The Centrality of Telenovelas in Latin America's
The centrality of telenovelas in Latin America’s everyday life: Past tendencies, current knowledge, and future research Antonio C. La Pastina Texas A&M University [email protected] Cacilda M. Straubhaar University of Texas at Austin [email protected] Every evening, millions of viewers throughout Latin America tune in their television sets to watch telenovelas. For more than thirty years now telenovelas have dominated primetime programming on most of the region’s television. And here Latin America refers to more than a geographic area: it covers a culturally constructed region that goes from the southern tip of South America to the United States, where one can watch daily telenovelas on the two Hispanic networks, Univision and Telemundo,[i] and Canada. In the last few decades Brazilian and Mexican telenovelas, and to a lesser extent Venezuelan, Colombian, Argentineans and others, have been exported to more than a hundred nations around the world (Melo, 1988). In this increasingly international scenario, Latin American telenovelas have been aired in other Portuguese and Spanish speaking markets, and in dubbed and sometimes edited versions in many different national contexts (Allen, 1995; McAnany, 1984; Melo, 1988; Sinclair, 1996; Straubhaar, 1996). This international presence has challenged the traditional debate of cultural imperialism and North-South flow of media products (Sinclair, 1996; Wilkinson, 1995). Telenovelas’ popularity has lead to its increased scrutiny among scholars and the media industry, and yet it seems that not everyone is talking about the same thing. A number of arguments start with the contention that Latin American telenovela is a mere showcase for “bourgeois society” with the pernicious effect of mitigating – through the illusion of abundance – the unfulfilled material aspirations of its audience, all the while legitimating a way of life that takes consumerism to the extreme (Oliveira, 1993). -

Dr. Kenneth Kreitner, Ph.D. This paper explores the Colombian nationalistic musical movement, which was born as a search for identity that various composers undertook in order to discover the roots of Colombian musical folklore. These roots, while distinct, have all played a significant part in the formation of the culture that gave birth to a unified national identity. It is this identity that acts as a recurring motif throughout the works of the four composers mentioned in this study, each representing a different stage of the nationalistic movement according to their respective generations, backgrounds, and ideological postures. The idea of universalism and the integration of a national identity into the sphere of the Western musical tradition is a dilemma that has caused internal struggle and strife among generations of musicians and artists in general. This paper strives to open a new path in the research of nationalistic music for violin and piano through the analyses of four works written for this type of chamber ensemble: the third movement of the Sonata Op. 7 No.1 for Violin and Piano by Guillermo Uribe Holguín; Lopeziana, piece for Violin and Piano by Adolfo Mejía; Sonata for Violin and Piano No.3 by Luís Antonio Escobar; and Dúo rapsódico con aires de currulao for Violin and Piano by Andrés Posada. -

MAYO 2017 2 Resumen En el presente documento se realiza una indagación y análisis de dos expresiones culturales de Cuba y Colombia, la rumba cubana y el bullerengue. Se busca desde un principio obtener conocimientos acerca del contexto y las características de cada género, explorando aspectos sociales, y principalmente enfocándose en la música y su expresión a través de las voces y percusión. Se realiza también un análisis musical comparando cada género y sus vertientes, tomando como elementos de estudio diferentes piezas musicales de cada tradición y transcripciones de entrevistas con intérpretes de dichas tradiciones. En el análisis se demuestran similitudes entre los ritmos característicos de cada género, la manera cómo se comporta el instrumento improvisador y cómo interactúa con las voces. Por último, se aplican los conocimientos adquiridos en la creación de una pieza musical integrando las dos tradiciones. La investigación tiene como finalidad medir las similitudes entre la rumba cubana y el bullerengue, y demostrar cómo se les puede aplicar en la construcción de una pieza musical nueva. Afro-Caribbean Vodou, Serving the Spirits Vodou, Serving the Spirits Summary: Vodou (meaning "spirit" or "god" in the Fon and Ewe languages of West Africa) is a blending (syncretism) of African religious traditions and Catholicism. In the United States, Vodou religious ceremonies are often performed in private group settings where spirits manifest in devotees through posession. The term "Vodou" derives from a word meaning “spirit” or “god” in the Fon and Ewe languages of West Africa. It has come to be used as the name for the religious traditions of Haiti, which blend Fon, Kongo, and Yoruba African religions with French Catholicism. However, while Haitians themselves speak more often of “serving the spirits,” today they also use the term Vodou. Since the late 1950s, with the Haitian immigrant and refugee population increasing in the United States, these traditions of “serving the spirits” have become part of the American religious landscape. By the late 18th century, the Caribbean island of St. Domingue, or Hispaniola, of which Haiti occupies the western third, had already received considerably more African captives than Cuba or the United States would receive throughout their participation in the slave trade. Nearly half of the laborers who worked the island’s sugar plantations came from West and Central Africa. After the Haitian revolution made Haiti an independent nation in 1804, the influx of African slaves was cut off, but the large Haitian citizenry of African descent continued to develop elaborate African-inspired traditions. The Vodou gods or spirits, called lwa, are grouped into several “nations,” linked to areas and peoples in Africa. -

