Heywood Hardy was a painter and etcher of animals, portraits, genre and sporting subjects. He was born in Chichester, on 25th November, 1842, son of the artist James Hardy, Sr. (1801- 1879) and younger brother of James Hardy, Jr. (1832-1889).

After a short time with the 7th Somerset Volunteers, Hardy borrowed some money from his brother and travelled to . In 1864 he entered the Beaux Arts to study under the battle artist, Pielse.

He returned to England in 1868 and found his work was in great demand. He was often invited to country estates to paint portraits, sporting pictures and animal studies. Hardy continued to enjoy commissions for portraits, animal studies and hunting scenes, but he decided to concentrate on painting genre subjects.

From about 1870 his career flourished and he was elected a member of a number of societies including The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited 46 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1919 whilst also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institute.

Stepping Out Signed Oil on Canvas 24 x 18 ins / 61 x 45.7 cms 2 Sidney Richard Percy 1821 - 1886

Sidney Richard Percy Williams was the fifth son of the artist Edward Williams. He was born in London and began his career when his elder brothers were already established artists. Percy’s very early work was signed 'Sidney Williams' but he was only 20 when he adopted the use of ‘Percy’ as the name under which his paintings were to achieve a greater popularity than those of any other member of the Williams family.

When Percy married in 1863, he and his new family settled in . Their Regency home, Hill House was ideally placed for the study of the English wooded landscape, as it looked across the Misbourne Valley to the beech woods and beyond. Percy reached the peak of his popularity as an artist during the years he spent at Hill House and was able to support the extravagant tastes of his wife - maintaining a carriage and employing an army of servants.

As well as the Lake District Percy was very fond of the Welsh countryside which he painted often and he also produced a number of Scottish landscapes. His paintings have a marked sense of design and his clarity and detail reflect his great interest in photography. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.

On the Mawddach Marshes, North Wales Signed and Dated 1877 Oil on Canvas 24 x 38 ins / 61 x 96.5 cms Exhibited : RA 1877 3 Fredrik Marinus Kruseman 1816 - 1882

Born in Haarlem in 1816, Kruseman showed an early talent for drawing. Between 1832 and 1833 he attended the City Drawing School and he studied painting with Roosenboom. He would have come into contact with the great artist Schelfhout during this period, as he was a regular visitor to Roosenboom’s studio. In 1833 Kruseman made his debut at the Exhibition of Living Masters in The Hague.

Kruseman moved to Kleve in 1836 and it was here, under the informal tutelage of B.C. Koekkoek, that he was now inspired to paint realistic landscapes and to give expression to the feeling that the landscape evoked in him. He learned how to paint trees and how to indicate skate tracks in the snow by applying white paint and then scratching it off whilst wet with the sharp end of a brush. In 1841 the artist moved to Brussels where he was to remain for most of his life. The salons and coffee houses there were natural meeting grounds for artists and amongst others Kruseman met Verboeckhoven here with whom he collaborated often.

During the fifties and sixties Kruseman gave ruins and castles greater prominence in his work, more for Romantic effect than for accurate topography. Winter landscapes made up about two thirds of his work and during the later fifties his art came to full fruition. He introduced his first coral-like tree branches and the depth of his panoramic landscapes became more marked. His cool grey-blue tones gave way to a much warmer palette. This particular example is among the finest of the oeuvre. Kruseman worked well into the late seventies and eventually died in Saint-Gillis near Brussels on 25th May, 1882.

Dutch Winter Landscape with Skaters Signed and Dated 1857 Oil on Canvas 193/4 x 271/2 ins / 52 x 69.8 cms 4 Charles Joseph Frédéric Soulacroix 1825 - 1889

Soulacroix was born in Montpellier in France on 6th July, 1825. He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in September, 1845, studying with the sculptors A.A. Dumont (1801-1884) and E.J. Ramey (1796-1852) and the German painter P. Cornelius (1783-1867). The artist won awards for both sculpture and painting and he made his debut at the Salon in 1849.

