University of Connecticut OpenCommons@UConn Doctoral Dissertations University of Connecticut Graduate School 9-18-2018 Fréhel and Bessie Smith: A Cross-Cultural Study of the French Realist Singer and the African American Classic Blues Singer Tiffany Renée Jackson University of Connecticut - Storrs, [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations Recommended Citation Jackson, Tiffany Renée, "Fréhel and Bessie Smith: A Cross-Cultural Study of the French Realist Singer and the African American Classic Blues Singer" (2018). Doctoral Dissertations. 1946. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1946 Fréhel and Bessie Smith: A Cross-Cultural Study of the French Realist Singer and the African American Classic Blues Singer Tiffany Renée Jackson, DMA University of Connecticut, 2018 ABSTRACT In this dissertation I explore parallels between the lives and careers of the chan- son réaliste singer Fréhel (1891-1951), born Marguerite Boulc’h, and the classic blues singer Bessie Smith (1894-1937), and between the genres in which they worked. Both were tragic figures, whose struggles with love, abuse, and abandonment culminated in untimely ends that nevertheless did not overshadow their historical relevance. Drawing on literature in cultural studies and sociology that deals with feminism, race, and class, I compare the the two women’s formative environments and their subsequent biographi- cal histories, their career trajectories, the societal hierarchies from which they emerged, and, finally, their significance for developments in women’s autonomy in wider society. Chanson réaliste (realist song) was a French popular song category developed in the Parisian cabaret of the1880s and which attained its peak of wide dissemination and popularity from the 1920s through the 1940s. -

Does early Colonial Art provide an accurate guide to the nature and structure of the pre-European forests and woodlands of South-Eastern Australia? A study focusing on Victoria and Tasmania By Michael Francis Ryan B For Sei, University of Melbourne Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of: Master of Forestry Australian National University November 2009 Candidate’s Declaration I declare that this is the original work of Michael Francis Ryan of 84 Somerville Rd Yarraville, Victoria submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Forestry at the Australian National University. 2 Acknowledgements I am very grateful for the assistance and patience especially of Professor Peter Kanowski of the Australian National University for overseeing this work and providing guidance and advice on structure, content and editing. I would also like to acknowledge Professor Tim Bonyhady also of the Australian National University, whose expertise in the artwork field provided much inspiration and thoughtful analysis understanding early artwork. Bill Gammage, also from the ANU, provided excellent critical analysis using his extensive knowledge of the artists of the period to suggest valuable improvements. Ron Hateley from the University of Melbourne has an incredible knowledge of the early history of Victoria and of the ecology of Australia’s forests and woodlands. Ron continued to be a great sounding board for ideas and freely shared his own thoughts on early artwork in Western Victoria and the nature of the pre-European forests and I thank him for his assistance. Pat Groenhout, formally from VicForests, provided detailed comments and proof reading of manuscripts and this has considerably improved the readability and structure. -

