He was born in Chichester, on 25th November, 1842, son of the artist James Hardy, Sr. (1801- 1879) and younger brother of James Hardy, Jr. (1832-1889). After a short time with the 7th Somerset Volunteers, Hardy borrowed some money from his brother and travelled to Paris. In 1864 he entered the Beaux Arts to study under the battle artist, Pielse. He returned to England in 1868 and found his work was in great demand. He was often invited to country estates to paint portraits, sporting pictures and animal studies. Hardy continued to enjoy commissions for portraits, animal studies and hunting scenes, but he decided to concentrate on painting genre subjects. From about 1870 his career flourished and he was elected a member of a number of societies including The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited 46 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1919 whilst also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institute. Stepping Out Signed Oil on Canvas 24 x 18 ins / 61 x 45.7 cms 2 Sidney Richard Percy 1821 - 1886 Sidney Richard Percy Williams was the fifth son of the artist Edward Williams. He was born in London and began his career when his elder brothers were already established artists. Percy’s very early work was signed 'Sidney Williams' but he was only 20 when he adopted the use of ‘Percy’ as the name under which his paintings were to achieve a greater popularity than those of any other member of the Williams family. When Percy married in 1863, he and his new family settled in Buckinghamshire. Their Regency home, Hill House was ideally placed for the study of the English wooded landscape, as it looked across the Misbourne Valley to the beech woods and beyond. Percy reached the peak of his popularity as an artist during the years he spent at Hill House and was able to support the extravagant tastes of his wife - maintaining a carriage and employing an army of servants. As well as the Lake District Percy was very fond of the Welsh countryside which he painted often and he also produced a number of Scottish landscapes. His paintings have a marked sense of design and his clarity and detail reflect his great interest in photography. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. On the Mawddach Marshes, North Wales Signed and Dated 1877 Oil on Canvas 24 x 38 ins / 61 x 96.5 cms Exhibited : RA 1877 3 Fredrik Marinus Kruseman 1816 - 1882 Born in Haarlem in 1816, Kruseman showed an early talent for drawing. Between 1832 and 1833 he attended the City Drawing School and he studied painting with Roosenboom. He would have come into contact with the great artist Schelfhout during this period, as he was a regular visitor to Roosenboom’s studio. In 1833 Kruseman made his debut at the Exhibition of Living Masters in The Hague. Kruseman moved to Kleve in 1836 and it was here, under the informal tutelage of B.C. Koekkoek, that he was now inspired to paint realistic landscapes and to give expression to the feeling that the landscape evoked in him. He learned how to paint trees and how to indicate skate tracks in the snow by applying white paint and then scratching it off whilst wet with the sharp end of a brush. In 1841 the artist moved to Brussels where he was to remain for most of his life. The salons and coffee houses there were natural meeting grounds for artists and amongst others Kruseman met Verboeckhoven here with whom he collaborated often. During the fifties and sixties Kruseman gave ruins and castles greater prominence in his work, more for Romantic effect than for accurate topography. Winter landscapes made up about two thirds of his work and during the later fifties his art came to full fruition. He introduced his first coral-like tree branches and the depth of his panoramic landscapes became more marked. His cool grey-blue tones gave way to a much warmer palette. This particular example is among the finest of the oeuvre. Kruseman worked well into the late seventies and eventually died in Saint-Gillis near Brussels on 25th May, 1882. Dutch Winter Landscape with Skaters Signed and Dated 1857 Oil on Canvas 193/4 x 271/2 ins / 52 x 69.8 cms 4 Charles Joseph Frédéric Soulacroix 1825 - 1889 Soulacroix was born in Montpellier in France on 6th July, 1825. He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in September, 1845, studying with the sculptors A.A. Dumont (1801-1884) and E.J. Ramey (1796-1852) and the German painter P. Cornelius (1783-1867). The artist won awards for both sculpture and painting and he made his debut at the Salon in 1849. Soulacroix painted a number of history paintings and he also decorated the dome and six side chapels in Notre Dame Cathedral between 1863 and 1865 at the request of Monseigneur Haffreingue, the Bishop of Boulogne-sur-Mer. In July, 1852 Soulacroix married Giacinta Diofebo in Rome. He worked there after his marriage and also in Parma, Pisa, Livorno and Florence. During his time in Italy he perfected his best known subject matter, scenes depicting 18th century costumed figures. Soulacroix excelled in painting figures enjoying the fashionable salons of Paris and Florence. He demonstrated his technical skills by painting elegant furniture and the fine silk and satin fabrics of dresses and wall coverings. This particular painting depicts three sumptuously dressed women enjoying afternoon tea, a ritual central to the vibrant
