Tom Hanks, Hollywood’s favourite uncle, could not have been better cast for the role of Chesley ‘‘Sully’’ Sullenberger, the real-life pilot who made the call to crash-land a plane on the Hudson River with 155 people on-board. He’s a straightforward and likeable man – the type that Uncle Hanks plays best – confronted with a horrifying life-or-death scenario that demands extraordinary things from ordinary people. It may come as a surprise, then, that Clint Eastwood’s film starts immediately after everyone is saved. Faced with news reporters hailing him as a hero and crash investigators that suspect he’s anything but, Sully’s actions are questioned. Did he make the right call or did he needlessly put all those passengers at risk? As part of a series on hospitality providers in Marlborough, reporter Oliver Lewis chatted to CBD Cafe, Bakery and Deli co-owner Tania Godsall about her new central Blenheim business.

How did you get into hos- pitality Tania, and what do you enjoy about it as a career? I come from a family of chefs and have been around food my whole life, culminating in joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force and attaining my London City and Guilds qualifications. I love sharing my love of with people who are also passionate about food. Why did you start the cafe and what were you doing beforehand? My husband and I had been looking for a cafe for quite some time and this opportunity came along. Before this I was the Marl- borough account manager for Bidvest Foodservice. What kind of feedback have you been getting from customers so far? Every day after work, in the dark and the cold, you will find Tracey Johnson in the dressage arena with her horse, Apollo. That dedication has paid off for Tracey, who has been named National Judge of the Year 2016 at the Dressage NZ Conference. Tracey, who performs in dress- age at a Grand Prix level, says her experience in equestrian sport has helped her to learn what makes a good rider. ‘‘If you ride and train at that level, it is natural that you under- stand the biomechanics of the horse and the rider, and how they work together.’’ Tracey says she is lucky to have had supportive parents and some very good mentors along the way. Since doing ‘‘the pony club thing’’ from the age of 7, Tracey started teaching students to ride, and later judged pony club compe- titions while learning to do dress- age in her earlier 20s. She has worked her way up dressage competition levels while judging at competitions across the country. ‘‘I think as a judge you can go into a major competition as ner- vous as a rider would (be), because you really want to get it right. You’re certainly under scrutiny as well.’’ Tracey also coaches riders at the weekend and places judges at various competitions as the Marl- borough judges officer.