These remarkable images – initially chosen by Goethe (1749–1832) for the Grand Duke of Saxe- Weimar-Eisenach and his own collection – offer a spec- tacular overview of the golden age of German drawing (approx. 1780–1850). In the late 18th century the city of Weimar, seat of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar, was Germany’s intellectual hub. A key figure at this enlightened court, Goethe accumulated numerous posts of cultu- ral responsibility, in addition to writing most of his works there. Himself a knowledgeable collector and draughtsman, he built up for the Grand Duke a handsome collection representing every facet of German drawing. -
James Duffield Harding (London 1798 - London 1863)
James Duffield Harding (London 1798 - London 1863) Bologna watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour and gum arabic 19.6 x 29.4 cm (7¾ x 11½ in) In this delightful watercolour James Duffield Harding’s has combined the timeless classicism of the city with such a charming theatrical portrayal of human interaction. The result is a truly radiant expression of the Emilia-Romagnan capital. In the foreground, Harding has depicted a group of figures in close interaction with one another. Five ladies, two gentlemen and one dog form a figural arch, the shape of which is loosely guided by the hats and headdress of the individuals. The rich overlap of the ladies’ skirts renders the individual forms more or less indistinguishable, creating a lively visual flow which seems to illustrate the conversation and further unify the group. As the dog looks eagerly beyond the group, the viewer is alerted to the presence of a mother and child dressed in rags at the periphery of the arch, tentatively approaching their well-dressed counterparts. As the eye is drawn along from this figural interplay to the classical architecture which frames the cityscape, Harding surprises the viewer with the figure of another lady who is leaning over the balustrade contemplating the view below. She is faceless; invisible but for her colourful dress and hat. The faceless form of this lady is cleverly mirrored by her classical companions who stand atop the architecture, their backs to the city; similarly surveying the view below which is inaccessible to the viewer. The present work was engraved by Edward Finden and published in Finden’s Illustrations of the Life and Works of Lord Byron. -
Revision and Exploration German Landscape
REVISION AND EXPLORATION GERMAN LANDSCAPE DEPICTION AND THEORY IN THE LATE 18TH CENTURY Ph.D. Thesis History of Art University College London Mark A. Cheetham June, 1982 THESIS ABSTRACT "Revision and Exploration: German Landscape Depiction and Theory in the Late Eighteenth Century" My thesis focuses on the work of German painters in Italy c.l770-1800, and addresses issues raised by their complex relationship with the 17th century Italianate landscape tradition. Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807), Johann Christian Reinhart (1761-1847), and Joseph Anton Koch (1768- 1839) worked in Italy precisely because they considered them- selves to be thg inheritors of the 17th century landscape style of Claude, Dughet, Rosa, and Nicolas Poussin. But while the German paintings do resemble the earlier works, they also revise the 17th century programme of representing Ideal nature. They are more detailed and precise in their depiction of natural phenomena; they also represent natural events and sites not included in the traditional canon. Extrapolating from 18th century critical terminology, I have developed the term "particularity" to focus attention on this unprecedented attentiontt the details of nature. I argue that the late 18th century German landscapes revise the Italianate landscape tradition so that it embodies particularity, and that the impetus for this change comes from two contemporary sources: natural history -- especially the nascent sciences of geology and biology -- and art theory. My argument is divided into three sections. In the first, I establish the existence and visual characteristics of particu- larity first by contrasting 17th century versions of the famous cascades at Tivoli (by Claude, Dughet, and others) with depic- tions of the same site by late 18th century German artists, and second, by describing the new sites which were explored and depicted by Hackert, Reinhart, and Koch. -
Press (TRAD CLEMENCE)
Press Release 30 May 2013 For immediate release Je ne sais quoi A music show by Nathalie Joly Institut français d’Ecosse Fringe 2013 8 – 26 August 2013, 6.15 pm (75 mins) Episode 1: Even days / Episode 2: Odd days Singer and actress Nathalie Joly presents Je ne sais quoi, a diptych show mixing music and theatre tribute to Yvette Guilbert, undisputed Queen of the Parisian café concert and friend of Freud. Accompanied by her pianist Jean-Pierre Gesbert, Nathalie Joly gives her voice to French cabaret singer Yvette Guilbert in this original production mixing music and theatre. Recalling the two most significant episodes of Guilbert’s life, Joly invites us to discover the witty and mischievous repertoire of the undisputed star of the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre who mesmerized and befriended Sigmund Freud before flying to New York to open a school of performing arts for deprived girls and invent the “Rythme Fondu”, precursor of poetry slam. Episode 1: 1890, in a Parisian cabaret, Freud hears Yvette Guilbert for the first time and literally succumbs to the charm of her interpretation and the profoundness of her songs. A lifelong friendship followed. Based on the original letters of their unpublished correspondence, Je ne sais quoi, episode 1 shows the 50-years long friendship between the French cabaret star and the Father of Psychoanalysis. The latter was fascinated by Guilbert and her songs, not only because they reminded him of the Paris of his youth, but by all that these songs expressed of profound sentiment, desire, conflict and humour in distress, accompanying his reflection on the relationship between the unconscious and sexuality. -

(Museums and Archives, a Museums and Galleries Commission Report, researched by Clare Conybeare and Anita Travers.) Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery was founded in 1897 and has been a local authority institution since its foundation. The museum service is responsible for four other sites: Merchants House Museum, Elizabethan House, Smeaton's Tower and the Plymouth Dome. Of these, the Merchants House has some archival material such as posters on display, but it was not possible on the occasion of this survey to inspect it. Some original Drake and Raleigh documents are displayed at Buckland Abbey: others are deposited on loan at West Devon Record Office. Archive material is held in three departments of the main museum: Human History, Art, and Natural Sciences. The MuseunVs own archives are vulnerable to a policy of the accounts administration department of the City Council of destroying correpondence after 5 years. It has accession cards for all the collections since 1897, and index cards for donors, vendors, prints (artists & engravers), lenders, topography, ceramics, metal, glass, textiles etc. Curatorial correspondence with much valuable information occupies 2 filing cabinets but remains unsorted for want of staff time. -
