His status is due, in part, to the championing of his music by Ameri- can conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein (1918!–!1990). Last year (2010) was the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth; this year (2011), we commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death on May 18. The study of Mahler!—!the man and his music!—!confronts us not only with the unique qualities of his artistic vision and accomplishments but also with one of the most fertile and creative periods and places in Western cultural history: fin-de-siècle Vienna. Mahler’s life and times close the door on the nineteenth century. The program takes place on Friday, November 4, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and Saturday, November 5, from 10am to 4pm, at Marines’ Memorial Theatre, located at 609 Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco. Tickets for Vienna on the Verge (1890-1918), are priced as follows: Single tickets for individual Friday programs are $60 orchestra and $45 balcony and individual Saturday programs are $80 orchestra and $55 balcony, single tickets for both days of each program are $125 orchestra and $90 balcony. Artists of such caliber as Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg flocked to this enticing city at the turn of the twentieth century. Alma Mahler was a strong woman and a product of her time. Other women wanted her in their circle of friends and men desired her. The list of her acquaintances, friends, and lovers includes some of the most brilliant artists of the twentieth century.