From Criminal to Citizen: How The Evolution of Public Opinion Won Gay Marriage In The Courtroom Sabrina Singer Senior Thesis Department of History Barnard College, Columbia University Advisor: Robert McCaughey Singer 1 Prologue A warm tropical breeze brushed my face as I stood in the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens waiting for the mayor to begin. The crowd murmured with excitement, looking around at each other with anticipation as the sun set behind the palm trees. I glanced over at the couple I had met earlier in the evening. They were dressed in matching tuxedos, holding hands, waiting. The drag queen next to me shifted her weight back and forth, impatient. Then, finally, the speeches were over and the ceremonies could begin. The judge had only lifted the stay on gay marriage in the early hours of the morning, yet hundreds of gay couples lined-up to walk down the makeshift aisle to the hastily constructed altar to be married by the mayor. Dressed in suits, biking clothes, jean shorts, and bathing suits, couple after couple affirmed their love and commitment. Same-sex marriage had come to Florida. I had witnessed similar jubilation in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building two summers prior when the Court issued its momentous ruling in United States vs. Windsor, overturning the Defense of Marriage Act that had prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage. Beholding the relief and joy on the faces of the people swarming the steps of the Supreme Court building, I knew that I had chosen the right issue to believe in. -

CAPÍTULO 1 MARCO REFERENCIAL “‘Gutierritos’ despertó el interés masivo y también la interrogante: ¿acaso las telenovelas sólo sirven para provocar el llanto del auditorio” Mauricio Peña. 1.1 Antecedentes de la Telenovela Molina y Carvajal (1999:2), en su artículo “Trayectoria de la telenovela Latinoamericana” nos señalan que el género telenovela tuvo sus antecedentes en 1790 en Francia e Inglaterra con las representaciones populares, tomadas de las formas y modos de los espectáculos de ferias, donde el tema a escenificar dependía de la literatura oral de la región, en los que destacan cuentos de miedo, misterio y relatos de terror. A mediados del siglo XIX, nació un nuevo medio de comunicación dirigido a las masas, el folletín, el cual, sirve de modelo para la realización de telenovelas. Villanueva, M., en su artículo “El melodrama, la telenovela en América y su nacimiento en México” (2000:1), apunta que: “este género literario de origen francés, se inició con la publicación en el diario Le siècle de la traducción —como pliego suelto— de El lazarillo de Tormes. Los principales exponentes de esta forma narrativa fueron, entre otros, Eugene Sue, Dumas (padre), Dickens y Balzac. Las historias rebosaban intriga, romance y suspenso, lo que atrapaba el interés de los lectores, que las seguían diariamente para conocer el final” Lataban (1995:8) en su Tesis Consumo de telenovelas por estudiantes de universidades privadas señala que dentro de sus fases, encontramos la función ideológica, la cual presentaba una novela donde “triunfaban el sentido común, los buenos pensamientos, el orden y la moral”, dejando atrás la constante vigilancia de la sociedad y convirtiéndose en una fantasía de ésta. -

It was evident that they had made very rapid improvement, and we noticed with pleasure how bright and eager to learn many of them seemed... ... Te first day at school was rather trying. Most of my children were very small, and consequently restless. Some were too young to learn the alphabet. Tese little ones were brought to school because the older children — in whose care their parents leave them while at work — could not come without them. We were therefore willing to have them come, although they seemed to have discovered the secret of perpetual motion, and tried one’s patience sadly. But after some days of positive, though not severe treatment, order was brought out of chaos, and I found but little difficulty in managing and quieting the tiniest and most restless spirits. I never before saw children so eager to learn, although I had had several years’ experience in New England schools. Coming to school is a constant delight and recreation to them. Tey come here as other children go to play. Te older ones, during the summer, work in the fields from early morning until eleven or twelve o’clock, and then come into school, after their hard toil in the hot sun, as bright and as anxious to learn as ever. Of course there are some stupid ones, but these are the minority. Te majority learn with wonderful rapidity.
