Other enactments against them were occasionally renewed, and those proscriptions were in force until the eighteenth century. In 1715 occurred the "Loch Lomond Expedition," against the Macgregors, who, in defiance of the laws against them continued their marauding expeditions under the celebrated Rob Roy Macgregor, and were in reality public robbers. They had seized all the boats on the lake, invaded the island of Inch- Murrin, killed many of the deer belonging to the Duke of Montrose, and committed other excesses. A strong force of volunteers from towns in the counties of Renfrew and Ayr was sent against them to recover the boats, assisted by about one hundred seamen from the ships of war in the Clyde, commanded by seven officers. They sailed up the Leven, and were drawn three miles 4n the course by horses. The contemporary account quaintly states that when " the pinnaces and boats within the mouth of the Loch had spread their sails, and the men on the shore had ranged themselves in order, marching along the side of the Loch for scouring the coast, they made altogether so very fine an appearance as had never been seen in that place before, and might have gratified even a curious person." The Macgregors, however, had disappeared, and the volunteers returned to Dunbarton, after securing the captured booty, without any demonstration of their courage. The Leven is the discharge from Loch Lomond, and traverses the beautiful vale nearly six miles to the Clyde at Dunbarton Castle.

    Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

    Church and Community in Later Medieval Glasgow: An Introductory Essay* by John Nelson MINER** Later medieval Glasgow has not yet found its place in urban history, mainly because most writers have concentrated on the modern, industrial period and those historians who have devoted attention to the pre-industrial city have failed to reach any consensus as to the extent of its modest expansion in the period circa 1450 to 1550 or the reasons behind it. In this study, the specific point is made that it is the ecclesiastical structure of Glasgow that will best serve towards an appreciation of the total urban community. This central point has not so far been developed even in the use of the published sources, which have to be looked at afresh in the above context.     Passions of the Pope: Analysing emotional rhetoric in Pope Gregory VII’s letters Kieryn Mascarenhas 2020 Illustration of Pope Gregory VII from Paul of Bernried’s Vita Gregorii VII (c. 1128), Heiligenkreuz Abbey, Austria A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of BA (Hons) in History, University of Sydney ABSTRACT In recent years, emotions have become a popular lens for historical analysis. Building on existing scholarship, this thesis explores the emotions of Pope Gregory VII, an eleventh- century pope notable for his reform efforts and role in the Investiture Controversy. Focusing on Gregory’s papal letters, this study will analyse the displays of three key emotions: anger, love, and sorrow, to determine how and why Gregory used these displays to achieve his political and religious objectives. Gregory wielded emotional rhetoric in his papal letters to solidify his papal authority, construct and maintain key relationships, and garner support for his reform agenda. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am deeply indebted to Dr Hélène Sirantoine and Dr John Gagné. He served the Archdiocese as priest and then as Chancellor. He was chosen Bishop of Tropeaou in December 1970. On 9th September 1979, he took over as Locum Tenens. On the 16th April 1988, the Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople unanimously elected him as Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain. His Eminence has worked tirelessly and with total devotion to build local missional Greek communities on these islands. Their integration, education, growth and development in Great Britain, together with his ecumenical hospitality and friendship, have been the hallmark of his ministry. As a longstanding friend of the Church of England, he has been a vital link between Lambeth Palace and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. His support in planning and preparing the visit of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew last year enabled the Church of England to be enriched by a visit of spiritual depth and ecumenical significance. He is a man of peace. His commitment to raising awareness and promoting respect and friendship between all communities has been a source of encouragement and hope to many. St. Anselm was born of noble parents, at Aoust, in Piedmont, about the year 1033.     SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 Father John Boll, Diocesan Archivist No 81 ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE DEFIES POPE PAUL The Conflict Intensifies By John Mutig, published in the September 2, 1976 edition of the Catholic Herald VATICAN CITY (NC) Following the dramatic traditionalist Mass celebrated August 29 by suspended Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the next move in the escalating conflict between Rome and the ultra- conservative archbishop belongs to Pope Paul VI. Many observers and Church officials here guess that the Pope will formally excommunicate the 70 year-old archbishop for celebrating the Mass in Lille, France. Pope Paul himself has called the celebration “a challenge to these keys placed in our hands by Christ.” Church lawyers have said that the process of formal excommunication would take at least a month to complete. A decree of excommunication, should one be issued by Pope Paul, would be the final act in a long series of skirmishes between the Vatican and the archbishop, who rejects most of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council as heresy and still celebrates the pre- conciliar Mass in Latin. Archbishop Lefebvre, who has thousands of followers in the US, England, France and other western European countries, was suspend- ed from priestly func- tions July 24. The suspension was the Vatican’s reaction to the illegal ordination of 13 priests June 29 by the archbishop at his ultra- conservative Econe Sem- inary in Switzerland.
