Programme and Newsletter August-November 2012 Chairman’s Note’s

Further to my note in the last programme concerning the forthcoming vacancy for a new Membership Secretary, I am delighted to report that Diane Biggadike has volunteered to fill the post. Diane will take over at the next AGM.

Don’t forget to book your seat for the coach trip on Tuesday, 28th August. This time we are off to Canterbury. There will be an 8 mile walk ending back in the city or, if preferred, a one mile walk direct to the city centre. Pick-up points are shown in the programme. The cost is £12 pp.

An Ode to the Back Marker

When out walking how many people give a thought to that solitary person at the rear of the group. I refer, of course, to the back marker.

As Shakespeare might have said,

Tis awfully lonely at the back The group to follow on winding track Off go the leaders, the pace so fast Alright for them, there’re not last

Page 1

Which way to go, what path to take One can’t see round corners, a decision to make Blowing on whistle that nobody hears Shouting out loud helps to calm ones fears

A solitary life and that’s for sure Rounding up strays like a guide on tour Move to front and risk a glare Best stay behind - don’t take the dare

To be serious, it can be a strain for the BM if people fail to keep up with the main group. in particular, with its many attractions and distractions, can be very trying. So please, when we are out and about, do try to keep in visual touch with those in front and don’t wander off.

AGM

Our AGM this year will be held in Dereham Hall which is behind Library on the 7th November at 7.30 pm. There is a form for proposing the new committee members in the back of this programme.

Footpath Maintenance Working Party We are hoping to continue with this work during the summer and autumn months on Fridays, starting at 9.45am. Provisional dates are July 13th, August 10th, September 14th, October19th and November 16th. On July 13th the plan is to work on footpaths near The Grove in Upminster. Further details will be available in July. It would be very helpful if Ramblers would let me know of footpaths in our area where they feel work needs to be done.

Christmas Lunch

We are planning to hold our Christmas lunch this year on the 18th December, at ‘The Olde Plough’ in Bulphan. A booking form will be included with the next programme. Please contact Peter O’Neill if you have any queries. The estimated cost is £21.

The closing date for the next programme is the 24th October 2012

As we plan to start to compile the December to March programme as soon as the August programme is issued it would be much appreciated if you could supply your walks as soon possible especially if you require a specific date. Our drop dead date is the 24th October but please remember the later you leave it the likelihood the dates that you require will be more restricted. This date is a week earlier than normal to accommodate the menu details of the Christmas lunch.

If you would like to lead a walk on the next programme, please contact the relevant under mentioned person: To lead a walk on Tuesday, contact Peter O’Neill on 01708 455626 To lead a walk on Saturday, contact Peter Rees on 01708 445177 or [email protected] To lead a walk on Sunday, contact Peter Rees at [email protected]

Web Site

If you would like to receive your programme by e-mail instead of a paper copy please contact Peter Owen on [email protected]. By obtaining your copy in this way it will save us printing and postage costs. The programme is the largest outlay from our funds. A programme will, of course, still be printed but we are hoping to be able to cut down the number being run off. However, if you decide after a trial of receiving the programme via e-mail, that you would rather revert to the printed copy please just send another e-mail to Peter Owen at the above e-mail address and you will then be sent paper copies. All members with e-mail access are urged to try the new system.

All walks

If the weather is inclement, it is important to either check our web site as noted on page 1or contact the leader to see if the walk will take place.

Please check for the availability of public transport on the TFL web site, before travelling at weekends to allow for the planning of alternative routes.

Car share

Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited.

Curry Evening

Curry night is Thursday 4th October 7.30 at the Railway Hotel, at 7.30pm. The curry is optional as the full Ember Inn menu is available. The venue is next to Hornchurch Station, buses 252, 193, and 256 also pass the door. Further details can be obtained from Tony Hyde on 01708 551470.

Walking with the Ramblers

‘All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accident will occasionally occur. It is therefore important that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to occur’. The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in and Wales. Company registration number 445892. Registered charity in England and Wales Number 1093577. Registered office, 2 Floor, Camleford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment London SE1 7TW.

New Walks and Walk Leaders Required.

The committee would like to thank all the volunteer walks leaders who have enabled us to provide wide variety of walks that are available to the group each week. We must all remember that these people give freely of their time to investigate, plan and lead our walks. Having said that, the walks co- ordinators are always seeking new ideas and people who would like to lead a walk. This may appear a daunting prospect at first but rest assured help is always available to either turn your idea into a walk, or support you in leading it.

If you feel you have something to offer please contact your walks co- ordinator, or a committee member, who will be only too pleased to advise you.

Please remember that the walks programme is dependent on volunteers if no one volunteers to lead walks there will be no walks programme and therefore no walks for anyone to participate in!

Page 18 Ramblers Holidays Walking Partnership

The Havering and East London Ramblers group has recently joined The Walking Partnership. This new partnership, supported by Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays has given many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our group can benefit directly.

Ramblers Worldwide Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader, so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like minded people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut mountain treks. Take a look at their website on www.ramblersholidays.co.uk or give them a call on 01707 33113 for more details or to order a brochure.

Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra funding could really make a difference to us
