CHAPTER FIVE The Name of God The Golem Legend and the Demiurgic Role of the Alphabet Since Samaritanism must be viewed within the wider phenomenon of the Jewish religion, it will be pertinent to present material from Judaism proper which is corroborative to the thesis of the present work. In this Chapter, the idea about the agency of the Name of God in the creation process will be expounded; then, in the next Chapter, the various traditions about the Angel of the Lord which are relevant to this topic will be set forth. An apt introduction to the Jewish teaching about the Divine Name as the instrument of the creation is the so-called golem legend. It is not too well known that the greatest feat to which the Jewish magician aspired actually was that of duplicating God's making of man, the crown of the creation. In the Middle Ages, Jewish esotericism developed a great cycle of golem legends, according to which the able magician was believed to be successful in creating a o ?� (o?u)1. But the word as well as the concept is far older. Rabbinic sources call Adam agolem before he is given the soul: In the first hour [of the sixth day], his dust was gathered; in the second, it was kneaded into a golem; in the third, his limbs were shaped; in the fourth, a soul was irifused into him; in the fifth, he arose and stood on his feet[ ...]. (Sanh. 38b) In 1615, Zalman �evi of Aufenhausen published his reply (Jii.discher Theriak) to the animadversions of the apostate Samuel Friedrich Brenz (in his book Schlangenbalg) against the Jews. -

These three are one. How can the three Names be one? Only through the perception of faith; in the vision of the Holy Spirit, in the beholding of the hidden eye alone...So it is with the mystery of the threefold Divine manifestations designated by Adonai Eloheinu Adonai—three modes which yet form one unity. 1 A Christian quote? Hardly. The above is taken from the Zohar, an ancient book of Jewish mysticism. The Zohar is somewhat esoteric and most contemporary Jews don't study it, but there are other Jewish books that refer to God's plurality as well. Why then won't Jews discuss these things? Could it be that to do so might lead a person to consider Y'shua (Jesus) as who and what he claimed to be? 2 Rabbis denounce the idea that God would come to us in human flesh as utterly pagan and contrary to what Judaism teaches. What can we actually say that Judaism teaches? Some people see Judaism as a monolith of religion, with all its teachings resting upon the narrow foundation of the Sh'ma. The Sh'ma certainly is a point of unity that all Jews must affirm. -

Shavuot, also referred to as Zman Matan Torahteinu, commemorates the giving of the Torah and each year we have the opportunity to ‘reaccept’ it into our lives. Part of having a relationship with the Torah is recognizing that we all relate to it in a personal way and connect to it as individuals. This is best expressed in the notion that we each have an individual ‘Chelek’, a portion, in Torah. Every Shabbat morning in our Tefillot we ask Hashem “Ve’tein Chelkeinu BeToratecha”, that God provides us with our own portion in Torah. In all areas of life, we sometimes find ourselves making comparisons to others when measuring our capabilities and achievements. This has an especially negative impact with regards to our spirituality, Torah learning and Avodat Hashem. Rather than focusing on those around us, we each need to discover and work on our own Chelek in Torah, taking in to account our background, our strengths, and our situation. We ask Hashem “Ve’tein Chelkeinu BeToratecha” for help in achieving our personal connection. HaRav Avigdor Neventzal, the Rav of the Old City of Jerusalem, explains this concept with an insightful analogy. When the army sends out draft notices, each future soldier will receive a copy of the same piece of paper, telling them to come to the headquarters and register for the army. However, each soldier will ultimately be given their own job. Some will serve in combat; others will sit behind a desk and others will work on base. Even if two soldiers are assigned to the same unit, they will each be given slightly different roles. -

Heschel’s Torah Min Ha-Shamayyim BeAspaqlaria Shel Ha-Doroth (TMS) never received the comprehensive scholarly attention that it deserves. Its philosophical and theological emphasis was out of place in the oeuvre in which it was published. Decades later it resurged in popularity, but by and large not amongst those with the textual and philological grounding in rabbinics to assess it meaningfully. TMS stands as a compelling analysis of early-rabbinic theological trends and the historical ramifications therein. -
