  • Fegyverleletek Királykő Várából
WEAPON FINDS FROM KING’S ROCK CASTLE∗ SÓFALVI ANDRÁS∗∗ Keywords: King’s Rock, border castle, arrowheads, Teutonic Order Abstract: King’s Rock castle known by the locals as ‘Oratea’, is situated under the Piatra Craiului (HU: Királykő) Mountains near the exit of the road that leads from the Bran Pass to Wallachia (Muntenia) in the outskirts of Podu Dâmboviței village (Argeș County). The fortification’s dimensions are very modest. It has an irregular rhomboidal layout with a semicircular tower on the eastern side and is defended by a ditch on the same side. The entrance of the castle was identified on the southern side; furthermore, two structures dug into the rock were discovered inside the castle. The castle, was mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 15th century as a royal fortification, and after several decades it came into the possession of Szekler Count (Comes Siculorum). According to the historical documents it was used until the 16th century, a supposition corroborated by the results of the archaeological investigations carried out between 1968 and 1969 as well as in 1971. The archaeological finds discovered there in secondary position and kept today in the collection of the Argeș County Museum in Pitești are composed of iron objects, with a significant number of weapons (i.e. 40 arrowheads), hinting at the sieges suffered by the castle during the 14–15th centuries. Based on the analysis of the topographical position of the castle we can put forward the hypothesis whereby King’s Rock castle is the only fortification outside the arch of the Carpathian Mountains known today which corresponds with the contemporary descriptions referring to the fortifications built by the Teutonic Order.

  • Typology 6: Military Structures
Typology 6: military structures Structures or environments for various purposes, strictly connected to wartime defence and offence. Although castles hold undeniable appeal, it was the collective notion of their ‘secret underground passages’ that first led to their exploration. Its very ‘genre’ is ascribable to the type of activity dealt with in speleology. For example, in relation to the position occupied by the ancient Praeneste, Strabone tells us that it not only had a natural defence but that it had underground walkways in all directions leading to the plains, which were both utilised as ‘secret passages’ and for the purposes of water supply. The point of the exploration is therefore to document other types of underground structures: wells, cisterns, warehouses, prisons, underground passages and connecting tunnels. Without of course calling off exploration and cognitive activity in those environments that only appear to be underground. Prior to the use of firearms, underground works inside the walls were not strictly necessary for defence purposes. Following their introduction, underground works immediately became a part of the fortification’s defence. In bastioned buildings, countermines and demolition installations generally constitute the most important defensive element. It should also be taken into account that over time and following partial destruction and burial or subsequent urban repairs, raised sections could end up below the level of adjacent ground. Defence works have been created almost everywhere, using different types of materials and sometimes using existing works. They can be used in the defence of houses, in territory control or in the defence of obligatory passages through valleys or along rivers.

  • Castles and Palaces on the Romantic Rhine
Castles and Palaces on the Romantic Rhine Legendary! On the romantic Rhine, there is a castle landscape which is unique in its density and variety. Between Bingen and Rüdesheim in the south and the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills) in the north, mediaeval knights’ castles, pretty Baroque palaces and impressive fortifi cations unite to make up a unique cultural landscape. The va- riety of the buildings from various epochs is impressive: in this respect, some castles served to levy customs and were therefore important income sources for those in power. Other buildings on the other hand were constructed as safeguards against neighbouring archbishoprics or electorates and yet others fulfi lled purely representative functions. How the scores of castles and palaces on the romantic Rhine appear today could also hardly be more varied. Some of them have remained preserved over the centuries through elaborate restoration and accommodate restaurants, hotels or museums. Others radiate the mystic charm of (almost) crumbled ruins and one can only divine how many wars and revolts they have seen come and go. The count- less palaces, castles and ruins can be ideally experienced on foot, by bike or by ship on the Rhine and in the secondary valleys of the Rhine valley. The historical showpieces and weathered monuments are often linked by hiking paths. And it’s all the same whether they’re in ruined or restored condition: adventurous legends, often based on true facts, are entwined around many of the historical walls... it’s simply legendary! www.romantischer-rhein.de Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower), Bingen Klopp Castle, Bingen The Mouse Tower in Binger Loch is located on an inacces- Klopp Castle, founded in the middle of the 13th century by sible island and is, next to Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, the only the Archbishop of Mainz, Siegfried III, in Bingen, secured the defence tower and watch tower in the middle of the Rhine.

One of the drawings shows a car- riage drawn by six horses driving around the fenced, French style garden so that it can enter the inner courtyard of the magnificent castle. Another image from Tthese drawings has also been vividly preserved: the market town Wadern being approached by a four-horse carriage belonging to a count. The scene conveys bustling activity: turning mills, the washing of fabrics, cattle roundups, farming activity. Two family crests decorated with the count’s coronet are located above both drawings: Öttingen-Sötern und Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. This snapshot from an older Dagstuhl Castle historical period and the Wadern residence shows the pulsating life of an emerging community which already possessed market rights and superior courts. Farming and trade guilds develop based on the Bavarian model; Wadern is on the rise to become the centre and administrative headquarters of the Hochwald region. Dagstuhl Castle is the cultural and aristocratic centre of the region of its time. The numerous festivities staged by the nobility are the talk of the town. A magnificent avenue near Lockweiler ushers opulently decorated carriages which are accompanied by footmen and outriders to the count’s castle.
