This phenomenon is not altogether novel to the country. During the Liberation War of 1971, Bengali freedom fighters faced staunch opposition from the Pakistani armed forces as well as Islamist militias under the control of Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist political party. Even after attaining its independence, Bangladesh has struggled to uphold the pillars of democracy and secularism due to political, social and religious drivers. Between January 2005 and June 2015, nearly 600 people have died in Islamic terrorist attacks in the country. These militant outfits either have close ties to or are part of Al Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and the Islamic State (ISIS). Despite such troubling signs and the fact that it is the fourth largest Muslim majority country in the world, Bangladesh has generally received little attention from academics of security studies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the drivers and trends of Sunni Salafi jihadist groups operating in Bangladesh to ascertain the implications for counterterrorism activities. Political, social and religious interventions that go beyond the hard approach must be undertaken to control the mounting threat of Islamist terrorism to the security and stability of the nation.

The country was founded on the basis of religious harmony and diverseness of ethnicity and culture, a unique characteristic among Muslim majority countries. In recent years, Bangladesh has suffered from transnational extremism, which has crept into the very fabric of the society. In recent years’ violent extremism is a result of Islamist radicalisation considered as one of the major concerns in Bangladesh. After the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in July 2016, the depth of violent extremism in Bangladesh unearthed the depth of extremists’ influence in our society.

  • Bangladesh 2016 International Religious Freedom Report
BANGLADESH 2016 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution designates Islam as the state religion but upholds the principle of secularism. It prohibits religious discrimination and provides for equality for all religions. Parliament enacted a new law further regulating groups receiving foreign funding, including religious organizations. The government provided guidance to imams throughout the country on some aspects of the content of their sermons in an effort to prevent support of militancy and said it would monitor mosques for provocative messaging. The government made some progress in arresting and indicting attackers of bloggers from previous years, although top officials continued to blame writers for offending religious sentiments. According to religious minority groups, the government continued to discriminate against them in property disputes and did not adequately protect them from attacks. The government did not adjudicate any of the more than one million pending restitution cases involving land seized from Hindus declared to be enemies of the state before the country’s independence. Terrorist organizations claimed responsibility for a significant number of attacks, many of them fatal, against multiple religious minorities. There were at least 24 individuals killed in these attacks including members of the country’s Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, and other minority communities. Terrorist groups also targeted religious converts, Shia, and individuals who engaged in activities deemed atheistic. On July 1, five militants attacked a restaurant in Dhaka, targeting mostly non-Muslims; 24 were killed, including two police officers. Individuals and groups continued to threaten bloggers and other individuals for offending Islam; attackers claiming affiliation with al-Qaida killed one blogger on April 6.

  • Historical Emergence of Islam in Greater Mymensingh District: the Role of Sufis, Muslim Scholars, Madrasah and Mosques Muhammad Ismail,1 Amdadul Haque Khan2
JOURNAL OF CREATIVE WRITING VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2 2020, PP 35 – 59 ISSN 2410-6259 © DISC INTERNATIONAL Historical Emergence of Islam in Greater Mymensingh District: The Role of Sufis, Muslim Scholars, Madrasah and Mosques Muhammad Ismail,1 Amdadul Haque Khan2 ABSTRACT Despite the fact that the greater Mymensingh is a vast region in Bangladesh, very few records are found written in English language on the historical emergence of Islam in this region. This Mymensingh was established in 1787AD as a district but Islam came here long ago with the hands of Sufis, and Islamic scholars (Ulama). This paper discusses firstly, how Islam came into Mymensingh with the hands of Sufis in its early period and secondly, how Islam was later maintained at the recent past by the hands of renowned Ulama of the Mymensingh. This chapter also discusses the geographical discussion of this great area. This paper gives historical account of how Sufis, Ulama, Madrasah and mosques developed in Mymensingh and how they are still playing its role in the spread of Islam. Both Madrasa and mosque serve the Muslim community through education; while Ulama are spiritually motivating for self improvement in the path of religion. They also teach their followers the morality and ethics. Therefore, this paper has ultimately shows how Islam spread in this region with the help of Ulama, Madrasah and mosque. The main contribution was accomplished by the Sufi and saints who came many centuries ago. Keywords: Mymensingh, Madrasah, Sufi, Muslim Scholars, Mosques INTRODUCTION Islam did not emerge in Greater Mymensingh all of a sudden. History says that Sufis, Muslim scholars (Ulama), Madrasah and Mosques played an important role in the spread of Islam.
