Summary Report on Forests of the Mataqali Nadicake Kilaka, Kubulau District, Bua, Vanua Levu
SUMMARY REPORT ON FORESTS OF THE MATAQALI NADICAKE KILAKA, KUBULAU DISTRICT, BUA, VANUA LEVU By Gunnar Keppel (Biology Department, University of the South Pacific) INTRODUCTION I was approached by Dr. David Olson of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to assess the type, status and quality of the forest in Kubulau District, Bua, Vanua Levu. I initially spent 2 days, Friday (28/10/2005) afternoon and the whole of Saturday (29/10/2005), in Kubulau district. This invitation was the result of interest by some landowning family clans (mataqali) to protect part of their land and the offer by WCS to assist in reserving part of their land for conservation purposes. On Friday I visited two forest patches (one logged about 40 years ago and another old-growth) near the coast and Saturday walking through the forests in the center of the district. Because of the scarcity of data obtained (and because the forest appeared suitable for my PhD research), I decided to return to the district for a more detailed survey of the northernmost forests of Kubulau district from Saturday (12/11/2005) to Tuesday (22/11/2005). Upon returning, I found out that the mataqali Nadicake Nadi had abandoned plans to set up a reserve and initiated steps to log their forests. Therefore, I decided to focus my research on the land of the mataqali Nadicake Kilaka only. My objectives were the following: 1) to determine the types of vegetation present 2) to produce a checklist of the flora and, through this list, identify rare and threatened species in the reserve 3) to undertake a quantitative survey of the northernmost forests (lowland tropical rain forest) by setting up 4 permanent 50 ×50m plots 4) to assess the status of the forests 5) to determine the state and suitability of the proposed reserve 6) to assess possible threats to the proposed reserve. -

VANUAYU PALMS: THEIR DISTRIBUTION AND UsEs Pierre Cabalion ORSTOM, Paris Translated by Marie Trefeu, edited by J.L. Dowe Introduction: Vanuatu Plant Collections in the World , Knowledge of the Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides) flora has developed in several stages, the last two Compendia published by Guillaumin in 1927 (1) and 1948 (2). ' Since then many collections have been made; by botanists of the 1971 Royal Society Expedition (3); by ORSTOM (4), ethnobotanists and botanists from Noumea to 1979 and then from Port Vila; and in the field of Bryophytes by American scientists (5)in 1984 and 1985. No general and systematic work on the flora has been published since 1948. In 1979, when 1 began my work on Vanuatu traditional pharmocology, I required good determinations for my samples. As information was to be found in numerous books arid articles which often were not available in Vanuatu, this task was not easy. With a certain amount of innocence, I began to collect every published line on the flora of Vanuatu and compiled the literature under names of collector and identification of the specimens. At the same time, the Port Vila Herbarium (YVNH, proposed to be PVV) was developed lo a nomial standard sending three parts on four to other herbaria; one to Paris (P), one to Noumea (N OU) and one to Kew (K) or a specialist Although these two projects are not finished, we now have a better idea of the location of Vanuatu i botanical collections in the world. In the Pacific region, the richest institutions for Vanuatu specimens are Port Vila, Noumea, Sydney r (NSW and SYD), Melbourne (MEL)and the Bishop Museum (BISH) in Hawaii. -
Conservation Status of New Caledonia Palms
Conservation status of New Caledonia palms J.-C. PINTAUD," T. JAFFRÉ~and J.-M. VEILLON' An assessment of the conservation status of the palm species occuring in New Caledonia is provided, based on the new IUCN Red List categories. To determine the conservation status of each species, their extent of occurrence was determined using locality data on herbarium collections. Area of occupancy, number of adults, regeneration, and threats were evaluated on 62 localities throughout the Territory, including all types of palm habitats and all localities of species occurring at less than five sites. Among the 37 palm species known in New Caledonia, all are endemic and 13 are in a threatened category, including four critically endangered, one endangered, and eight vulnerable. Only four of the threatened species are represented in a reserve. Six species are listed as LRcd since they are adequately protected in a reserve despite an acute restriction of their range. Recommendations are given to improve the network of protected areas to include more threatened species. Key words: New Caledonia, Palms, Reserves, Conservation. A new species belonging to the genus Proxylastodoris Heiss & Popov, 2002, P. kuscheli spec. nov., of the subfamily Xylastodorinae Barber, 1920 (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) is described from New Cal- edonia. It is the first recent record outside the western Hemisphere of the Xyalstodorinae and is the largest known member of the family Thaumastocoridae. The new species was collected on inflores- cences of the native New Caledonian palm species Burretiokentia vieillardii (Brongn. & Gris) Pichi- Serm. The habitat, collecting methods, host plant and biology of the new species are described. The biogeography of the Thaumastocoridae and Xylastodorinae is discussed and suggestions for further research are proposed. This discovery is characterised as the discovery of a living fossil as the new species is assigned to the genus Proxylastodoris, previously a monotypic genus described from Baltic amber. -

We detected HCN production in only two species of one genus, Drymophloeus. Additional smaller surveys of shoot meristems and roots revealed cyanogenesis only in the shoot meristem of one species of Dypsis. Our results indicate that cyanogenesis is rather rare in the family. Introduction Cyanide production is a widespread phenomenon in plants, with cyanogenic compounds present in many species across the plant kingdom (Hegnauer, 1977). These compounds are often ecologically signi"cant and can be hazardous to human health when they occur in crop plants. Although cyanogenesis has arisen indepen- dently in several lineages, it is a good taxonomic marker for several groups of plants (e.g., Passi#oraceae; Olafsdottir et al., 1989). Cyanogenic plants typically store cyanide in the form of cyanogenic glycosides. These plants release HCN only after tissue damage brings apoplastic {-glucosidases into contact with vacuolar glycosides. Some phenotypically acyanogenic plants * Corresponding author.