Soulacroix painted a number of history paintings and he also decorated the dome and six side chapels in Notre Dame Cathedral between 1863 and 1865 at the request of Monseigneur Haffreingue, the Bishop of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

In July, 1852 Soulacroix married Giacinta Diofebo in Rome. He worked there after his marriage and also in Parma, Pisa, Livorno and Florence. During his time in Italy he perfected his best known subject matter, scenes depicting 18th century costumed figures. Soulacroix excelled in painting figures enjoying the fashionable salons of Paris and Florence. He demonstrated his technical skills by painting elegant furniture and the fine silk and satin fabrics of dresses and wall coverings.

This particular painting depicts three sumptuously dressed women enjoying afternoon tea, a ritual central to the vibrant salon culture of the period. The salons of Paris allowed fashionable women to gather and refine their taste and knowledge through conversation. The elaborate satin gowns, fine china adorned with Japanese motifs, silk covered walls and Louis XV ormolu furniture are all marks of the very best taste they sought to refine. Soulacroix’s paintings were very popular among the society he depicted and brought him considerable success during his lifetime. He continues to be regarded as the master of his genre today. The artist died on 9th May, 1889 in Florence.

The Three Graces Signed Oil on Canvas 14 x 20 ins / 35.5 x 58 cms 6 Antonietta Brandeis Born 1849

Antonietta Brandeis was born in Miskowitz, Austria in 1849. She studied under Karel Javurek in Prague before moving to Venice to become a pupil at the Academy.

The development of international tourism in the 19th century meant that many more people were travelling to the beauty spots of Europe. Venice was a very popular destination for these travellers and the demand for paintings of Venice grew. This demand resulted in an influx of artists to Venice all of whom produced topographical views of the city and its environs. The presence of painters from Austria, such as Eugene de Blaas and F.R. Unterberger is not surprising in view of the fact that Venice was under Austrian rule for part of the century. Brandeis was another such artist.

Her paintings were enormously popular and provided visitors with exquisite mementos of their time in the city. She painted the famous landmarks in intricate detail and captured the light and vitality which are the essence of Venice. Brandeis also went to Rome and Florence and painted there although her depictions of Venice are the most prized.

The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice Signed Oil on Board 47/8 x 83/8 ins / 12.5 x 21.3 cms 8 Adelsteen Normann 1848 - 1918

Adelsteen Normann was born on 1st May, 1848 at Bodo, Norway. He started his working life in business, but gave this up before he was twenty and went to Düsseldorf to study painting. Normann loved his native Norway, but knew he would receive a better artistic training in Germany. He worked in Düsseldorf from 1869 to 1873 with the well known charismatic Russian professor Eugen Ducker, who encouraged him in his imaginative treatment of landscape.

Normann was almost exclusively a landscape painter. Under the influence of Ducker it was in Düsseldorf that Normann produced his most inspired Norwegian scenes. It was the fjords that fascinated Normann most, and he was preoccupied with trying to recreate their atmosphere. He loved Norwegian rural life and the harmony this seemed to have with the surrounding landscape. Paintings of fishermen, peasants and small villages set against the snow are typical of this. He was also very interested in the effect of the sun and moon on the snow, the feel of the snow at night and its different appearance and feeling during the various seasons.

Normann’s work was very much appreciated during his lifetime. He exhibited in Berlin, Vienna, London, Düsseldorf and Munich. He also exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1882, where he received an honourable mention in 1884 and the bronze medal in 1889.

A Norwegian Fijord Signed Oil on Canvas 25 x 38 ins / 63.5 x 96.5 cms 9 Edouard Léon Cortès 1882 - 1969

Cortès was born on 6th August 1882 into a family of artists and artisans. His family originated from Seville but came to France in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle and never returned to Spain. They settled in Lagny which is about 20 miles east of Paris as there had been an artistic community there for many years. Cortès lived there for most of his life, leaving school at the age of 13 to enter his father’s studio where he learnt to paint.

