Photo THE HUNGRY BIRD: CATERPILLAR TRICKS ...... 300 by Peter Burke Dave Leatherman PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE New Year’s Resolutions Bill Kaempfer So, who’s still on track with their 2013 New Year’s resolutions? I am! I resolved to use eBird this year—all the time, complete lists, no excuses. And I’m still on track. Although eBird is pretty easy to use, it does require some effort, yet using eBird keeps me better organized as a record keeper, on track and current. And using eBird has an enormous payoff beyond just tracking one’s own list. I now use it all the time to see what’s showing up in Colorado and elsewhere, and what’s on the lists of others. I use it for planning my trips, looking at historical records and so forth. As an example of some things I’ve learned using eBird informa- tion, the other day (once I had made my goal of 300 species observed for Colorado during 2013) I used eBird to compare Colorado Birding activity to the rest of the country. I discovered just how much birding goes on in our state. Of the 50 states, Colorado ranks 6th for number of species recorded and verified by eBird so far for 2013, ranking be- hind only Texas, California, Florida, Arizona and New Mexico. As of mid-August there were 11 birders who had managed the 300 year-list level in our state, which ranked third in the country behind bird- ing behemoths Texas and California. My conclusion? Colorado has amazing bird variety and that variety keeps some pretty outstanding birders busy. With all those birds and birders, do we also have a state birding organization that delivers? I certainly think so, and this edition of Colorado Birds will make clear some of the things that the CFO is doing to make birding in Colorado even better. First is Colorado Birds itself, the CFO’s quarterly journal. With this issue we welcome Peter Burke as our new editor after seven plus years of excellent work by previous editor, Nathan Pieplow. In July I thanked Nathan for his outstanding efforts toward putting the state of birds and birding in Colorado in print. To get to know Peter better, you may want to visit Ted Floyd’s blog on the CFO website (http://www.cfobirds.org/busi- ness/index.php#Last%20Chance%20-%20First) or see Ted Floyd’s Conversations on page 232. In addition, the CFO has invested in significant changes to its Colorado Birds Records Committee site. An entirely new records submission process took effect in late August that makes submitting a formal record of a rare sighting much easier. Doug Faulkner, chair of the CBRC, explains these changes on page 248. Finally, the major event that defines CFO every year is its con- 228 Colorado Birds October 2013 Vol. 47 No. 4 vention. At the 2013 con- vention in Cortez, we an- nounced our plans to host the 2014 convention in Sterling—as far from Cor- tez as we could get! I’d like to confirm this and pass on the additional news that the CFO Board has decid- ed to take the plunge and have the 2014 convention August 28-31. An August convention in North- east Colorado gives CFO members the best possible opportunity to explore the spectacular post-breeding shorebird migration that comes across the high plains. One of the preeminent field ornithologists of his time, Jon has been Chief Consultant on the National Geographic Field Guide since the first publishing in 1983. His Field Guide to Warblers of North America (Peterson se- ries, 1997 and co-authored with Kimball Garrett) is perhaps the finest and most complete work on that subject. Finally, Jon collaborated with our own John Vanderpoel to create The Advanced Birding Video Series that includes Humming- birds of North America, The Large Gulls of North America and The Small Gulls of North America.     The Avian Enigma: “Hibernation” by Common Poorwills (Phalaenoptilus nuttalli) CHRISTOPHER P. WOODS AND R. MARK BRIGHAM University of Regina, Department of Biology, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada Abstract. Common Poorwills, small nocturnal insectivorous birds found across western North America, are seemingly unique because of their alleged ability to remain torpid for extended periods during winter. We used temperature- sensitive radio transmitters to assess patterns of torpor use at sites in the Sonoran desert of southern Arizona. Poorwills used torpor extensively whenever ambient temperature (Ta) dropped below 10° C, and there was little evidence for ther- moregulation when Ta was above 5° C. During the winter months (December through February), birds remained entirely inactive on 72% of bird-nights, and continuously inactive periods of 10 days or longer were common. The extent of inactivity is similar behaviorally to that of hibernating small mammals. Roost selection, however, facilitated routine passive solar warming, and inactive birds exhibited a regular pattern of arousal on sunny days, followed by reentry into torpor at sunset. We argue that daily arousals are likely an adaptation to the circumstances that characterize surface dormancy. We hypothesize that the re- lationship between Ta and availability of flying insects at night, in combination with unique ecological aspects of arid regions, contributed to the evolution of multiday torpor use by poorwills. Introduction Amongst birds, species in 29 families representing 11 orders have been reported capable of a variety of heterothermic responses (reviewed by McKechnie and Lovegrove 2002). Most birds known to use true torpor are small-bodied special- ized foragers, and hummingbirds are the best studied of these (McNab 2002).

