper self-understanding of human being is not possible without the absolute. In other words, human being cannot understand himself properly except in the absolute; and so it follows inevitably that he is able to develop himself and realize his full destiny only in a relationship with the T. Introduction It is well known that in contemporary Western philosophy, especially under the influence of Gadamer, Ricoeur, and so on, hermeneutics and allied disciplines are assuming more and more significance. The influence of these hermeneutical theories has gradually been felt also on present day Indian thought. What, however, is not so well known even among Indian philosophers themselves is that India had a long and distinguished history of theories of interpretation. Mimāmsa system, for example, tried to lay down the rules of interpretation in order to arrive at the true meaning of the Vedas.1 The discipline of Grammar, which again had a long history in India, reached its philosophical heights in the path-breaking works of Bharthari.2 Philosophers of Grammar had to struggle with the problem of meaning and in some ways also with the question of interpretation. In the Nyāya system, discussions on the philosophy of language and theories of interpretation were carried on largely in the context of the discussions on śabda (word), as a means of valid verbal knowledge. There is no treatise exclusively on interpretation as such in the modern sense. Yet, on the basis of what the Naiyāyikas have contributed towards a philosophy of language, we can construct a theory of interpretation adequate to meet the philosophical challenges of today. The present essay is an attempt to develop such a Prof. Dr. John Vattanky sj, trained in philosophy at Oxford and Vienna, is a well-known expert in Sanskrit language and Indian Logic. -

In the wake of the discovery of the heritage of India by the great orientalists of the western wdrld, especially from the beginning of this century and after the pioneering works ofRadhakrishnan, Dasgupta and a host of others, various aspects of Indian thought have been studied more and more deeply 'and m eticulously. However, Indian philosophy 'vas pictured predominantly in terms of Vedanta particularly in its advaita form found in Sankara which was and is, perhaps, not entirely correctly interpreted as a monistic system. This went along with a very spiritual interpretation of the wh ole of Indian culture. In fact this is a one-sided presentation of the whole of Indian philosophy, for Indian philosophy includes various systems which command the attention of the scholar as well as the general reader. One such system is the Nyaya. In the extent of the literature it has produced and in the depth of the philosophical problems it discusses, it is of considerable interest and importance. However, the spirit of pure rationality in which Nyiiya discusses these proble ms and the techniques it makes use of in handling them are quite different from oth er systems of Indian thought and at on ce renders it a unique achievement of the Indian mind. Nyiiya has been sedulously cultiyated in restricted circles of traditional learning. -

THE ARGUMENT FROM WHOLES: A CLASSICAL HINDU DESIGN ARGUMENT FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD John Kronen and Sandra Menssen All wholes are made by an intelligent agent; some wholes were not made by an embodied agent; so, some things made by an intelligent agent were not made by an embodied agent. Such was the basic argument for God’s existence defended by Udayana, the greatest of the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika philoso- phers, in his Kiraṇāvalī. Our paper explicates this argument and highlights its merits. The Argument and Its Tradition The Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika1 philosophical school is one of the so-called “Or- thodox” or Hindu schools of Indian thought, with roots that antedate the birth of Christ, and several long periods of glory, including one that ran from about the fifth century through the eleventh and culminated in the writings of Udayana. -

Proof for the Existence of God in Classical Indian Philosophy
1 PROOF FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD IN CLASSICAL INDIAN PHILOSOPHY JOHN VATTANKY De Nobilli College, Pune, India Abstract. Both in the East and in the West, there is, apart from the religious ap- proach to God, also a purely rational one. Although in India philosophical specula- tion on God was mostly inextricably bound to religion, there have also been purely rational developments in Indian Theodicy. This is the case above all in the Nyâyavaiúe·ika system, where we find a purely rational and logical approach to the question of the existence and nature of God. It is the specific contribution of the Nyâyavaiúe·ika system to have developed a purely logical and rational argument for the existence of God. My purpose here is to take this proof in its developed form, as it is found in Gaºgea, and investigate its philosophical and logical implications. The question of the existence of God is central to the philosophical tradi- tions of both East and West. Most of the great philosophers in the Western tradition admit that there is an Absolute, the transcendent cause of the ma- terial universe. Plato, Plotinus, Thomas Aquinas and others belong to this tradition. In the Indian philosophical tradition, the question of the Absolute also plays a pivotal role. This is the case not only with regard to the Advaita Vedanta, which by definition is a non-dualistic system of philosophy; other systems, like Nyya, also give to God a central role in their philosophical speculations. Creative thinkers like aºkara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Gautama the founder of Nyya system, Vatsyâyana Paksilaswamin, Uddyotakara, Vâcaspati Miúra, Udayana, Gaºge§a, Bhartrhari the great philosopher of Grammar, and a host of others, accept a transcendent Absolute, whatever characteristics they may ascribe to it. -

CHAPTER 6: GOD A noteworthy feature of the Nyāya tradition is its rational theology, its effort to prove the existence of God (Īśvara) by argument alone. To use the language of Nyāya, it attempts to establish God’s existence and some general sense of his nature through inference (anumāna), the second of the four knowledge sources, as opposed to sacred texts, which are one subtype of testimony (śabda). In the early school, a few theistic arguments are developed by commentators in connection with sūtras 4.1.19-21, the “theistic sūtras.” Beginning with Udayana, a separate, complex literature emerges, with dozens of arguments. Since in the Nyāya-sūtra itself, not including the commentaries, the Lord is not invoked outside the theistic sūtras, some modern interpreters have speculated that Nyāya was originally atheistic or at least agnostic. The entire classical tradition, however, takes the sūtras to endorse a brand of theism, and our commentators use them to launch a rational theology centered on the notion of īśvara, a being who assembles the manifest world out of eternal, indivisible atoms and governs it according to the karmic merit of individual selves. Vātsyāyana, our earliest commentator, reads the sūtras as devoted to showing compatibility between God's power and karma. He does not argue in any detail to establish the existence of īśvara, although he does sketch out the creator’s nature. But Uddyotakara and all later classical commentators argue explicitly and elaborately that God exists while also articulating in broad outline what they see as the divine nature. Nyāya's theology seems rather minimalist compared to, say, Vedānta's notion of Brahman, the Absolute.