In 1899 Cortès was admitted to the Salon and his work was praised by the international press. Although Cortès painted some landscapes and other genres his main interest was that of portraying the Paris of the Belle Epoque. This period lasted between 1880 and 1914 and saw the glorious rise of art, music, theatre, literature and industry. The Parisians were able to enjoy the fruits of the rebuilding of the city undertaken by Napoleon III and Haussmann. In 1888 the ‘Figaro Illustré’ devoted a special issue to this ‘spectacle de la rue’ calling the boulevards the ‘true theatre’ of Paris. Cortès painted the boulevards and the famous monuments of Paris and delighted in capturing them with many different lighting effects, weathers and viewpoints.

A London landscape painter, James Edwin Meadows was the son of well-known artist, James Meadows, Sr. and came from a family with a strong artistic tradition.

Despite being based in London, James Edwin Meadows travelled extensively throughout Great Britain seeking inspiration for his landscapes, particularly concentrating on the Southern coastline. He frequently painted views in Essex, Kent, Sussex, and the Isle of Wight.

James Edwin Meadows exhibited at the major London Galleries including the Royal Academy (1854-72), the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists.

A Summer’s Day Signed and Dated 1880 Oil on Canvas 30 x 48 ins / 76.2 x 122 cms 11 Johannes Hendrik Eversen 1906 - 1995

J.H. Eversen was born in The Hague on 30th May, 1906. He was a descendant of the well- known 19th century artist, Adrianus Eversen, who painted town scenes.

Eversen began his career as a portrait painter, under the direction of the artist W. Lampe, working mostly in watercolours. He changed direction after attending the Heatherley School of Art in London during the 1930s. There he began to explore the still-life subjects of the 17th century Dutch old masters such as Claesz and de Heem. Eversen carefully studied their subject matter and began to incorporate oysters, wine flutes, cheese and fruit into his own work, often using pewterware and wine bottles to enhance his composition. He enjoyed painting different textures such as wood, porcelain and leather and his talent can be fully appreciated in subjects which depict musical instruments or books. Eversen developed to perfection the use of a single bright light source in his work. This gives the paintings a dramatic quality and creates a feeling of realism. His paintings reflect a timeless serenity and are always carefully balanced in colour, shape and texture.

The artist died in Arnhem on 30th December, 1995.

Still Life with Roemer, Pewter and Fruit Signed and Dated 1959 Oil on Canvas 20 x 28 ins / 50.8 x 71.1 cms 12 John Frederick Herring Jr 1815 - 1907

John Frederick Herring, Jr. came from a family of sporting and animal artists, which included his father, who was a very famous painter of sporting and animal subjects, his two brothers, Benjamin and Charles, and his uncle, Benjamin, Sr. His mother (a member of the Society of Lady Artists) was also a competent painter and exhibited genre scenes at the Royal Academy from 1852 to 1866.

John was the first of three sons to help his successful father. He worked in both oil and watercolour, but his oils are of greater interest and they have in the past often been confused with those of his father. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy between 1863 and 1873 and also showed at the British Institute and the Suffolk Street Galleries. Herring married the artist Kate Rolfe and spent the latter part of his life at Fulbourn near Cambridge

Good Companions Signed Oil on Canvas 30 x 50 ins / 76.2 x 127 cms 13 Charles Haigh-Wood 1856 - 1927

Charles Haigh-Wood was born in 1856 in a home above a workshop in Bury in the north of England. His father, Charles Wood, was a master craftsman who made picture frames. By the 1870s when Charles Sr.'s business was prospering, he diversified into picture-dealing, and the family moved into a substantial new home.

While studying at the Royal Academy Schools, Haigh-Wood captured a great deal of attention, and by 21 he was exhibiting at the Academy proper and was subsequently elected a member. Following his election, he travelled and studied Renaissance masters in Italy, before returning to settle in England.

His talent at painting portraits brought him many commissions but Haigh-Wood was best known for painting drawing room "conversation pieces", or story-telling scenes of polite society, which made him a popular genre painter in the late 19th century. His work was very sought after during his lifetime and a number of his paintings were purchased by greeting- card manufacturers for reproduction, which ensured both his fame and financial security.

Manchester City Art Gallery, the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and Bury Art Museum all have examples of work by Haigh-Wood.