    Volunteers Concerned about Nightjars Citizen scientists that participate in the thousands of programs worldwide are often not professionally trained biologists; however, they possess a desire to contribute their free time to something that they value. Whether uploading species lists into eBird, helping to actively clean and restore wetlands, or venturing into the eve to listen for nightjars, it is understood that a personal sense of fulfillment keeps people engaged in these programs. In particular, Nightjar Network surveyors deserve an even bigger pat on the back for their efforts. For one, conducting evening work can be a bit of a grind. Additionally, seeing the bird is half the fun; so conducting a bird survey where you will likely never see the bird my not seem as satisfying. We assume you all have your own reasons for embarking on your journey with us: Whether you are the rare night owl, you feel a certain fulfillment in the act of volunteering, or you just can’t get enough of birds in the daylight hours that you must grind through the night hours in the hopes of adding one of these awesome birds to your day list! We hope you value your participation and continued support of this program as much as we do. Eleven years of Nightjar Survey Data and What’s to Come 2018 closed out our 11th (!) year conducting nightjar surveys as part of the network. Since its establishment in 2007, over 3,000 survey routes have been conducted by 646 dedicated volunteers throughout the US (Figure 1). Volunteers have included a wide range of concerned citizens from agency biologists to retired school teachers to young students - people who enjoy experiencing the night sounds while contributing to what we know about this unusual group of birds.

The Large-tailed Nightjar Caprimulgus macrurus Horsfield, 1821, complex, as currently recognized, comprises 12 taxa which are grouped into four species based on their territorial songs. However, species limits are based on very small samples of a limited number of taxa in the complex. To further document species limits in the complex, we analysed 109 sound recordings representing all recognized taxa. Principal components analysis suggests the existence of six vocally distinct groups within the complex. Discriminant function analysis assigned 98-100% of individuals correctly to their group. Each of these groups differs diagnosably from all other groups by up to eight vocal characters, and each group is recognizable by ear. We propose to treat these six groups as species based on multiple differences in territorial songs, the lack of intermediate vocal types, the concordance of the geographic distribution of vocal types and morphology-based taxonomic boundaries and the sympatry of two groups in northeastern peninsular India without signs of intergradation.

    BC Nightjar Survey Two-Species Protocol Thank you for participating in the WildResearch Nightjar Survey! Overview: Signing up for a BC Nightjar Survey route will require two to three hours of surveying and one hour of data entry: Each route is a series of six road-side stations Each route needs to be surveyed once per year between May 15 and June 30 Starting at 30 minutes before sunset, the six stations are surveyed in one direction Starting at 30 minutes after sunset, the six stations are resurveyed in the opposite direction At each station, you will listen quietly for nightjars for six minutes Anyone with a vehicle and good hearing is capable of conducting a BC Nightjar Survey! Objective: The data you are helping to collect will be used to expand our understanding of populations of Common Poorwills and Common Nighthawks in British Columbia. Dept. of Zoology, BBMS, University of New England, Armidale, NSW 2351, Australia; [email protected] Abstract We review recent studies of torpor use by free-ranging caprimulgiform birds in North America and Australia: common poorwill (45 g), whip-poor-will (55 g), common nighthawk (80 g), Australian owlet-nightjar (50 g), and Tawny Frogmouth (500 g). Reproductive activity, ambient temperature, body size, and prey abundance influence the energy status of endotherms and may be correlated with torpor use under natural conditions; our review suggests that no one factor is most important. To date, most studies have been correlational in the wild, and experimental studies at multiple locales are now needed to resolve uncertainties concerning the evolutionary and ecological significance of torpor.
