PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION

• SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION

The University of Primorska (UP) was established in 2003. Today it has 9 members: four faculties, two colleges, two research centres and the Student Residence. As the university was established at a meeting point of international cultural and economic trends it is highly aware of the importance of researching and respecting the diversity between cultures and languages. The UP has participated in several projects dealing with diverse cultures and intercultural dialogue. It has established the Centre for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CJMK) that offers courses of different foreign languages as well as courses of Slovenian language for foreign students. The Centre conducts also elective courses that can be chosen by the students of the Faculty of Humanities. In the frame of the project Arbre à palabre the Centre organizes every other week cultural events which goal is to present, study and research cultures of different nations and languages, especially the ones less known (Chinese, Indian etc).

• ACCOMMODATION

Students will be accommodated in Youth Hostel Stara šola (Old School) Korte. The hostel is managed by the Student Organisation of UP (ŠOUP) and it was completely renovated in 2006. The Hostel offers all the necessary facilities for a comfortable stay. It is located in the centre of an old Istrian village. The exclusive location provides every visitor with the opportunity to visit one of the attractive coastal towns, which are full of memorable sights. At the same time, the village of Korte offers a peaceful location for those who seek tranquillity and nature. Number of beds: 17 rooms or at least 58 beds Additional services: - internet corner and internet access points in each room - left-luggage room - safe - laundry and dry cleaner’s - common room and a TV room - rent-a-bike - information on local tourist attractions.

Students will be welcomed on the first day of their course, 2 hours before the scheduled first class. We will meet in the CJMK premises, Gortanov trg 15 and go together to Korte, where the course will take place and the students will be accommodated.

An independent and guided language learning on the basis of modern methods and forms of the foreign language learning include pair work, group work and work in workshops, all of which are conducted according to the interactive approach with the use of computers, computer tools and the internet. An important form and work method is a self-directed learning, which enables the learners and tutors, who help them, to define the learners needs and interests and set their own learning path and speed of learning. In addition to the individual guided learning, every individual can self-evaluate his/her own learning path with the use of the language portfolio. Learners can evaluate the level of their knowledge according to the Common European Framework. CJMK, over 200 m² in size, offers multimedia room for self-directed learning, two smaller classrooms and a bigger classroom. There is also a free reading area with newspapers and magazines in foreign languages, free internet and a reception desk.

3 • OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

- SITE VISITS

The Coastal-Karst region offers numerous cultural and natural sites. Visitors can go on shorter half- day trips into the hinterland of the Slovenian Istria, where they can explore the typical Istrian architecture and culture, see the historical town centres of Koper, Izola, and Piran, or go on boat trips along the Slovenian coast past the Strunjan and Sečovlje salt-pans. On whole-day trips, they can discover the secrets of the Karst underworld of Škocjan and Postojna Caves, or admire the elegance of the white Karst horse, the Lipizzaner. Within the course framework, participants will be offered two shorter trips (description follows).

- SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION)

Koper offers unlimited sports and recreation possibilities, ranging from water sports (swimming, sailing, windsurfing, etc.) to various sport activities in the sports & recreational centre Bonifika (tennis, volleyball, basketball, 5-a-side football, etc.). The entire coast is connected by cycling and walking routes, providing recreational possibility also for runners and rollerblading enthusiasts. In addition to tennis, the sports centre offers the possibility of recreational horse-back riding. Adequate recreation is also provided by a number of fitness clubs.

- ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES)

In Koper there is a theatre and a state-of-the-art cinema with three halls playing 9 films a day. ŠOUP sees to a diversified extra-curricular student life. It offers the possibility of participation in cultural, artistic, sports and educational areas. In the cultural area, students are welcome to participate in creating the university newspaper Kažin, exhibit their works of art in the student gallery Zapor, take part in the student theatre Menander or join the Academy Choir of the Univerity of Primorska. The Department of Sports and Recreation provides students with various types of daily recreation (aerobics, ball games, etc.) and the possibility of participating also in the university league of different sports (basketball, football, volleyball, nine-pin bowling). If students wish to peek also into other forms of education, they can turn to the Department of Education and Student Counselling, apart from their weekly cinematheque and travel presentations organizing also various courses, workshops, lectures and other activities, that can in many ways enrich students’ daily lives.

2. EXCURSIONS (two itineraries across the Slovenian Istria) a) Olive trees and salt – across Šmarje, Koštabona, Krkavče, Sveti Peter, to the Sečovlje salt-pans (starting in Koper, visiting Šmarje, Koštabona, Puče, Krkavče, Sveti Peter, and Sečovlje salt pans)

b) Across the land of refosco – from Karst Edge across Bržanija and Šavrinija towards the sea (starting from , through to Črni Kal, visiting , Podpeč, , , , then via Gračišče, Sv.Anton, Čežarji, , towards Koper).
