COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Jazz technique and to develop a “thinking body” through active participation and personal discovery. Drawing on a variety of influences, students will be able to understand and demonstrate the aesthetic attributes and styles of Jazz dance by focusing on rhythm, gravity, isolations, coordination, and alignment. Students will also become familiar with terminology and historical aspects associated with Jazz dance. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES • To establIsh a consIstency of ‘daILy’ studio practIce and towards usIng jazz class progressIon to buiLd a ‘permanent’ foundatIon for buiLding your technique • The student wILL demonstrate an understanding of beginning/Intermediate jazz termInology. • The student wILL be able to consIstentLy execute proper body aLIgnment and body- mechanic princIples in statIc and dynamIc movement. • Students wILL deveLop and increase in strength, flexibiLIty, baLance, endurance, coordinatIon, and precIsIon in executIng barre exercIses and center floor combinatIons. • Students wILL buiLd musIcaL, rhythmIc, phrasIng, and spatIaL skiLLs suitable to the technique and style of jazz dance. • Students wILL learn aspects of jazz dance history. Page 1 of 57 Dear Teachers, Dancers, Family and Friends, Welcome to the 2019 Season at Tribute National Talent. As we celebrate our 8th season, we feel very blessed to host an event that gives us the opportunity to do what we love while spending time with so many wonderful people. We hope you feel very welcome and a part of our family as you enjoy seeing all the outstanding dancers who will grace the stage this weekend. As we grow older, we begin to see things in a different light and our thoughts and feelings seem to be more important and significant. Over the last several years I have written welcome letters that talk about what Tribute is all about. Now going into our 8th season, I just wanted to simply say THANK YOU. As parents, we cherish every moment we can spend with our kids as they grow. Dance teachers also feel this way since they are like family as they see the dancers grow up in the studio and then graduate. In 2010 after my father passed, I knew I had to make some changes in my life so I could be a better husband and father. My son was 7 years old and my daughter was 2 years old at the time. I remember that before I started Tribute, I missed so much time with my own family when I was gone on the road so often and then all summer doing nationals. As I share this picture with you of me and my children from 2014, I am reminded of how truly blessed I am. -

Desmond Richardson and Company Will Have a Residency at Miami's
Jordan Levin JULY 31, 2015 Desmond Richardson and company will have a residency at Miami’s YoungArts i BY JORDAN LEVIN [email protected] Choreographer Desmond Richardson and his Complexions Contemporary Ballet will be YoungArts first resident dance company, the National YoungArts Foundation has announced. Richardson, a 1986 YoungArts winner and celebrated dancer who has taught frequently at the group’s annual YoungArts week, and his troupe will be in Miami Oct. 25- Nov. 8. Working at the JewelBox on the YoungArts campus in downtown Miami, which has been renovated to include new dance studios, they’ll prepare a new piece by choreographer Dwight Rhoden. The piece will have its premiere during Complexions’ season at New York’s Joyce Theater Nov. 17-29, but Miami audiences will get a preview in an Outside the Box performance on the YoungArts plaza on Nov. 7. This is YoungArts’ second artist residency program, following one for visual artists launched in June 2014. They are part of the foundation’s efforts to expand beyond its trademark programs for teenage artists in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, with master classes, scholarships and awards. The Complexions visit is sponsored by a grant from ArtPlace America, a national partnership among the federal government, foundations and financial institutions, which aims to integrate the arts with community development. “As YoungArts continues to identify and support young artists across the country, we are also expanding our programs to assist them throughout their careers,” says Lisa Leone, vice president of artistic programs. “This residency is just one example of how we are addressing the needs of artists across generations.” The multi-talented Richardson’s many credits include stints with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and American Ballet Theater, working as a choreographer and guest performer on So You Think You Can Dance, and performing with pop artists including Michael Jackson, Prince, Aretha Franklin and Madonna. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Constructing Diasporic Identity Through Kathak Dance: Flexibility, Fixity, and Nationality in London and Los Angeles A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Shweta Saraswat 2019 © Copyright by Shweta Saraswat 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Constructing Diasporic Identity Through Kathak Dance: Flexibility, Fixity, and Nationality in London and Los Angeles by Shweta Saraswat Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Anurima Banerji, Chair This dissertation focuses on the role of the classical Indian dance form Kathak in negotiating questions of cultural identity and national affiliation among members of the Indian diaspora residing in London, UK, and Los Angeles, USA. This study considers how institutional actions and discourses related to the practice of Kathak dance in these two cities and the personal experiences of dancers themselves reflect certain political, aesthetic, and social values that impact the formation of diasporic identity. The dissertation argues that Indian diasporic subjects negotiate a fundamental tension through their practice of Kathak dance: the tension between Kathak’s inherent flexibility and contextual conditions of fixity. ii As described in Chapter 1, Kathak’s inherent flexibility refers to certain foundational elements of the dance that center around creative interpretation, improvisation, and immersive practice (riyaaz), as well as the expression of multiple identities that these foundational elements enable. A discourse of Kathak’s flexibility frames the dancer’s transcendence and/or transformation of socially assigned identifications as an act of aesthetic virtuosity with cross- cultural significance.
