    Catholic Martyrs of Gloucestershire by Michael Bergin and Margaret and Patrick Gethen St Peter's Church, Gloucester Acknowledgements In November 1987, to commemorate the beatification of five Gloucestershire Catholic martyrs, the Gloucestershire Catholic History Society published a booklet written by Patrick and Margaret Gethen. This recounted what is known of Blessed Richard Sargeant, John Sandys, Stephen Rowsham, William Lampley and Henry Webley. The booklet was republished in 2005. Journal No 53 of the Gloucestershire Catholic History Society, published in October 2010, reproduced the original 1987 booklet with the addition of articles by Michael Bergen on Blessed Thomas Alfield and the Venerable Thomas Webley.     Chapter 1 Reading Oprah o, three women walk into a bookstore. An Oprah’s Book Club Sdisplay dominates the space just to the right of the entrance. The first woman glances at it dismissively and moves past it to the New Fiction section where she spends an hour leafing through hard- covers before heading for the corner where they keep Literature. The second woman, steering toward New Paperbacks, pauses at the Oprah books to read the back covers of a novel or two. She picks one up and carries it with her as she wanders through the bookstore. The third woman looks relieved to find the Oprah books right there as she walks in. She grabs the latest selection and turns straight toward the cash register.1 As I have talked with many readers about Oprah’s Book Club since 1998, I have found these responses typical. The first woman, a careful and confident reader, well educated and well read, regards Oprah books as supermarket fiction. She is less likely to pick up a novel if it’s an Oprah’s Book Club selection, even if it’s written by a respected author she might otherwise read—Joyce Carol Oates or Barbara Kingsolver, for example. The second woman, also a good reader, though not so confi- dent a critic, is a little overwhelmed by all the choices in today’s mega- bookstores. She willingly takes recommendations from friends, book reviewers in her favorite magazines, or online discussions. She trusts Oprah’s choices, generally, though she sometimes finds the novels de- pressing.

The Gloria is sung (said) on Sundays (outside Advent and Lent), on solemnities and on feasts, during the octaves of Christmas and Easter and at special solemn celebrations. 2 There is only ever one Collect, Prayer over the Gifts, and Prayer after Communion. Mention of any other need or anniversary is made in the Prayer of the Faithful. 3 The weekday readings ought to be used on their appointed days, except when there occurs a solemnity, a feast, or a memorial with proper readings. The priest may add the weekday readings which have been thus omitted to the readings of the previous or following days (provided that the sense is retained) in order that continuity be preserved. He may also choose between the readings omitted. In Masses for special groups it is permissible for the priest to choose readings more appropriate to the group, provided that the readings are taken from among those of the approved lectionary. 4. The Creed is said on all Sundays and solemnities, and also on special occasions. 5. In Masses which have a proper Preface it is not permitted to use a Eucharistic Prayer (e.g. Eucharistic Prayer 4) having an obligatory Preface which affects the unity of that Eucharistic Prayer. An exception is made in Lent where a Lenten weekday preface may be used with a Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation.
