COACHES COMMENTS

Good Afternoon everyone and welcome to back to Murdoch Park for our round 6 clash against Ellerslie AFC. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the coaching/management staff and players of Ellerslie AFC.

The last two weeks have been both tough but also constructive.

Following on from our game against Hibiscus Coast I sat down with the boys at Tuesdays training and we went over what we feel we need to change or alter in order to perform to the level we are capable of doing so.

Against Takapuna last Saturday I along with the lads were eager to keep our goal of not losing at home in tact but also gain our first three points. The game was a good tussle and with scoring first we were off to a good start. However Takapuna did not give up and thought strong to come back and take the win 4-2. I was pleased however to see some of the areas we went over in training be improved on.

Away to Metro on Monday we knew we had to pick up points here. Metro sat just above us on the table and we knew points were needed to avoid being left behind on the table. Metro however came out and played some good football and in doing so took the win

To today’s game and back on home turf we will be pushing and doing all we can to pick up points on offer. It is still very early in the season and I know and am confident in the team turning things around and putting a smile on our fans and supporters faces.

See you all afterwards in the bar.

Reserve team

Good Afternoon all, welcome to today’s game. Welcome to Ellerslie AFC and your Teams and Coaching Staff.

At home last week against Takapuna we had a classic arm wrestle battle. I must acknowledge and thank those other players who stepped up and helped out from other teams in the club due to player shortage it was good to see some of the old boys back in the team. The first half we played some good football and were rewarded with a goal. To however chase in the second half though was not as good. However the boys stayed committed and thought until the end and in the last few minutes of the game we were able to snatch an equalizer and take a draw along with another point to add to the season tally.

On Monday away to Metro this was a classic goal fest match. Conceding within the first few minutes of the match but then to score literally on the restart set the vibe for the match and showed it could pan out to be a goal fest for both teams. The lads thought once again right to the very end of the game and did not give up and in doing so gained a draw and another point. Credit to Faraz who pulled off some great saves in goal.

To today’s game and I know the lads will be keen to claim their first win of the season on home soil. If previous weeks results are a sign to go by then we can feel positive about the potential of doing so.

Best of luck to both teams and enjoy the game.

Meet our men’s and women’s club captains

WOMEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN Ave stevens:

I am not only thrilled, but I feel honoured to have been chosen as the Women's Club Captain this year. Not only does it mean that I get to talk more, I now have a legitimate reason to catch up and chat to anybody that comes through to the club doors. Whether people are coming purely for a visit, to watch a game, or to check out what's happening in the local community, I now have a further purpose to welcome them to our club.

I pride myself on being the kind of person who can help and guide you to the right place and to give assistance as required. As Club Captain I will be guided by three principles: 1. I am willing to listen 2. I am willing to accept advice 3. I will do my best to help you (and if I am not able to, I’ll point you in the right direction)

Although the majority of the season will possibly just fly by and most of you will continue with your week-to-week trainings and games, I will still attempt to visit everyone as much as I can. I might pop in and lend a hand to the little ones, help referee a junior or youth game, or even just serve you hot chips from our kitchen.

To use a football analogy, it is usually the last five minutes of a game that is the real test, when things start to get a bit frantic and tension kicks in as the team chases the desired result. Being part of a football club also has those mad five minutes on a day- to-day basis, and as Women’s Club Captain, I hope to be the person that you can come to in those times to help alleviate stress and achieve the best result for yourself and our club.

What I wish to focus on this year as Women’s Club Captain is simple:

• To communicate with fellow team members and provide support and advice where needed • To contribute to the development of the club through providing advice and guidance from multiple perspectives (ie. As a player, a parent, a coach, a manager, etc) • To work in conjunction with the Women's Football Coordinator and liaise closely with coaches and managers during the season • To continuously work on gaining sponsorship, donations and grants for our club 6

I wish from the bottom of my heart to thank everyone for all their hard work so far, that we continue on this great path that has been set for us, and I hope to contribute and build on top of those foundations. It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those life members and pioneers began more than 54 years ago and help the club to continue to grow stronger year upon year.

Please feel free to stop me to introduce yourself, and let me know if I can be of assistance in any way,

Men’s club captain savuth thay:

Welcome all to Papatoetoe AFC, I am Savuth (also known as Bhuty) and I am the Men's Club Captain for the 2014 season.

