FAT I ORAL EUSEAU OF STANDARDS GEHEKAL IFFOSI AT I OF Character of Researches The paper research of the Fa.tional Bureau of Standards consists of studies re- lated to the standardization2. of paper and the materials and processes used in its manufacture. The work on the standardization of paper leads to formulation of standards of quality, and includes, necessarily, the development of means of measuring quality. Eor research related to the manufacture of paper, the paper section is equipped with complete lahoratory and semi- commercial papermaking facilities. This is used to o’: tain information which will assist the paper maker in obtaining the desired qualities in paper at a minimum of cost, in developing new or improved paper products, and in utilizing new fibrous raw materials, parti- cularly waste materials. General3. Scope of Bureau Work The Bureau of Standards is charged with the development, construction, custody, and maintenance of reference and working standards, and their intercomparison, im- provement, and application in science, engineering, industry, and commerce. The bureau is organized in three principal groups - research and testing; commercial standardization; administrative4. work, operation of plant, and construction of lab- oratory instruments and apparatus . The following divisions comprise the research and testing group; electricity, weights and measures, heat and power, optics, chemistry, mechanics ana sound, organic and fibrous materials, metallurgy, clay and silicate products. The Commercial Standardization group consists of three divisions; simplified practice, specifications, and trade standards. The research and testing divisions are made up of 6S sections each of which deals with a parti- cular branch .of the divisional work. Description of List This list includes not only research reports of the paper section dealing prim- arily with paper, hut --Iso reports from other sections of work relating to paper. Publications not listed are those which have become more or less obsolete through being superseded by later publications or because they contained information of temporary value only. The publications arc listed in chronological order and are arranged in groups dealing with the same general subject. How to Obtain Publications The reports of the investigations are published either in Government publica- tions or in outside publications. The bureau usually receives reprints of the articles published outside a/nd furnishes those available free of charge. Copies . 2 - of the publications can be consulted in many of the larger libraries. Where the price is noted, the publication may be purchased from the Superintendent of Docu- ments, Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. The prices quoted are for delivery to addresses in the United States and its possessions, and to Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Newfoundland, the Philippines, and the Republic of Panama. When re- mitting ± 01 delivery to countries other than those, include in your remittance one- third of the total cost of publications to cover postage. Recovery of paraffin and paper stock from waste paraffin paper*. Washington: Government Printing Office, 10l6. 4 p. (U.S. Bureau of Standards, Tech. Papers No. 8j). In order to recover the paraffin and paper stock in waste paraffin paper, a process is described utilizing a vertical steam boiler, tanks for receiving the paraffin, and a beater. The waste is pulped with exhaust steam. The wax rises to the surface and the paper stock settles in the boiler. In the beater the stock is treated with an alkaline solution in hot water to remove ink. The residual wax is collected on a metal cylinder, internally water chilled, and partly submerged in the hot water of the beater. Paper prepared from the recovered stock was free from wax and en- tirely satisfactory. Practically all of the paper stock is recovered, but about 10 percent of the paraffin is lost. Smith, ¥. H. Samples of paper pulps, each representing a different method of prepara- tion and with one exception of American manufacture, have been examined to determine their chemical properties. These consist of the amount of ash, cellulose and methoxyl, the yield of furfural and methyl- furfural and the copper number. Using the same pulps, the loss in weight pro- duced by reagents causing oxidation and hydrolysis and the increase in weight when nitrated have been determined. The effects of sunlight, temperature, and ozonized air on the chemical constants obtained with ground wood have been ascertained. Clark, and Durgin, G. P. C. , A. Couching properties of wet felts*. Paper Industry 1, ITo. 12; 1115-7 (March, 1920). Addition of 10 percent of cotton to felt does not materially alter its structure or properties. A little more steam was required to dry the sheets from the cotton-wool felt. This quantity was very small. Somewhat inferior in couching properties to the wool felt. An average of 6.8 per- cent less water was removed by the cotton-wool felt. It appears that there wore less openings through the cotton-wool felt than through the all wool p R 4- Shaw, M. B. , and Bi eking, G. U. Rubber latex in paper. The effect of adding rubber latex to the beater in the experimental manufacture of book and wrapping paper. Paper Trade J. ZA, Uo. 26: 53-95 (Doc. 22, 1922). This work gives first the claims made by P. Kaye, the inventor of the process of adding rubber latex to paper. This is followed by a discussion 0" the source, characteristics and method of analysis of the latex. Test runs were made on one and two percent rubber. The data did not show any definite improvements in paper to which latex had been added, the differ- ences being those ordinarily found in any paper. There was a. slight in- crease in bursting strength on book papers. The paper having latex in it , . Successive analyses of the same papers with increasing age indicates a comparatively rapid oxidation of the rubber retained in paper as a result of adding latex to the "beater Within the limits of the investi- gation the oxidation was observed to be most rapid in the case of paper mode of sulphite and sola pulp and least rapid in the case of rag papers. Whether textured or smooth, pre- cious or disposable, these hardy amalgams of hydrogen-bonded fibers have changed the world many times over. For centuries, human history has been both literally written on the surface of paper and embedded deep within its structure. In folded and bound form, mats of cellulose fibers ushered in the Enlightenment; by enabling multiple iterations and revisions of an idea to span generations, they have facilitated the design of airships and skyscrapers, or the blueprints and calculations that made possible the first human footsteps on the moon. Generally speaking, we continue to recognize paper by a few basic characteristics: it is most often thin, portable, flexible, and readily ac- cepting of ink or inscription. There is, however, a particular sheet that is superlatively impressive, exhibiting an unintentional and unpreten- tious type of beauty. At first glance and in direct light, it may trick you into thinking it is merely ordinary paper; when backlit, the care- ful viewer may detect subtle hints of its historical pedigree via telltale watermarks or chain and laid lines.

