Samsø: Europe’S Renewable Energy Island the Hairdryer Is Blowing, the Freezer Is Humming and the Temperature Is Comfortable in a House on Samsø
Samsø: Europe’s Renewable Energy Island The hairdryer is blowing, the freezer is humming and the temperature is comfortable in a house on Samsø. But forget about using coal or oil.. On this small Danish island, the electricity comes from wind turbines and the heat from a district heating system powered by a field of solar panels. 100% Electricity Independence When you live on Samsø, an island at the heart of Denmark, the electricity in the outlets does not come from fossil fuels or nuclear plants or other conventional sources. It comes from the wind. The island’s network of 11 wind turbines generates enough electricity to meet its entire electricity requirements. On wind-still days, when the turbines cannot generate enough electricity to power the island, energy flows from Denmark’s main energy grid to the island’s network. In turn, on windy days the island exports wind-generated energy to the national main system. The island has a positive annual net electricity balance, as it exports far more energy to the mainland than it receives. Samsø was named Denmark’s renewable energy island in 1997, based on the island’s ambitious goals to become energy independent by 2008. With its 11 onshore turbines, Samsø’s electricity sector has already reached its objectives. Turbines Instead of Hydrogen Cars While renewable energy technologies such as wind turbines have become increasingly reliable and accepted, the transport sector continues to lack robust sustainable solutions. Samsø’s residents are working towards a number of possible solutions, including powering motor vehicles with rapeseed oil and hydrogen fuel. -

Reinventing Europe through Local Initiative This was the theme of a conference organised by the European Association for Information on Local Development (AEIDL), on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The conference took place in Brussels on the 19th and 20th February 2014. Reinventing Europe The first day, which was held in the European Parliament, drew more than 150 participants from 27 countries. The contributions and debates focused on the need to renew the European Project, taking into account the initiatives of citizens and territories, in order to meet current economic, through Local Initiative environmental and social challenges. Samsø Kommune — Kommuneplan 2009 - 2021 Forord Kommunalreformen har givet Samsø Kommune en række nye plan- og myndighedsopgaver, som tidligere blev varetaget af Amtet. Mest iøjnefaldende er natur- og miljøområdet, hvor EU har lagt i støbeskeen til øgede krav for miljøtilstanden i vores vandløb, kystvande, grundvand og naturområder. Udvikling af økonomi, erhverv og befolkningstal er en udfordring for alle øer og landdistrikter i disse år, og for Samsø Kommune er det derfor vigtigt at udvise handlekraft, engagement og mål- bevidsthed. Øens status som selvstændig kommune skal fastholdes i samspil med nye og store kommuner. Samtidig skal Samsø finde sin plads i den nye Region Midtjylland, som er i en stærk udvikling. I denne planperiode skal der sikres beskæftigelsesmuligheder på øen og arbejdes hen mod positiv befolkningsudvikling. Der skal skabes og bevares attraktive natur- og kulturmiljøer til glæde for samsinger og vores gæster. Samsø skal som Vedvarende Energi Ø – VEØ – også i den kommende planperiode gå foran i arbejdet med, at afprøve og udvikle energiløsninger med et stort lokalt engagement og ejerskab. For en periode på 12 år fastlægger kommuneplanen de overordnede mål og retningslinjer for kommunens udvikling. -

Noter til en vandring i Brundby Kultur på hjul 2017 Af Pernille Helberg Stentoft www.kulturpaahjul.dk Noter til en vandring i Brundby dannede udgangspunkt for en byvandring i Brundby d. 17.6. 2017 i forbindelse med projektet Kultur på hjul. Noterne er blevet til ud fra materiale fra Samsø Egnsarkiv, gamle fotografier og kort, avisartikler, atikler om Brundby fra årbøger fra Slægts- og Lokalhistorisk Forening Samsø og samtaler med folk i Brundby. Mange tak til alle for hjælp og imødekommenhed. Brundby er faktisk større end den egentlig er. Sådan skriver Eigil Hempel i et lille hæfte om Brundby. Hæftet hedder Min gamle landsby. Sætningen er en god indgang til en vandring i Brundby, som faktisk er større end den egentlig er. Høje og bjerge i Brundby Noget af det karakteristisk ved Brundby er de mange høje og bakker, der findes midt i og omkring byen. Højene omkranser og tegner byen. Høje, som byen putter sig bag. Der er Kolhøj, hvor stubmøllen står og har stået siden 1817. Bøgebjerg, hvor møllestubben er, og hvor Buhr-møllen stod engang. Dansebjerg, hvor man i gamle dage dansede, når der var klinegilde (dvs. når man havde ler-klinet et hus), og hvor der senere kom til at stå en mølle, nemlig stubmøllen, som oprindeligt kom fra Endelave, og som senere blev flyttet til Kolhøj. Granhøj, hvor der også stod en mølle, hvor øens fængsel i en periode lå og hvor der senere blev bygget vandtårn og opført nyt vandværk. Dertil kommer Egebjerg, som findes bag gården Egebjerggård, Blegebakken midt i byen og Vorre Bakke, som ligger i nærheden af Mejerivej. -

Small-scale district heating systems are progressively switching to biomass boiler- based due to decreasing spot market electricity costs, increasing fuel costs and worsening framework conditions for CHP plants. At the same time, however, biomass resources should be reserved for other purposes and analyses indicate that small-scale district heating systems should switch to heat pump-based heat production. In this paper, we investigate the transition of district heating systems on the Danish renewable energy island Samsø. While the heating system is already renewable energy-based through the use of a biomass boiler, the system is neither economically optimal nor optimal in terms of integrating fluctuating renewable energy sources. The analyses are conducted in two steps. In the first step through EnergyPLAN-based overall energy systems analyses of Samsø with heat pumps replacing district heating biomass boilers and investigating system impacts, the ability to integrate fluctuating renewables and overall systems costs. In the second step through analyses of optimal business economic design and operation of the district heating plant through analyses using the energyPRO model where plant operation is optimised against an external electricity market. -