Most of you will have seen me around at some stage either playing or supporting the various teams and functions. I first came to the club in 2008 from local rivals Manurewa to play Reserve grade and eventually made my First Team debut the following year. Since then I have been playing for the Men’s First team and more recently Reserves. I have also coached the various Ladies teams for a number of years and am currently coaching the Ladies Division 3 "Cougars".

When I'm not at football I like to get out and drive or play golf, also enjoying a nice cold beverage with friends. I like Papatoetoe AFC because it's like a second home with all the friendly people, the canny ones (Scotty) and the club has some good history behind it. There has been some good players that have come through the club such as Victor Konusi, Jordan Pierce, Keith Bright who have inspired me to be the player I am now and the football here isn't bad either.

With my role in the club I hope I can provide a voice for people on any issues. Helping people out when they need a hand and providing the support required to get the club on the rise. I hope people get behind the club and support it, the teams and the people as much as they can and make this a club that everyone enjoys just like I do.

Good luck to all the players, coaches, supporters and volunteers and everyone else for the season and I hope to see you around the club.

Savuth (Bhuty)

Women’s update

Papatoetoe AFC recently competed in the Auckland City FC U17s Youth Tournament, held at Western Springs’ Seddon Fields. The girls played in the 16-Team National Tournament and performed brilliantly reaching the Quarter-Finals before eventually finishing in 6th Position.

This is the first time Papatoetoe AFC has had an U17s Girls Team and was an important step in developing women’s football at the club. We caught up with three important people to get their views on how the tournament went – Captain: Sarah Reid; Coach: Roland Lim; and Manager: Ave Stevens.

Captain: Sarah Reid

I think as captain, I can speak on behalf of the team to say that the tournament was hugely enjoyable and a great success. The professional atmosphere of the tournament made it a buzz for us as a team with everything from physio to media reporters on sight, and the football was of a high standard with all the games being tough and hard-fought.

For the girls who regularly compete in the Premier Women's League, the tournament was a great chance to take a leadership position on and off the field, as well as share their footballing knowledge with younger players. From the first match the team worked very hard as a unit, proving that we would be competitive in the tournament.

Over the 3 days we developed as a team and played football that we can be proud of. To be placed 6th overall was a credit to every one of the players who stepped out on the field. We are thankful for the hard work put in by coaches Roland Lim and Nicola Demaine and manager Ave Stevens. They worked tirelessly over the weekend and weeks leading up to the tournament to ensure we were properly prepared as a team.

Coach: Roland Lim

The girls played with a lot of heart and were able to compete with some of the top teams across the country. Every player that was part of the squad performed exceptionally well and everyone should be proud of how they represented Papatoetoe AFC.

Finishing as Plate Runners-Up was a wonderful achievement for the team. Coming second in the group stages was not an easy feat as we came up against strong clubs in , Upper Hutt City and East Coast Bays. To go on to reach the 14

Quarter-Finals shows how much young talent we have at the club and bodes well for the future.

Manager: Ave Stevens

Who knows what we were expecting from this weekend but our girls were proud to represent Papatoetoe AFC and they were ready to give it their all. They knew it would be a long haul but had the drive to see the tournament through to the end no matter what, or whom, we came up against.

We played "the beautiful game" the best way we knew, through passion, fun and feeling like we had accomplished something after the completion of every game. The on-going support, on and off the field, the continuous encouragement, whether we made a mistake, celebrated a goal or were able to string together three or four good passes in a row, reflected the outstanding team spirit and great sportsmanship.

If that was the one experience the girls took from this tournament, we would be happy with that. The girls’ understanding and forgiving nature saw half the team step up just that much more to accommodate the fact that we had a wide range of skills, as some had never played soccer before, but it also reflected the good natured and kind- hearted group of girls we had.

They battled through three days of unrelenting heat, continuous reminders about eating right, rehydrating, rest and to get enough sleep every night. The friendships and bonds built over this weekend will possibly see them back together again next year... that is something I am looking forward to see.

I think we certainly unsettled a few of the more established clubs and upset some forecasted scores. We are definitely a club to keep an eye on
