FEDERICO FELLINI nasce a Rimini il 20 gennaio 1920 da famiglia pic- colo-borghese. Il padre proviene da Gambettola e fa il rappresentante di commercio di generi ali- mentari, mentre la madre è una semplice casalin- ga. Il giovane Federico frequenta il liceo classico della città ma lo studio non fa molto per lui. Comincia allora a procurarsi i primi piccoli guadagni come caricaturista: il gesto- re del cinema Fulgor, infatti, gli commissiona ritratti di attori celebri da esporre come richiamo. Nell'estate del 1937 Fellini fonda, in società con il pittore Demos Bonini, la bottega "Febo", dove i due eseguono caricature di villeggianti. Durante il 1938 sviluppa una sorta di collabo- razione epistolare con giornali e riviste, come disegnatore di vignette: la "Domenica del Corriere" gliene pubblica una dozzina nella rubrica "Cartoline dal pubblico", mentre con il settimanale fiorentino "420" il rapporto diventa più professionale e prosegue fino ad accavallarsi con il primo periodo del "Marc'Aurelio". In questi anni Fellini vive già sta- bilmente a Roma, dove si è trasferito nel gennaio 1939, con la scusa di iscriversi a giurisprudenza. Fin dai primi tempi, frequenta il mondo dell'avanspettacolo e della ra- dio, dove conosce, fra gli altri, Aldo Fabrizi, Erminio Macario e Marcel- lo Marchesi, e comincia a scrivere copioni e gag. Alla radio incontra, nel 1943, anche Giulietta Masina che sta interpretando il personaggio di Pallina, ideato dallo stesso Fellini. Nell'ottobre di quell'anno i due si sposano. Per il cinema ha già iniziato a lavorare fin dal 1939, come "gagman" (oltre a scrive battute per alcuni film girati da Macario).

Lacreme napulitane è un titolo che richiama non solo una famosa canzone melodica (non a caso questa riecheggia, assieme alle note di Torna, nei titoli di testa di Catene, film decisamente importante di Raffaello Matarazzo, diretto nel 1950, che rivitalizzò un genere filmico solidarmente connesso alla canzone); non solo è il medesimo titolo di un film diretto da Ciro Ippolito, con Mario Merola, nel 1981 (film che procede in una sorta di ricostruzione brechtiana di un intero genere del cinema italiano riferito al vissuto storico e tradizionale e anche stereotipato di Napoli: genere che, dai primissimi film muti, giunge a una sua versione “cristallina” in un film del 1926 di Roberto Roberti, Napoli che canta, e, attraverso Matarazzo e vari autori italiani, ma altresì attraverso l’ibridazione con la sceneggiata e con il film sul contrabbando e la camorra, si conclude negli anni Ottanta del Novecento). Lacreme napulitane è un titolo che anzitutto focalizza motivi molto precisi, che riguardano il piano espressivo e il piano socio-culturale nei quali si colloca e si definisce un ben definito repertorio del cinema italiano, rivolto ad esprimere le varie Gino Frezza culture di Napoli: una forma di cinema che si integra con la canzone e non potrebbe esistere senza l’amalgama costitutivo con essa.
