ULTIMATE SPECTATORS GUIDE TO THE LONDON MARATHON We recommend you purchase a Travelcard to travel around London on the day as this will allow access to Rail, Tube and Bus at no extra charge. Zones 1-2 should be adequate for the travelling around the route, however if you need to go further afield, please check which zones you’ll be travelling in. Buses no longer accept cash payments. You’ll need to use a Travelcard, Oyster card or pay with a contactless debit/credit card. Please note that whilst we do have cheering stations at Tower Bridge (mile 12) and along the Victoria Embankment (mile 24) these will be manned by volunteers and we do not recommend you go to those points on race day. This is because these areas are extremely busy and it can take a long time to move through the crowds. By skipping Tower Bridge, you have more chance of seeing your runner at multiple points on the route, and by going straight to mile 25 from 19 you’ll cheer them on from the end! START AREA Although it’s advised not to accompany your runner to the start due to the high volumes of people, if you decide to see them off, please be aware that spectators will not be allowed into the assembly areas of the start. Once you’ve said your farewells and good lucks, head down the Avenue out of Greenwich Park. Once out of the park, turn left onto Nevada Street and keep walking as it turns into Burney Street. At the end of the road, turn right onto Royal Hill, and then left onto Greenwich High Road once you reach the end. Keep walking down Greenwich High Road until you reach Greenwich Station on your right. Assembly Area Here you’ll want to get onto the DLR, northbound, to Canary Wharf. At Canary Wharf, you can either join our third cheering station at mile 19, or you can change onto the Jubilee line and join our first cheering station at mile 9. You’ll have time to see your runner at both. Please note, you can get on any DLR train from Greenwich, the end destination does not matter. At Canary Wharf, to get to Canada Water, head westbound in the direction of Stanmore. MILE 9 – CANADA WATER Our first cheering point will be at Mile 9 along Surrey Quays Road. When leaving Canada Water Station, turn left onto Surrey Quays Road and follow the road until you reach the race route. Our cheering station will be located along the route. Once you’ve cheered your runner on, walk back to Canada Water Tube Station to go to the third cheering point at mile 19 (we don’t recommend going to the second point at Tower Bridge due to crowd levels). Teenage Cancer Trust Mile 9 Cheering Squad MILE 19 – CANARY WHARF At Canada Water, get on the Jubilee line westbound in the direction of Stratford. Get off at Canary Wharf which is the next stop. When coming out of Canary Wharf station, try to come out the main entrance, up the big escalators which will bring you out onto Jubilee Plaza, directly facing the water way and a Boris Bike Station. Turn right, towards the plaza, and then right again so that you’re walking past the station, with the station garden on your right. Keep going until you reach Upper Bank Street. If you come out the secondary exit, you will be on Upper Bank Street, simply turn left and walk up Upper Bank Street until you reach the North Colonnade, and the race route. Walk right along the route until you get to our cheer point. Please note that it will be extremely busy at Canary Wharf so our cheering squad may be a little further along than depicted on the map. Teenage Cancer Trust Cheer Point Canary Wharf Main Exit Canary Wharf Secondary Exit MILE 25 AND COOL DOWN PARTY Walk back towards Canary Wharf Station and get on the Jubilee line, westbound, in the direction of Stanmore. Travel 6 stops and get off at Westminster. Exit from Exit 3 (Houses of Parliament) and follow the route in the direction of the runners (heading away from Westminster Bridge) the runners should be on your right hand side, if not, use the underpass to cross to the other side. Head straight over Parliament Square, following the route. On the corner of Parliament Square and Great George Street is the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This is where the final cheering squad and the Teenage Cancer Trust Cool Down Party will be. Teenage Cancer Trust Mile 25.5 Cheering Squad Westminster Station Exit 3 RICS - Teenage Cancer Trust Cool Down Party Mile 25.5 Cheering Squad WHAT TO DO IF WESTMINSTER TUBE STATION IS CLOSED DUE TO OVERCROWDING As you can imagine, Westminster can get incredibly busy on race day, and sometimes Westminster tube station is closed for short periods of time due to overcrowding. If the station is closed at the time you’re travelling, you can get off at either Waterloo or Green Park stations. Please note that it will be extremely congested on the walk from Green Park to the Cool Down Party as this is the last mile of the route. We would recommend you exit at Waterloo Station. TO EXIT AT WATERLOO STATION Head to the main forecourt by following the signs to the trains. If you exit the Jubilee line where McDonalds is, head up the escalators to enter the main forecourt. Facing the platforms, walk right, towards platform 18. Head out of the main exit and walk down the steps. Turn left at the bottom of the steps, and turn left again so you’re walking down York Road. Keep walking until you reach Westminster Bridge. Cross the bridge on the left hand side, so that when you reach Westminster station, the runners are on your right. Follow the route in the direction of the runners (heading away from Westminster Bridge) and head straight over Parliament Square, following the route. On the corner of Parliament Square and Great George Street is the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This is where the final cheering squad and the Teenage Cancer Trust Cool Down Party will be. TO EXIT AT GREEN PARK STATION To exit at Green Park Station, exit from any exit and cross over to the park. Walk through the park towards Buckingham Palace. Here you will join the route. Walk in the opposite direction to the flow of runners, with the runners on your left, and follow the route round to Birdcage Walk. Walk all the way down Birdcage Walk until you reach Parliament Square. On the corner of Parliament Square and Great George Street is the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This is where the final cheering squad and the Teenage Cancer Trust Cool Down Party will be.
