Este barrio tiene una de las poblaciones latinx más grandes en los Estados Unidos, y la serie muestra el proceso de gentrificación que muchas personas en este barrio perciben como una amenaza a identidad cultural. Primero exploro la gentrificación en términos de su historia, sus causas, y sus consecuencias culturales. Luego, analizo la relación entre la gentrificación y la teoría de la conciencia mestiza de Gloria Anzaldúa para mostrar cómo los personajes principales de la serie llegan a valorar y expresar la complejidad de su identidad latinx. Argumento que Vida muestra que la gentrificación no solo es un cambio económico en un espacio geográfico sino también simboliza un proceso de cambio que refleja una zona fronteriza. De esa manera la serie da visibilidad a la diversidad de la experiencia latinx y la identidad queer. Vida es una serie de Tanya Saracho con tres temporadas de 2018 – 2020. Ganadora de premio GLAAD en 2019, Vida se distingue de otras series sobre comunidades latinx1 porque retrata una familia latinx, la comunidad queer, y la gentificación en Boyle Heights. En este barrio un 94 por ciento de la población se identifica como latino/a/x, y es similar a otras ciudades y otros barrios a través del país que han experimentado las consecuencias de la gentrificación. Se define este proceso como los cambios de un sitio urbano y pobre por la llegada de gente más adinerada que intenta mejorar el barrio en la forma de nuevos negocios y viviendas, pero también causa el desplazamiento de los residentes originales. Según una investigación de Ignacio López-Calvo titulada Latino Los Angeles in Film and Fiction, el uso de Los Angeles como el sitio central en las obras cinematografías y literarias es significativo para autores/creadores latinx y la gente latinx. Él explica que “Latino authors and filmmakers…are symbolically appropriating this social space that, in their view, belongs to them should at least be shared with them” (2). Saracho refleja esta creencia en Vida al mostrar la lucha en contra de la gentrificación y el deseo de permanecer en Boyle Heights como una manera de recuperar el lugar perdido. A través de Vida, se ve la importancia del mantenimiento de los sitios culturales y sentimentales para la gente latinx de la comunidad en Boyle Heights. Pero, mientras algunos personajes luchan injusticias sociales como la gentrificación, otros tienen luchas internas relacionadas con su lugar en la comunidad latinx. Por estas razones, se ve que Boyle Heights en la serie tiene un significado más complicado que solo el trasfondo de la trama. Para Saracho y su serie, Los Angeles es el trasfondo de los personajes que necesitan recuperar sus identidades perdidas a través del entendimiento que sus identidades son complicadas, pero también son una parte de la experiencia latinx. Dos aspectos de la experiencia de Los Angeles que Saracho quería incluir en la serie son la diversidad de la identidad latinx y de la identidad queer. En una entrevista con them sobre los temas de la comunidad LGBTQ, Saracho enfatiza “It’s a show about Americans who are the grandchildren of immigrants, which is most of America. Some people may think, ‘Oh, this must be an immigrant show.’ No, this is a show about American girls” (Expósito 2018). A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content.

The ongoing deforestation in Brazil related to the growth of soybeans is responsible for affecting important and unique native biomes along with causing the displacement of indigenous people -who are important actors in the protection of the environment-. In the last two decades, the soy expansion in Brazil was equivalent to an area five times the size of Switzerland. With the ArcGIS mapping tool, I was able to show the conflict between land being used for soy production that initially belonged to indigenous groups.
