US Credits 3/0/3 EN 4477 TRENDS in CONTEMPORARY BRITISH DEREE COLLEGE SYLLABUS FOR: Instruction hours/lab hours/ US credits 3/0/3 EN 4477 TRENDS IN CONTEMPORARY BRITISH CULTURE – UK LEVEL 6 UK CREDITS: 15 (new course) PRE REQUISITES: WP 1010 Introduction to Academic Writing WP 1111 Integrated Academic Writing and Ethics WP 1212 Academic Writing and Research EN 3321 English Literature: From Romanticism to Modernism CATALOG Detailed study of representative trends in British culture which seek to DESCRIPTION: reconceptualize Britishness, nationhood and belonging in the last 50 years (post-1960s to the present). Emphasis on the trends evident in cultural representations of contemporary Britishness, in a variety of media, such as film and theatre, as well as popular culture and entertainment. RATIONALE: This course explores the ways British identity has changed in the wake of decolonialization, globalism, and terrorism. Students will investigate textual production (literary, cinematic, dramatic, digital, etc.) which poses a challenge to established artistic modes, so-called British values and national identities in the last fifty years. Within a context of major cultural and sociopolitical transitions which have produced a more ethnically diverse context as well as more racism and xenophobia, the course examines competing discourses around notions of national identity resulting in polyphony in representations of self and other. Traditional views of nation and Englishness are juxtaposed to attitudes which suggest a polyvalent and multicultural Britishness. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1.Analyze the characteristics of post-1960s British contemporaneity and trace the emergence of a post-war sensibility and its influence on contemporary literature, art and culture; 2. Explore the characteristics of contemporary texts and conduct research on aspects of the texts examined; 3. Discuss the contemporary reaction to traditional literary and cultural structures and concepts; 4. Identify and discuss experimentation in artistic forms through close textual reading of representative contemporary British texts (literary, filmic, dramatic, digital, etc.); 5. Relate and compare the contribution of individual artists and works to the development of themes and techniques typical of contemporary British culture. METHOD OF TEACHING AND In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the LEARNING: following tools are used: 1. Lectures, class discussions, workshop-style pair work and group work during class meetings; 2. Formative exercises and online learning tasks through the Blackboard online tools designed to help students acquire confidence and benefit from independent study; 3. Additional print and audiovisual educational material posted on the Blackboard course template; 4. Timely instructor feedback on assignments; 5. Other relevant educational material placed on reserve in the library; 6. Individualized assistance during office hours for further discussion of lecture material, additional reading, assignments and examinations; 7. Close collaboration with the Library and SASS to encourage students’ effective use of academic support services; 8. Discussion of disciplinary research methods and tools to facilitate the completion of assigned research projects. ASSESSMENT: Summative: Two -part Examination Part I (1-hour; in-class): explication of two works; 30% Part II (1,000-1,500 words): take-home Essay; choice of topics offered Researc h Project (3,000-3,500 words) Analysis of author(s) and work(s) developed 70% through close reading and 6-8 critical sources; choice of topics Formative: Essay drafts, research activities, and all other in- 0 class and out-of-class assignments in preparation for the examination and the research project The formative coursework prepares students for successful completion of the summative coursework. Peter Singer, in his book, Ethics simply states that 'Ethics is about how we ought to live.' (P-3) Graham Swift (born in 1949) is an English novelist whose work is tinged with contemporary ethical issues. He creates situations in which his characters look for better ways to relate to and with each other. These characters try to understand themselves, their place in a world that baffles them, and their relations to others. In this paper we will try to illustrate and discuss the various methods Swift’s characters adopt to wrestle with and at the same time address their contemporary problems. We will trace their problems back to modernity and its adoption of a philosophy or a system of thought that was purely rational and therefore uneven and incomplete. We will consider Swift’s work in general as postmodern with subjects and concerns reflecting some of the contemporary ethical and critical debates. We will also perceive and present Swift’s work as a response to the inadequacy of modernity and an attempt to come to terms with its shortcomings in the hope of an improved and wiser modernity.

    monograf Edebiyat Eleştirisi Dergisi ISSN 2148-3442 2021/15: (94-113) Masculinity in Crisis: Graham Swift’s Last Orders*2 ** Baysar Taniyan 3 Abstract Graham Swift’s Last Orders (1996) covers the story of a one-day trip of four men from London to Margate to scatter the ashes of a deceased friend to the sea. The narrative is presented in monologue chapters in which multiple narrators, in a confessional tone, introduce their histories, recollections and memories sparked by this death. Almost all of the narrators are fathers and the stories they relate are either about their children or their fathers. Within these narrations, fathers become the symbols of tradition, history, authority and stability. The following generation, on the other hand, symbolizes change, future, individualism and mobility. While these discrepancies introduce a certain level of tension, the cri- sis that masculinity faced, as in the changing role of fatherhood, in the last dec- ade of the twentieth century becomes another source of the conflict in the novel. This conflict is heightened by the narrator fathers who, by looking back at their fathers in the past, try to continue the old forms of masculinities. The aim of this study is, then, to analyse this conflict and crisis in the novel caused by the ever- changing forms of masculinities and to locate it within a certain socio-economic and cultural frame. A thorough analysis of the male characters of the novel may contribute to the overall understanding of masculinities. Novels are important objects of research as they provide instances to explore the construction of mas- culinities.

    Willis 1 A Carnivalesque Perspective of Graham Swift's Last Orders Graham’s Swift’s Last Orders (1996) typically has been viewed by such critics as Lewis MacLeod and Jodi Kanter as a novel about loss, grief, collectivity, reconciliation, and regeneration, as the characters embark on a tumultuous, one-day journey to Margate on April 2, 1990 to dispose of their friend Jack’s ashes.1 As Ray, Vince, Lenny and Vic begin their journey to Margate, the atmosphere is contentious because of the characters and their complicated, collective histories. For instance, Lenny has taken issue with Vince because, years earlier, Vince impregnated his daughter and then abandoned her to join the military. Ray, on the other hand, feels a tremendous amount of guilt because he has kept money that Vince lent Jack and that Jack in turn lent Ray.2 Ray not only feels guilt for his betrayal of Vince, but also for deceiving Jack by having an affair with Amy. In spite of the contention and the disruption that the characters’ histories create, they are ultimately able to reconcile their differences, while also fulfilling Jack’s last orders by disposing his ashes in Margate. The pattern of disruption and reconciliation in the characters’ journey, and the grotesque adventures along the way, evoke Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of carnival and the carnivalesque. In Rabelais and His World, Bakhtin claims that carnival temporarily pulls individuals out of ordinary life by disrupting the official order and its conventions. While the official order is disrupted, people are released from standards of etiquette and of decency, and they are free to engage in what Bakhtin calls the “grotesque.” Last Orders begins with Ray declaring that “It aint like your regular sort of day” (1), and “it aint official business, it’s different” (3).