The Picture Book Signed and Dated ‘93 Oil on Canvas 12 x 15 ins / 30.5 x 38.1 cms 14 Louis Bosworth Hurt 1856 - 1929

Born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, Hurt became famous for his paintings of the Scottish Highlands and his portrayal of Highland cattle. Some of Hurt’s early training was as the pupil of another well-known Derbyshire artist, George Turner. Much of his work was done at his home in Ivonbrook, where he kept his own herd of Highland cattle, although he made frequent visits to Scotland. He also painted small landscapes during Snowdonian autumn holidays, when he had a cottage at Bettws. Occasionally he painted views in the Southern Counties, especially at Burnham Beeches, and a list of his sales documented in Benezit suggests that he also visited France.

The Highlands Signed and Dated 1901 Oil on Canvas 24 x 40 ins / 61 x 101.6 cms 15 Henry Redmore 1820-1887

The Humberside artist Henry Redmore is recognised as one of Britain's greatest marine painters. His earliest works show the influence of the Scottish marine painter, William Anderson (1757-1837) who resided in Hull for some time. John Ward (1798-1849), another great marine painter from Hull, may well have taught Redmore.

Many of Redmore's works depict shipping in the Humber estuary, off the coast and in the harbours of Whitby and Scarborough. He also visited the South West Coast of England and pictures are recorded by him of Torbay and several other ports on the and Cornish coast. He travelled to Holland and Germany, with Hull playing an important role in trade between Britain and the continent during the 19th century. The influence of the great Dutch 17th Century masters - Willem Van de Velde, Ludolf Bakhuysen and Jan Van Goyen - can be clearly seen in many of Henry Redmore's paintings.

The serenity, stillness, sense of colour and above all, the high standard of draughtsmanship account for the quality of his paintings, which are highly prized by collectors today. The attention Redmore paid to detail shows that he was a careful observer of shipping activity between the Humber and the continent, and this helps to create the unique atmosphere achieved in his work.

Redmore exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull has examples of his work.

Haybarges, Morning Light Signed & Dated 1874 Oil on Canvas 18 x 30 ins / 45.7 x 76.2 cms 16 Charles Towne 1763 - 1840

Charles Towne was born in Wigan in 1763. He was trained as a coach painter and by the age of 17 was set up in the town as a japanner and decorative painter. Towne also studied landscape painting receiving instruction from John Rathbone, the 'Manchester Richard Wilson'. In 1787, Towne exhibited his first landscape at the recently founded Liverpool Society for Promoting Painting and Design. Towne also made copies of George Stubbs' two paintings exhibited there, 'Harvesters' and 'Reapers'. By the 1790s, he was becoming an established animal painter with a style based on his study of Stubbs.

Towne was also very interested in the work of the Dutch seventeenth century landscape painters. Artist W.S. Sparrow wrote that "his landscapes are minutely detailed and have a Dutch mannerism; animals and figures are put in with diligent and affectionate care". His landscapes were either romanticised versions of real topography or purely imaginary visions. The lyricism of Towne's setting heightened the solid reality and presence of his animals.

On his first visit to London in 1796, Towne received favourable mention from Joseph Farington, who noted that the artist had 'six months work bespoke'. Towne began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1799. Although he spent the first decade of the new century in London, where he became friends with and de Loutherbourg, Towne achieved most in Liverpool, where he settled in 1811. He was elected Vice-President of the new Liverpool Academy of Artists in 1812 and again the following year, and continued exhibiting there and in Manchester until 1825.

Although Towne is best-known for his paintings of horses, especially hunters, he studied every aspect of rural life and sport. He also won commissions to paint cattle, favourite dogs, hunting and shooting scenes, and occasional pieces in the Grand Manner with such titles as 'Tiger growling over her prey'. His works can be found in the Walker Gallery, Liverpool.

