The Association of Canada Newsletter-Volume 2 Issue 2-April 2008

In an attempt to provide our membership with some additional benefit for their annual membership fee, the BMACC Board decided that we would hold regular draws for various items such as event tickets. In April, the Thames Valley Bluegrass Association donated two tickets for the May 3rd Concert at the Centennial Hall in London. The draw was held on April 3rd at our regular Thursday night Jam Session.

AND THE WINNER IS! James Young, 2237 Cameron Line, R.R. #3, Indian River, Ontario The winning ticket was drawn by Rikki Cameron of Woodstock, a new youth member of TVBA.

A Matter of Trust trouble, personal insult or professional reputation sullying. The professional practices that are widely adopted by successful bluegrass associations include holding open meetings, following Robert's Rules of Order, publishing meeting minutes and financial statements, adopting an association "Ethics Policy" or "Code of Conduct" (and in the bluegrass world, adopting a "Jam Etiquette" policy for association-hosted events).

Finally, a successful bluegrass association will host many public events to which all members, as well Three Fox Drive as the general public, are invited. Of course, there is a place for "private, invitation-only jams". But the leaders of a bluegrass association need to be cautious about hosting more private jams than public ones, for that damages the trust that the membership has in them, and they risk developing a TVBARhonda reputation of simply being a clique". If a bluegrass Vincent ticket association develops a reputation of just being a winners. clique, it really erodes trust and the organization is doomed. Deerhurst Nov/07

Volunteering for a bluegrass association can be a fantastically fun and rewarding experience. In our modem world where it's increasingly hard to find the time---or the front porch! ---on which to sit around picking, singing and dancing, joining a bluegrass association can fill that empty space inside us. We can experience the musical and social traditions that kept our ancestors strong, and we can have a whole lot of fun! But, for most folks, it takes a big swallow of trust before they're ready to jump in and sing that song or play that solo or serve on that committee. Bluegrass associations need to work hard to build---and keep---that trust.

At the risk of being accused of tooting TVBA's horn unduly, I want to comment on a couple of initiatives that we are using to encourage young people to participate in Bluegrass Music.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. On my first trip to Bean Blossom I was completely blown away by the number of young people playing instruments and singing-and doing it expertly. We need to find a way to foster that same kind of interest in Canadian youth.

The Thames Valley Bluegrass Association started the ball rolling with the Ontario Initiative by distributing the "Discover Bluegrass - Bluegrass in the Schools" DVD's to school boards and other educational facilities. This is a DVD produced by IBMA exploring North American Roots Music. Over the past couple of years we have managed to spread them pretty well across Ontario now.

One other tactic we use is to encourage families to come out to our regular Thursday night jams and bring the kids. We have a growing number of families now attending. One Thursday each month we have a "Slow Jam" in a separate room to allow beginners to play simple tunes slowly enough to enable them to get all the notes and thus become more familiar with their instruments. You will note from the photos that we 're not all kids participating in these jams. Gord Devries leads the jam by playing a solid and singing the melody on tunes like "You Are My Sunshine". The rest ofus do our best to hit all the notes in the song. I will say the kids are coming along a bit quicker than the adults.

This is a great way to get young people involved in something that they and their parents can do together. It is truly a family oriented activity.

This is a very enjoyable way to spend a Thursday evening. Many thanks to Jane Uncer, Program Chair, for setting up the various activities every month.
