A warm welcome Albany United, your players, coaching staff and supporters who have crossed the bridge for today’s clash. This is an important game for both teams. We hope to see you all in the clubrooms after the game for our hospitality. I would like to also extend a warm welcome to our new sponsor Auckland Abrasive Blast and Coatings (2005) Ltd, as well as those who have supported us long and hard this season. The past fortnight our men’s team has had two big games. A fortnight ago the guys played in the Chatham Cup up at Stanmore Bay against Hibiscus Coast and although they didn’t come away victors they certainly gave it their all. In fact to the point a penalty shootout had to decide who would advance to the next cup round. A credit must go to Mark, Scotty, Preston and Sean, as well as the boys, for the efforts they are putting in this season. Our women’s teams have been going well across all grades and representing Papatoetoe well, may your efforts be paid off with some results and a few w’s next to your team name. Our Senior men’s teams have been showing good form as well and we congratulate you all on the results your teams have had. We hope you continue to succeed in your grades. Credit must also be paid to Adrian King and our junior teams. Reports of your results have been good and we congratulate all involved in your successes. It is encouraging to see some talented players coming through our junior system and we hope one day you will go onto be our men’s and women’s first team players. Club wise we continue to strive to meet the needs and expectations of our members. At times this may not be achieved however we can assure members we as a committee do the best we can to make the club what it is and one we want our members to be a part of and proud to call Papatoetoe AFC their club. We will very soon be looking at a plan for the future of the club and the direction we want to head in. In doing this we will be liaising with you, our members, on what your needs and wants are. This will be a fair process but one we want to be accurately to get the best action plan and direction for the club. Next weekend our Men’s 1st and Reserve teams have a big clash in an away game against Manukau at 12.30 pm and 3pm. It would be great to get as many supporters there as we can. Once again welcome to Albany United, we hope you enjoy your day here. See you all after the game in the clubrooms. Hans Anema, Executive Committee 3 Opposition History In 1977 Albany-Wairau Soccer Club was spawned by a group of people that were from Glenfield Rovers and decided that they would form their own club. The ‘defectors’ were Bert Ford and Len Snelling and along with a group of players, they soon recruited the likes of Eric Hodge and Dave Weir to assist them. A ‘home’ ground was secured at the Albany Domain. In that first season they only expected to have a couple of teams but ended up fielding 15 in total. The first team’s inaugural coach was Fred Ullness and they played in an open social grade. It wasnt until 1979 that the club qualified for what was then the Northern 4th division. Though this period can be summarised in a few paragraphs, the work that was put in by Ford and Snelling should not be underestimated. Fundraising, getting sponsors, negotiations with council, constitutional matters and gear all needed to be in place before the season started. In fact, Albany’s first strip was nothing more than an orange tee shirt with black shorts, and the ‘showers’ were the local stream that meandered past the grounds. The toilet block was built by Bert Ford in his spare time as was the infamous ‘Shed’. The shed has since been demolished but Bert’s toilets are still in existance. Were told the floodlights were installed ‘for a slab’ but nobody has been prepared to offer any more information on this matter!! In 2010 the re-introduction of the Northern League saw Albany’s re-introduction into the Northern Premier League for grading purposes. Losing out by one point to make the cut off for the Premier League in 2011, we had a second line in the Division 1b th league but only managed 5 place in the standings. 4 5 6 Club News Our condolences go out to two club families this week; NRFL coach Mark Holt on the death of his grandmother and junior coach Job Palalagi on the death of his father. Our thoughts are with you all. On a happier note, two club members with upcoming birthdays – Hans Anema who turns 26 on Monday and An Slecht, who shows no signs of slowing down, turns 80 on Tuesday. Best wishes to you both. Congratulations to Over 40s player Junior Ioane and his partner who are the recent proud parents of a baby girl. Congratulations to the following club members who were acknowledged at the Papatoetoe Sports Awards held at Kolmar on Sunday 22 May: Paul Margison – Services to Sport (daughter Kendall receiving the award on his behalf). Paul has now moved to a rehab unit and Kendall advises he has made considerable progress in the last few days. Visitors welcome. Team of the Year – Women’s Division 3 Cougars Sportswoman of the Year – Shontelle Stevens Sportsman of the Year – Logan Clark While our nominees were not winners on the night they are all key members of our club.
