DAVIDSON WILDCATS

WILSON FIELD

Classic Box Score

Davidson 4, West Virginia 3

March 24, 1967 at Davidson, N.C.

Davidson’s first victory in newly-constructed Wildcat Park came in an exciting battle with West Virginia. A scoreless duel until the ninth, the Mountaineers took advantage of Buddy Durham’s lone mistake on the afternoon and belted a threerun homer. But when Ray Logan reached on an error to start the bottom of the ninth, the Wildcats found new life. Skip Waite belted a triple to score Logan for Davidson’s first run, and after Claude Owen drew a walk, West Virginia lifted Meadows — who had struck out 15 batters — for a reliever. Dick Lindsey promptly walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Durham helped his own cause by drawing a walk, forcing home Waite with the second run. That prompted another reliever to enter the game, who retired Frank Murphy on a short fly to left, too shallow to bring home Owen with the tying run. That left Wildcat shortstop Stew Brown, who ripped a single to right to score the winning runs.

Formerly known as Wildcat Park, Wilson
Field got an overhaul before the 2005 season, thanks to a generous donation from Janet Wilson, the widow of former Wildcats baseball player T. Henry Wilson ’51. Among the upgrades were a new press box, concession stand and bathrooms, improved seating, new playing surface and a new irrigation system.
The dedication took place on March 19,
2005, 38 years to the day after the first game on the site. While Davidson lost that initial saplings were planted and quickly sprang up into a lush, beautiful backdrop from foul pole to foul pole beyond the outfield fence.
During the 1980s, the ’Cats enjoyed tremendous success at Wildcat Park. Davidson’s record at home from 1985-88 was 67-28 (.705), including setting new standards for wins in three seasons. The 19 wins in 1988 is still the record.
Before the 1990 season, clubhouses were installed down each line, which served as the dressing rooms for the Wildcats for nearly a

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