Paper is indispensable in our daily life for many purposes. It conveys a fantastic variety and volume of messages and information of all kinds via its use in printing and writing-personal and business letters, newspapers, pamphlets, posters, magazines, mail order catalogs, telephone directories, comic books, school books, novels, etc. It is difficult to imagine the modern world without paper. Paper is used to wrap packages. It is also used to make containers for shipping goods ranging from food and drugs to clothing and machinery. We use it as wrappers or containers for milk, ice cream, bread, butter, meat, fruits, cereals, vegetables, potato chips, and candy; to carry our food and department store purchases home in; for paper towels, cellophane, paper handkerchiefs and sanitary tissues; for our notebooks, coloring books, blotting paper, memo pads, holiday greeting and other “special occasion’’ cards, playing cards, library index cards; for the toy hats, crepe paper decorations, paper napkins, paper cups, plates, spoons, and forks for our parties. Paper is used in building our homes and schools-in the form of roofing paper, and as paperboard- heavy, compressed product made from wood pulp-which is used for walls and partitions, and in such products as furniture. Paper is also used in linerboard, “cardboard,” and similar containers. Wood pulp is the principal fibrous raw material from which paper is made, and over half of the wood cut in this country winds up in some form of paper products.

    THE METHOD OF MAKING MODELS FROM SI-IEETS OF BLOTTING PAPER. BY SUSANNA PHELPS GAGE. Ithaca, New York. The Born Method of reconstructing models from wax plates is in use in all the larger laboratories of Anatomy and Embryology. Various modifications of that method have been introduced, notably at Johns IIopkins University. For smaller laboratories and isolated investigators the wax plates are difficult to prepare or to obtain already made. More- over, in the larger laboratories ihe preparation of the plates is a much dreaded piece of drudgery to be done in the basement. The apparatus is cumbersome and if at all accurate, expensive. Like any other ap- paratus it requires some skill to use it with success. Any one who has either cast or rolled wax plates will not need a statement of the inconveniences. In 1905, it occurred to me that sheets of blotting paper might serve instead of wax plates. A small model was at once made which showed its feasibility. Models made of this material were demonstrated at thc Association of American Anatomists in December, 1905, ( Amer. Jour. Anat. V., 1905-06, p. XXIII) and the method was further demonstrated at the International Zoological Congress held in Boston, August, 1907'. It has also been used successfully in the embryologic and anatomic laboratories of Cornell University and the University of West Virginia. Blotting paper models were demonstrated by Dr. J. H. Hathaway and by Dr. J. B. Johnston at the Association of American Anatomists held in New York, 1906 (Proc. Assoc. Amer. Anatomists, Anat. Record, April 1, 1907,).

These papers are produced by specially formulated compositions and manufacturing procedures that make them particularly vulnerable to damage as well as reactive to solvents used in conservation treatments. In order to evaluate the effects of solvents on such papers, several research projects were designed to consider the variables of paper composition, properties, and aging, as well as type of solvent and technique of solvent application. This paper summarizes findings for materials characterization, degradative effects of aging, and some effects of solvents used for stain reduction, and humidification and flattening, of pigment-coated and modern tracing papers. Pigment-coated papers have been used, virtually since the beginning of papermaking history, for their special properties of gloss and brightness. These properties, however, may render coated papers more susceptible to certain types of damage (surface marring, embedded grime, and stains) and more reactive to certain conservation treatments. Several research projects have been undertaken to characterize paper coating compositions (by SEM/EDS and FTIR) and appearance properties (by SEM imaging of surface structure and quantitative measurements of color and gloss) in order to evaluate changes that might occur following application of solvents used in conservation treatments.

You can lessen this situation by lifting the mat(s) up off the painting by inserting strips of mat board or foam board behind the mats to make a generous space for the dust to fall into. (See Figure 2) The dust will settle on the mat bevels and every time the frame is jostled the dust will filter down between the mat and the glass.     Waste Management and the Environment IX 125 RECYCLING POTENTIAL OF TEXTILE SOLID WASTE MOHAMMAD FAHIM HASAN, NOWRIN MOW, MOHAMMAD RAKIBUL ALAM, SARDAR MOHAMMAD ABIR HASAN & ROWSHAN MAMTAZ Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh ABSTRACT With increasing production of textile products, textile industries (TIs) are generating a considerable amount of liquid and solid wastes which bring in many adverse impacts on the environment such as landfill occupation, contamination of air, soil, surface water, and groundwater. In Bangladesh, while prioritizing the disposal and management of textile liquid wastes, the necessity of management of textile solid wastes (TSWs) are often neglected. TSW is generated in a considerable amount but no proper management or disposal system is followed by the industries. An attempt has been made in this study to find a sustainable disposal option for TSW. The experiments were conducted throughout 2016. This research is concerned with a particular type of solid waste, very dusty in composition, generated from slitting, brushing and sueding machine in the dyeing unit of the composite TI. Using this particular type of TSW, papermaking was attempted following manual procedures. TSW at ten different ratios were added to scrap abandoned paper mixture (paper : waste = 1 : 0.25, 1 : 0.5, 1 : 0.75, 1 : 1, 1 : 1.5, 1 : 2, 1 : 2.25, 1 : 2.5, 1 : 2.75, 1 : 3, etc.) to produce papers. A pulp consistency test and different tests on produced paper e.g. basis weight, bulk, and density, book bulk, thickness, hygroexpansivity, formation, moisture, and finish were conducted according to Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) methods and ISO standards were followed to determine the quality of pulp and type of papers.
