The entry for Dursley and Berkeley, which also covered Cambridge, Uley and Newport, gave a comprehensive listing of the many trades people in the area together with a good gazetteer of what the town was like at that time. The entry for Dursley and Berkeley is found on pages 105-116. This transcription was carried out by Andrew Barton of Dursley in 2005. All punctuation and spelling of the original is retained. In addition the basic layout of the original work has been kept, although page breaks are likely to have fallen in different places. -

REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2017-18 The Annual Report of Cotswold District Council COTSWOLD DISTRICT COUNCIL Welcome to Cotswold District Council’s Review of the Year for 2017-18 We have had yet another good year in 2017/18, addressing a wide range of top tasks and also achieving planned savings of over £200,000. Our success stems in part from our partnership (within the Publica Group) - with three other councils - West Oxfordshire, Forest of Dean and Cheltenham. Through working within this partnership, we managed to freeze our portion of the Council Tax bill for 2017/18 at a time when the vast majority of authorities increased costs. Previously we froze our share in 2016/17, reduced it by 5% in 2015/16, reduced it by 3% in 2014/15 and by 5% in 2013/14 . The freeze for 2017/18 meant that the actual amount being charged was lower than the figure ten years ago. In other words, the typical payment for a resident in a Band D property would have seen a real terms cut of 25% over the last six years. We have also frozen charges for car parking and garden waste collections. We can also report further progress on several flood alleviation projects in the Cotswold district. Additionally, we delivered 247 affordable homes during 2017/18, comfortably ahead of our goal of delivering a minimum of 150 homes. Thanks to the efforts of our residents we continue to achieve the highest levels of recycling in Gloucestershire (almost 60%% of all household waste is recycled, reused or composted). -

GFirst LEP Business Groups Update: August 2020 The following Business groups met ‘virtually’ in August 2020: Business Membership groups | Visitor Economy & Tourism • The Business Group Chairs met virtually on Monday 29th June. GFirst LEP’s CEO, David Owen gave an update on the activities of the LEP including the Economic Recovery Plan for Gloucestershire, responses to the Growth Hub’s Business Intelligence Survey and outbound business calls to the largest 200 businesses in the county. The update also included various collaboration activities: partnering with Glosjobs.co.uk, and supporting Punchline with their Business Champions feature. • Nine of the ten business group Chairs were present at the meeting, and each gave an update on the current state of affairs in their sector. The main areas of concern following COVID-19 were: o a reduction of up to 40% in the demand from civil aerospace industry o Unemployment and re-training will be major issues over the next 3-12 months as businesses fail to recover o The cyber and digital industry is stronger than ever before, and is relevant to all sectors • David Owen thanked the Chairs for their support in the development of the Economic Recovery Plan. The LEP and its business ‘voice’ is all the more richer with a diverse, knowledgeable support network, and by feeding this knowledge into the economic recovery plan, we have created a business-rich report which will compliment the place-based recovery plans being produced by the local authorities and will collectively support Gloucestershire to move forward. The date of the next Business Group Chairs Meeting will be early September 2020 date to be confirmed. -

Would you like to live and work in England? The NHS is looking for GPs to work in Gloucestershire NHS England Gateway reference: INTRODUCTION The National Health Service in England is running an international recruitment campaign for family doctors. In England these are called General Practitioners or GPs. We plan to recruit around 2,000 GPs from overseas by 2020. They will work alongside GPs we train in England to develop an exciting range of health services away from hospitals and in local community settings. This brochure explains the importance of GPs in providing healthcare to our population. It tells you about the application process and what to expect when you apply. We are recruiting GPs for many areas across England. This brochure gives you an idea of the benefits and opportunities available to you if you choose to work in Gloucestershire. WHY WORK AS A GP IN ENGLAND? GPs in England are the foundation of the NHS. They are usually the first person a patient turns to for help and they deal with a whole range of health problems. They are general experts in the whole field of medicine for adults and children. They manage the healthcare of all their patients, including acute illness, long term conditions and mental health problems. GPs usually work in practices, often leading teams which include nurses, healthcare assistants, practice managers, receptionists and other staff. Practices also work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as health visitors, midwives, pharmacists, physiotherapists, mental health services and social care services. GPs provide continuing medical care for patients in the community or they will refer patients to hospital clinics for further assessment or treatment by specialists. -