A Chestnut Hunter with his Groom in a Landscape Signed and Dated 1819 Oil on Canvas 193/4 x 251/4 ins / 50.2 x 64.1 cms Provenance: Arthur Ackerman & Son 17 Edward George Handel Lucas 1861 - 1936

Edward Handel Lucas was a painter of still-life, landscape and figure subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and Grosvenor Gallery and is best known for his meticulous still life subjects with moralistic titles. His attention to detail was such that his paintings rarely took less than six months to complete and very often longer. Such is the scarcity of his work that his life story has remained totally forgotten until recently when his diaries of newspaper cuttings were discovered.

Named after his father's favourite composer, Handel Lucas was hailed a child genius when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1879 at the age of seventeen. From then on his work appeared regularly at the annual Academy exhibitions and always drew notices praising his consistent quality. “Mr. Handel Lucas... possesses in a more marked degree than any still life painter I have met with, that genius which a great writer has informed us is an infinite capacity for taking pains.”

By 1910, with the tide of fashion turning in favour of Impressionism, Handel Lucas found his work became increasingly difficult to sell. Three years later, it was recorded that he was working on a picture in an attempt to pay the rent bill of £60. The landlady would not wait for its completion and the families were evicted. His work began to reappear at London auctions in 1972, as did a demand for his highly detailed still life paintings. Geraldine Norman wrote an article about Handel Lucas called 'Blowing The Dust Off A Forgotten Pre- Impressionist' in The Times in 1972.

School Board Assistants Signed and Dated 1885-6 Oil on Panel 6 x 8 ins / 15.3 x 20.3 cms 18 Walter Hunt 1861 - 1941

Walter Hunt was born in 1861 into a highly artistic family. His father Charles Hunt was a painter of genre scenes, and his brother Edgar Hunt is well known for his portraits of chickens, goats and rabbits. Walter Hunt is best known for his paintings of farmyard scenes, particularly of calves, horses and dogs. His paintings achieve superb colour and are meticulously detailed.

Walter Hunt lived at Wandsworth in London, and exhibited works at the Royal Academy from 1881. In 1885 a painting entitled 'Dog in the Manger' was bought by The Chantrey Bequest.

Paintings by Walter Hunt can be seen at The Tate Gallery and also in the Sunderland Museum.

Rough and Tumble Signed and Dated 1903 Oil on Canvas 20 x 30 ins / 50.8 x 76.2 cms 19 Joseph Clarke 1834 - 1926

Joseph Clarke was born near Dorchester, Dorset. He studied painting in London under J. M. Leigh (1808-1860), who was himself the only pupil of William Etty, RA (1787-1849), the celebrated painter of classical and historical subjects. Clarke specialised in depicting domestic genre subjects of a tender nature which generally featured children and he also painted a small number of biblical subjects. In 1857 at the age of twenty three he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy and he continued to exhibit there for all but two of the subsequent forty seven years.

Many Victorian painters sought to demonstrate their social conscience through emphasising in their paintings the importance of family life and Joseph Clarke was no exception. Whilst avoiding the overly sentimental style of some of his contemporaries, he frequently chose subjects which sought to remind people of their good fortune in having a caring family at a time when many children grew up as orphans in workhouses. Even in this painting, which depicts such a happy family gathered together to celebrate Christmas, Clarke’s choice of title refers to the ‘Christmas Dole’ - literally the tradition which may stretch as far back as the Middle Ages of ‘the dole of the Christmas box’, when priests opened the church’s alms boxes to distribute their contents to the poor.

Joseph Clarke enjoyed considerable success with his paintings, maintaining both a London house and a home in the country for much of his life. In 1876 he was awarded a medal in Philadelphia for his paintings ‘The Sick Child’ and ‘The Nest’. The Chantrey Bequest purchased two of his paintings, ‘Early Promise’ in 1877 and ‘A Mother’s Darling’ in 1885.

A Christmas Dole Signed Oil on Canvas 35 x 47 ins / 88.9 x 119.3 cms Exhibited: R A 1889 no. 444 20 Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg 1838 - 1904

Born in Draveil, Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg was the son of Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg. Initially he trained and worked with his father but after a while he became a sailor and travelled the world. On his return to France in 1883, he began his formal artistic training and studied under Durand-Brager and d’Isabey.

