Does Early Colonial Art Provide an Accurate Guide to the Nature and Structure of the Pre-European Forests and Woodlands of South

Does early Colonial Art provide an accurate guide to the nature and structure of the pre-European forests and woodlands of South-Eastern Australia? A study focusing on Victoria and Tasmania By Michael Francis Ryan B For Sei, University of Melbourne Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of: Master of Forestry Australian National University November 2009 Candidate’s Declaration I declare that this is the original work of Michael Francis Ryan of 84 Somerville Rd Yarraville, Victoria submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Forestry at the Australian National University. 2 Acknowledgements I am very grateful for the assistance and patience especially of Professor Peter Kanowski of the Australian National University for overseeing this work and providing guidance and advice on structure, content and editing. I would also like to acknowledge Professor Tim Bonyhady also of the Australian National University, whose expertise in the artwork field provided much inspiration and thoughtful analysis understanding early artwork. Bill Gammage, also from the ANU, provided excellent critical analysis using his extensive knowledge of the artists of the period to suggest valuable improvements. Ron Hateley from the University of Melbourne has an incredible knowledge of the early history of Victoria and of the ecology of Australia’s forests and woodlands. Ron continued to be a great sounding board for ideas and freely shared his own thoughts on early artwork in Western Victoria and the nature of the pre-European forests and I thank him for his assistance. Pat Groenhout, formally from VicForests, provided detailed comments and proof reading of manuscripts and this has considerably improved the readability and structure.

James Duffield Harding (London 1798 - London 1863) Bologna watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour and gum arabic 19.6 x 29.4 cm (7¾ x 11½ in) In this delightful watercolour James Duffield Harding’s has combined the timeless classicism of the city with such a charming theatrical portrayal of human interaction. The result is a truly radiant expression of the Emilia-Romagnan capital. In the foreground, Harding has depicted a group of figures in close interaction with one another. Five ladies, two gentlemen and one dog form a figural arch, the shape of which is loosely guided by the hats and headdress of the individuals. The rich overlap of the ladies’ skirts renders the individual forms more or less indistinguishable, creating a lively visual flow which seems to illustrate the conversation and further unify the group. As the dog looks eagerly beyond the group, the viewer is alerted to the presence of a mother and child dressed in rags at the periphery of the arch, tentatively approaching their well-dressed counterparts. As the eye is drawn along from this figural interplay to the classical architecture which frames the cityscape, Harding surprises the viewer with the figure of another lady who is leaning over the balustrade contemplating the view below. She is faceless; invisible but for her colourful dress and hat. The faceless form of this lady is cleverly mirrored by her classical companions who stand atop the architecture, their backs to the city; similarly surveying the view below which is inaccessible to the viewer. The present work was engraved by Edward Finden and published in Finden’s Illustrations of the Life and Works of Lord Byron.

(Museums and Archives, a Museums and Galleries Commission Report, researched by Clare Conybeare and Anita Travers.) Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery was founded in 1897 and has been a local authority institution since its foundation. The museum service is responsible for four other sites: Merchants House Museum, Elizabethan House, Smeaton's Tower and the Plymouth Dome. Of these, the Merchants House has some archival material such as posters on display, but it was not possible on the occasion of this survey to inspect it. Some original Drake and Raleigh documents are displayed at Buckland Abbey: others are deposited on loan at West Devon Record Office. Archive material is held in three departments of the main museum: Human History, Art, and Natural Sciences. The MuseunVs own archives are vulnerable to a policy of the accounts administration department of the City Council of destroying correpondence after 5 years. It has accession cards for all the collections since 1897, and index cards for donors, vendors, prints (artists & engravers), lenders, topography, ceramics, metal, glass, textiles etc. Curatorial correspondence with much valuable information occupies 2 filing cabinets but remains unsorted for want of staff time.

Howland St. [recommended by] Mr Planta/ 6 months This is probably intended for the Scottish landscape painter Hugh Irvine (1782– 1829), who exhibited from 8 Howland Street in 1809. “This young gentleman, at an early period of life, manifested a strong inclination for the study of art, and for several years his application has been unremitting. For some time he was a pupil of Mr Reinagle of London, whose merit as an artist is well known; and he has long been a close student in landscape afer Nature” (Thom, History of Aberdeen, 1: 198). He was the third son of Alexander Irvine, 18th laird of Drum, Aberdeenshire (1754–1844), and his wife Jean (Forbes; d.1786). His uncle was the artist and art dealer James Irvine (1757–1831). Alexander Irvine had four sons and a daughter; Alexander (b.1777), Charles (b.1780), Hugh, Francis, and daughter Christian. There is no record of a Ralph Irvine among the Irvines of Drum (Wimberley, Short Account), nor was there a Royal Academy student or exhibiting or listed artist of this name, so this was surely a clerical error or misunderstanding.

It is due to the untiring efforts of the Keeper of the Gallery, Mr. Stan de Teliga, that it has come about. His labours have not been easy for detailed information1 about some artists, especially those who lived in the first half of last century, has often been difficult to obtain. Where omissions occur, or if mistakes have been made, we would be glad of advice from those who can assist us. It is proposed to issue supplementary catalogues from time to time to add to this issue. • Artists in Exmouth Before 1910 April Marjoram Howard Jones

Artists in Exmouth before 1910 April Marjoram Howard Jones A considerable number of artists in the past discovered the outstanding beauty of Exmouth, with its fine coast and estuary. During the nineteenth centuryi Exmouth was frequented by many painters who were entranced by the broad estuarine views with a backdrop of hills, and by the quality of light over the sea and river. Some artists chose to settle in the town, others visited regularly or included Exmouth in their tour of the picturesque sites of Devon. Apart from the visual delights of Exmouth,ii an advantage for visitors and residents alike was the mildness of the climate and the health-giving properties of the air and seawater. The climate was “considered to be something like that of Pisa in befriending weak lungs - so mild that winter seldom sets in ‘til after Christmas”iii: for artists who wanted to work outside in the open landscape this fine weather was a very particular advantage. In 1791 Dr Jebb, the King’s doctor, declared that the “pureness and salubrity of the air” was “equal to that of the south of France”,iv and bathing machines (for access to the beneficial effects of seawater) were installed on Exmouth beach as early as 1759.v Exmouth was the earliest seaside resort to develop in Devon and the fact that it was becoming the “handsomest and most fashionable of watering places“vi meant that there was likely to be a ready market for artists’ work. Artists resident in Exmouth before 1910 The artist whom many Exmouth people associate with the town is Francis Danby ARA

In the past year we have been relieved to discover that, despite global financial difficulties, there is still a strong market for original drawings and watercolours of high quality. Traditionally the fields of British Watercolours on the one hand, and Old Master, 19th century and modern drawings on the other, have each had their own collectors, auctions and exhibitions. The aim of this catalogue, and indeed the aim of our shared gallery as a whole, is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas, and hopefully show that a good drawing is always a good drawing, whoever the artist and whatever the date. The present catalogue includes a wide range of British and European drawings and watercolours, placed more or less in chronological order, ranging in date from the 16th century until the present day. As a glance at the enclosed price list will show, the prices of the drawings and watercolours are equally broad in scope - from under £1,000 to around £10,000 – with a large number of interesting works at the lower end of this range.
