INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand marking: or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

1 COPYRIGHT © CENTRAL TEXAS BLUEGRASS ASSOCIATION IBMA Member Central Vol. 33 No. 5 Texas Bluegrass May 1, 2011 Copyright © 2011 by Central Texas Bluegrass Association A Mournful Sound is Blowing Through Texas It was quite a shock to learn of the sudden and tragic death of Jake Jenkins, a native Texan and accomplished songwriter and banjo player for the “Karl Shiflett and Big Country Show” band be- tween 1993 and 2003. Jake (age 40) and his parents Dan and Dorothy Jenkins were killed early Sunday morning on March 27, 2011 when the small, single-engine vin- tage plane Jake was piloting crashed near his private air strip in rural Dickens County. I had the pleasure of meeting Jake and his young son Eli a year ago when CTBA brought Jake out of retirement--albeit briefly--to do a blue- grass show at Rice- Grass: An Old Timey and Bluegrass festival in Fischer, Texas on March 28, 2010. I remember making a cold call to Jake at his home in Dickens, Texas (near Lubbock) a few weeks prior to the festival to see if we could lure him away from his professional firefighting career in Lubbock, which he had begun in 2005 in order to be closer to his family. It wasn’t that hard to convince him--you could just tell he had music in his bones and was chomping at the bit to get back on stage. Jake enthusiastically agreed even though he claimed to be pretty “rusty” on the banjo. Although he had been playing occasionally with the Hicko- ry Hill Band, we invited Jake to come and perform at Ricegrass with an all-star cast of local musicians that we knew were sure to impress--Dennis McDaniel on mandolin, Chojo Jacques on fiddle, Tom Ellis on bass, and Jeff Robertson on guitar/vocals.

All Rights Reserved Abstract THE CARTER FAMILY AND HAZEL & ALICE: A COMPARISON OF MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND CHANGING GENDER NORMS (DECEMBER 2016) Laiken Boyd B.A., Glenville State College M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Dave H. Wood This thesis explores, in detail, the lives and musical careers of The Carter Family (A.P., Sara, and Maybelle) in comparison with those of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. These are two trailblazing musical groups of the country and bluegrass music industries. This thesis discusses the effect of these women’s accomplishments on the country music and bluegrass industries when taking into consideration the obstacles society presented them with in the form of gender norms. Using the social constructs of gender norms during the 1920s-1970s as a lens for discussing some of the obstacles these women faced in their careers (e.g., restrictions/hindrance). This work will attempt to address what the gender norms of the time period were, if the fact that they were women presented any significant obstacles for their careers, and why these women received the recognition that they did.

Not to be quoted without attribution or published without permission. There has been a lot more written about bluegrass instrumental techniques than there has about vocals. That seems odd, because bluegrass performances and recordings almost always feature the human voice. A few concepts will help you to better understand and appreciate bluegrass singing. This short article will cover solo vocal styles, commonly used bluegrass harmonies, and suggested resources for listening. History And Overview Bill Monroe was the first bluegrass singer, but bluegrass wasn’t the first music he sang. Like many youngsters in the rural South, Monroe attended singing schools led by traveling music teachers. There he learned a simplified “shape-note” system of musical notation that had evolved from the one used in The Sacred Harp (1844), one of several early shape-note hymnbooks spawned by the Second Great Awakening and published during the 19th century. When you hear people singing “fa-so-la-mi” syllables the first time through a gospel number, you’ll know you’re listening to shape- note singing. Monroe also heard unaccompanied ballads, some of them tracing to the British Isles and the Elizabethan era. Before people had newspapers, radio, or TV, they conveyed news and tragic or touching events through song. Parents commonly used ballads and hymns to quiet, amuse, or teach their young children – and to help pass the time while engaged in their work.