Kuwasseg specialised in painting landscapes of the Breton and Normandy coast, seascapes of the North Sea and scenes in Italy. He collaborated with the artist Poilpot on a series of different landscapes. Kuwasseg exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français from early on in his career and won a 3rd class medal in 1892 and he eventually became a professor of art.

Kuwasseg’s delicate yet confident style was highly valued during his lifetime and he was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the finest artists of this genre. His paintings can be found in the museums of Montreal, Pontoise, Rouen, Perigueux, Digne and La Rochelle.

Sunlit Port, Italy Signed and Dated 1868 Canvas 22 x 391/4 ins / 55.8 x 99.7 cms 21 Delphin Enjolras 1857 - 1945

Delphin Enjolras was born in 1857 at Courcouron in the Ardèche. He had a formal artistic training studying under the celebrated teacher Gérome at the Beaux-Arts, and Dagnan- Bouveret.

He painted some fine landscapes, in particular those hanging in the Musée du Puy, and the Musée Calvet d'Avignon. However the majority of Enjolras' oil paintings and pastels depict young ladies illuminated by lamplight. His subjects are often engaged in simple domestic pursuits such as reading, sewing or flower arranging, although at times he sought a more intimate portrayal.

Enjolras exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1901, and at the Paris Salon from 1890. His work is represented in the Musée du Puy and Musée d’Avignon.

La Belle Fleur Signed Pastel on Canvas 201/2 x 281/2 ins / 52.1 x 72.4 cms 22 Rafael Senet y Perez 1856 - 1926

Rafael Senet y Perez was born in Seville on 7th October, 1856. He studied under Joaquin Dominguez Becquer and Eduardo Cano de la Preda at the college of fine arts in Seville and then under J. Villegas y Cordero. Senet then moved to Madrid where he continued his formal education by studying the old masters in the Prado. In 1881 he went to Rome and then travelled extensively in Italy, visiting Florence, Venice and Naples before returning to Seville at the beginning of the 1890s. He settled there and aligned himself with a group of landscape artists which had formed around the painter Sanchez Perrier.

The development of international tourism in the 19th century meant that a new type of traveller visited the beauty spots of Europe. High on the list of desirable destinations was Venice and paintings depicting Venice were increasingly popular as reminders of such visits for the new tourist. As well as native Italian artists who mainly painted Venice, such as Rubens Santoro (1859-1942), there were also many foreign artists who, like Senet, had a fascination for the city. One of the most famous of these was the Peruvian artist Federico del Campo who had also studied in Madrid like Senet before travelling to Italy.

Senet was involved in various exhibitions in Seville, Cadiz, Madrid and elsewhere and was awarded several prestigious medals. His paintings of Venice were very highly regarded during his lifetime and the prominent Tooth Gallery in London had exclusive sales rights for his work. The artist was a great draughtsman and colourist and his work captures not only the exquisite architecture of the city but also its unique atmosphere and beauty.

He stayed there for several years living within the artistic community. Andersen-Lundby moved to Munich in 1876 where he exhibited his works virtually every year. For the most part the artist painted winter landscapes often depicting late afternoon sunshine or dusk. His works are very atmospheric and his technique became very impressionistic towards the latter part of his life.

Museums in Copenhagen, Munich and Trieste hold examples of his work.

As Evening Falls Signed Oil on Canvas 30 x 45 ins / 76.2 x 114.3 cms 25 Antoine Blanchard 1910 - 1988

Antoine Blanchard was born in a village near Blois on the banks of the River Loire in 1910. His father had an important joinery business and was well known in the area. Perhaps it was through watching his father carving wood and producing fine craftsmanship that the artistic spirit was kindled in the young Blanchard. Soon his parents were actively encouraging Antoine by sending him to Blois for drawing lessons. They realised that this would only give him the rudiments and to achieve a successful artistic career he would need expert guidance. For this reason he was sent to Rennes to attend classes at the School of Beaux Arts.

