NAKUL DEV MAHAJAN Nakul Dev Mahajan, “Hollywood’s Favorite Bollywood Choreographer,” is a world renowned and award winning American based Bollywood Choreographer. He is considered a pioneer in the field, by being the very first choreographer to bring Bollywood to American daytime and primetime television, opening up the first Bollywood Dance company/school in the US and being the first to bring Bollywood to the White House to name a few. Nakul’s created national press and entertainment attention in 2003 when he opened his dance studio in Los Angeles, which ultimately lead to his 12 years association with the Emmy winning show, So You Think You Can Dance. He has worked with a plethora of celebrities and public figures such as Michelle Obama, Paula Abdul, David Schwimmer, Steve Carrel and Academy Award winners Natalie Portman and A.R. Rahman to name a few. Some of his major Hollywood choreography credits include Dancing with the Stars, America’s Best Dance Crew, The Nobel Peace Prize Concert, Dance Moms, Fuller House, The Miss America Pageant, The World’s Best, Superstars of Dance and A.R. Rahman’s World Tour: Jai Ho. Today, Nakul’s dance company, NDM Bollywood Dance Productions and Studios Inc., has grown into one of the most popular Bollywood Dance Schools in the United States and he enriches over 3000 students each year through his studios and various conventions. Aside from 7 locations that NDM offers throughout the Los Angeles area, Nakul’s currently working on the hit animated series, Mira, Royal Detective on Disney Junior. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Constructing Diasporic Identity Through Kathak Dance: Flexibility, Fixity, and Nationality in London and Los Angeles A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Shweta Saraswat 2019 © Copyright by Shweta Saraswat 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Constructing Diasporic Identity Through Kathak Dance: Flexibility, Fixity, and Nationality in London and Los Angeles by Shweta Saraswat Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Anurima Banerji, Chair This dissertation focuses on the role of the classical Indian dance form Kathak in negotiating questions of cultural identity and national affiliation among members of the Indian diaspora residing in London, UK, and Los Angeles, USA. This study considers how institutional actions and discourses related to the practice of Kathak dance in these two cities and the personal experiences of dancers themselves reflect certain political, aesthetic, and social values that impact the formation of diasporic identity. The dissertation argues that Indian diasporic subjects negotiate a fundamental tension through their practice of Kathak dance: the tension between Kathak’s inherent flexibility and contextual conditions of fixity. ii As described in Chapter 1, Kathak’s inherent flexibility refers to certain foundational elements of the dance that center around creative interpretation, improvisation, and immersive practice (riyaaz), as well as the expression of multiple identities that these foundational elements enable. A discourse of Kathak’s flexibility frames the dancer’s transcendence and/or transformation of socially assigned identifications as an act of aesthetic virtuosity with cross- cultural significance.

So You Think You Can Dance: More than Entertainment Stacy Smith Senior Exercise Department of Sociology 1/30/09 1 Abstract Reality dance shows contain embedded gender norms, however, how women relate to these gender norms have gone unexplored. Literature suggests that popular culture is the place where most people receive their information and that it is a source of socialization that competes with other socializing agents to provide role models and information that affect attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. In this exploratory study, a content analysis of 5 clips from the last season of So You Think You Can Dance is used to identify what gender norms are embedded in reoccurring themes concerning costuming, body image, movement vocabulary, and narrative. Surveys are used in order to get a general idea of how women may relate to the show and to discover the various reasons why women are attracted to the show. These surveys also helped form the appropriate questions for my interviews which explore how women interpret, use, and negotiate the gender norms embedded in the show. I argue that the way in which women receive the embedded gender norms of the show can be affected by various factors. Once these gender norms are received, women may interpret, use, or negotiate the gender norms in different ways which can lead female fans to accept the traditional gender norms and use them in their personal lives, allowing dominant ideologies to be reinforced and contribute to gender inequalities within society. 2 Introduction Today, there is a growing dance craze as the number of reality dance shows continue to increase with shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Best Dance Crew, Dancing With the Stars, Dance War, Superstars of Dance, and Step It Up and Dance.

In 1999 - 2000, the Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition, a group comprised of the National Latino Media Council (NLMC), the National Asian/Pacific American Media Coalition, the NAACP and the American Indians in Film and Television, persuaded the four major television networks, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, to sign unprecedented Memoranda of Understanding. Before these memoranda were signed, we saw much fewer people of color on television than we do today. The Memoranda serve to diversify the networks' workforce both in front and behind the camera and to open up procurement opportunities for people of color. These initiatives have incrementally increased diversity over the past ten years; however, the job is far from complete. In 1999, Greg Braxton, of the Los Angeles Times, wrote that out of the 24 new shows debuting at ABC, NBC CBS, and FOX, there was not one single person of color in a lead or regular role. Ten years later, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) reports the following breakdown of film and TV roles for 2008: 72.5% Caucasian, 13.3% African-American, 6.4% Latino-Hispanic, 3.8% Asian & Pacific Islander, .03% Native American and 3.8% other/unknown. The 9th annual “Report Cards” summarize the progress and/or shortfalls of the networks’ efforts to diversify their workforce and increase minority vendor contracts in calendar year 2009.
