ST PAUL’S POST St Paul’s Province Weekly Newsletter: 142 23 September 2019 Our Maire Murphy 23 September birthday Moya O’Cleary 23 September girls this week are: Mary Patrick Corrigan 26 September Sister Majella invited us to a beautiful service in our Chapel on Thursday 19th September 2019. It was in response to Our Holy Father, Pope Francis: Feast of Creation. Each of us had a booklet made especially for the occasion. The sisters next door at 78 were also invited. The booklet had readings from 'Laudato Si', Hymns, Litany of Repentance and Prayer of Petition. As we entered the chapel we were greeted by a wonderful Feast of Creation. 'All things bright and beautiful', arranged among colourful silky cloths, were rabbits, birds butterflies, fish, flowers of all colours, vegetables, fruit, and candles to represent the four seasons. The candles were lit at different parts of the service. Sidney Richard Percy - “Across the Common” - Ref 2307 A crisply painted summer scene depicting two children watching some sheep grazing at the side of a path winding its way across the common, painted by renowned 19th century artist Sidney Richard Percy. Born in London, 5th son of Edward Williams of the famous William’s family of painters, Sidney began his career when his elder brothers were already well established. His very early work was signed Sidney Williams but at 20 adopted the surname Percy, under which his paintings of Home Counties, Devon, Yorkshire, the Lake District, Skye and North Wales, were to achieve a greater popularity than those of any other member of the Williams family. When Sidney married in 1863, he and his new family settled in Buckinghamshire. Their Regency home, Hill House was ideally placed for the study of the English wooded landscape, as it looked across the Misbourne Valley to the beech woods and beyond. Percy reached the peak of his popularity as an artist during the years he spent there and was able to support the extravagant tastes of his wife Percy’s palette was bright and realistic, his style meticulous and highly detailed, with a natural air and look to all his work. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy (1842-1886), and the British Institute. His works are also found in museums and galleries such as the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; The Museum of Fine Arts, Canada; and museums and city art galleries in Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Sunderland, Salford and York. -

James Duffield Harding (London 1798 - London 1863) Bologna watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour and gum arabic 19.6 x 29.4 cm (7¾ x 11½ in) In this delightful watercolour James Duffield Harding’s has combined the timeless classicism of the city with such a charming theatrical portrayal of human interaction. The result is a truly radiant expression of the Emilia-Romagnan capital. In the foreground, Harding has depicted a group of figures in close interaction with one another. Five ladies, two gentlemen and one dog form a figural arch, the shape of which is loosely guided by the hats and headdress of the individuals. The rich overlap of the ladies’ skirts renders the individual forms more or less indistinguishable, creating a lively visual flow which seems to illustrate the conversation and further unify the group. As the dog looks eagerly beyond the group, the viewer is alerted to the presence of a mother and child dressed in rags at the periphery of the arch, tentatively approaching their well-dressed counterparts. As the eye is drawn along from this figural interplay to the classical architecture which frames the cityscape, Harding surprises the viewer with the figure of another lady who is leaning over the balustrade contemplating the view below. She is faceless; invisible but for her colourful dress and hat. The faceless form of this lady is cleverly mirrored by her classical companions who stand atop the architecture, their backs to the city; similarly surveying the view below which is inaccessible to the viewer. The present work was engraved by Edward Finden and published in Finden’s Illustrations of the Life and Works of Lord Byron. -

Noted events in his life were: • He worked as a Colour maker. Thomas married Susannah Cowley1 on 22 Apr 1710 in FMH Southwark. Susannah was born in 1683 and died in 1743 at age 60. They had three children: Thomas, Thomas, and Rachel. 3-Thomas Reynolds1 was born in 1712 and died in 1713 at age 1. 3-Thomas Reynolds1,2,3 was born on 22 May 1714 in Southwark, London and died on 22 Mar 1771 in Westminster, London at age 56. Noted events in his life were: • He worked as a Linen Draper. • He worked as a Clothworker in London. Thomas married Mary Foster,1,2 daughter of William Foster and Sarah, on 16 Oct 1733 in Southwark, London. Mary was born on 20 Oct 1712 in Southwark, London and died on 23 Jul 1741 in London at age 28.