He studied for three years and developed a remarkable drawing skill, which was to prove invaluable in later life. Sadly, Antoine Blanchard's artistic hopes were put aside when he had to take over the family joinery business left to him by his father. He painted occasionally for pleasure, but had to refuse many important commissions from art dealers as business pressures were so great. He eventually retired from business and moved to Paris, where he lived until his death. Antoine Blanchard took no interest in the aspects of modern life and always depicted the elegance of life in Paris in the early 1900s.

Charles Garabed Atamian was an Armenian painter and illustrator of landscape and marine subjects. The majority of his works are oil paintings and he often depicted beach scenes, especially children playing in the sand.

Atamian was born in Constantinople, but predominantly worked and exhibited in Paris. He exhibited at La Nationale from 1913-42, at the Independent Gallery from 1938-45, and he was made an Associate of La Nationale in 1927.

Atamian’s work has always been very popular and in high demand. He captures not only the luminosity of wet, sun-drenched sand, but also the charm of children playing in the 1920s and 1930s.

Sir William Russell Flint was born on 4th April 1880 in Edinburgh. He was the eldest son of Francis Wighton Flint, the Scottish artist, under whom he studied painting and drawing. At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a firm of lithographers, where he remained for 6 years. He was also taking evening classes at the Royal Institution School of Art.

In 1900, he came to London and was first employed to do medical drawings, later being appointed to work on the ‘Illustrated London News’ from 1903-1907. During this time he studied at Heatherley’s School in the evenings. He became interested in book illustration, his first works being the illustrations to Rider Haggard’s ‘King Solomon’s Mines’. He took up etching, which he studied at the School of Art in 1914.

As early as 1905 he was exhibiting watercolours at the Salon de la Societe Nationale in Paris and in 1906, exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy, where he exhibited regularly until his death. He was made an Associate in 1924 after hanging only three oils, and a full member in 1933. He was also made a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1917 and was president of the society from 1936 to 1956. He spent much time abroad painting on the continent especially in Spain, France and Italy. Works in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; the Liverpool and Cardiff Galleries and several other Scottish and provincial galleries represent him. He was knighted in 1947 and died in London in 1969.

Pierre de Clausade was born in Paris on the 15th April, 1910. Although he did not begin to paint for exhibition until he was 31, the desire to express himself through painting had occurred to him many years before. Clausade felt that, in addition to a thorough knowledge of his craft, he must experiment - following the example of his contemporaries Braque, Matisse and Picasso. After many years of trial and error he felt sufficiently confident to hold his first exhibition in Paris in 1943. The exhibition was a phenomenal success and as a result further shows were held during the following years in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York and Jordan.

Pierre de Clausade exhibited regularly at the Société des Beaux Arts and became a member of the Salon d’Hiver. Then his fame spread abroad and his paintings entered many distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and Minneapolis Museums of Fine Art. Despite this success Clausade continued to develop his technique, striving for perfection and the satisfaction of his analytical nature.

Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the Paris Salon in January 1953.

Colin Burns is a renowned painter of landscape, sporting art and natural history subjects. Born in Norfolk, many of Colin’s paintings depict views of East Anglia, the beauty of which has inspired so many fine artists from the 18th century to the present day. However, he is equally adept at capturing the highlands of Scotland and many other beautiful unspoilt areas of England and Europe. This year Colin worked on a series of London views in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games. He has held seven one-man exhibitions in London and his work is represented in many important private collections, both in Europe and America.

James Brereton was born in 1954. He studied at the Joseph Wright Art School in Derby. By 1979 James was selling enough of his paintings to give up his job and become a professional artist. His interest in ships and the sea was growing and this took precedence over the wide variety of other subjects he had painted in the past. These marine works were strongly influenced by the great marine painters Thomas Somerscales and Montague Dawson. James sailed before the mast on the Sir Winston Churchill schooner belonging to the Sail Training Association in the 1990s. This was an exhilarating experience which provided him with much inspiration.

Currently, nearly all James’ works are of marine subjects and they are often painted on a large scale in oil as he believes ‘the vast ocean is often best captured on a big canvas’. His largest commission to date has been a pair of canvases measuring 65 x 87 inches, each of Omani Dhows, which now hang in a fine palace. James has exhibited widely in England, including showing at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London.
