Indiana University Bicentennial Medal Presentations The McKinney Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Lawyer Winter 2021 Issue Karen Bravo Named Dean of IU McKinney Law I The Klein Years: A Retrospective Bicentennial Campaign Finishes With Record-Breaking Flourish Coping During a Pandemic I Indiana University Bicentennial Medal Presentations Dear Alumni and Friends, As we approach the end of 2020, I am grateful for this opportunity to reflect upon the first six months of my deanship. I am struck by the number of challenges we faced in 2020, and am grateful for and in awe of the ways in which our community—our faculty, staff, students, and alumni, met those challenges. In these pages, you will read about the outstanding faculty efforts in the realm of online learn- ing. We are lucky that we had a strong online program prior to the pandemic, and experienced faculty members who helped one another as, with short notice, we transformed all of our courses into an all-online format last Spring and Summer. Their expertise and commitment also created benefits for our Fall semester’s hybrid teaching format, which featured online courses, along with a full menu of in-person (and properly socially-distanced) course offerings. The contributions of all of our staff members have been essential as we transitioned to all-online, then a hybrid format. Permit me to recognize, in particular, the roles of our extraordinary IT staff in providing support for online and in-person courses, online exams, and dozens of virtual online events and programs. You will see that they have been honored for their extraordinary efforts. We must also commend our students for their resilience during this trying time. They con- tinued their pro bono activities and student organizations offered programs for their mem- bers, all in a virtual environment. You will also read about our school’s response to the racial tensions throughout our nation. Alumni and members of the local legal community (with the assistance of the IU McKinney Office of Diversity & Inclusion), gathered on Juneteenth for an event seeking an end to racial inequities and violence, as well as advocating for inclusivity and acceptance. IU McKinney students added their voices to the message, and many faculty, staff and students attended the event. As you may know, Indiana University celebrated its bicentennial in 2020 and, while much of the celebration had to be cut short because of the pandemic, we are happy to report that we exceeded our fund-raising goal during the Bicentennial Campaign. We have included in this issue an account of that extraordinary effort. We are so very grateful to all who made contri- butions in support of our school. Because of you, we will be able to continue our mission of providing an exceptional legal education for upcoming generations of students. I began my deanship under the strictures of the pandemic and have not yet had the opportunity to meet as many of you in person as I had hoped. Please know that I plan to rectify that situation as soon as it is safe to do so. I was able to “meet” many of you virtu- ally, through several events, and we are planning more of those virtual gatherings in the upcoming Spring semester. Watch our website for more details. Finally, I want to wish you all the best for a peaceful, happy, and most especially—a healthy 2021. I look forward to meeting you and sharing with you our plans to build upon the strong foun- dations of our school, and to make the next decade at IU McKinney even better than the last one! A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content.

° A Threat to Brazilian Biodiversity and Climate Change: The Soy Industry, Beatriz Olivieri, Rollins College My presentation discusses the current environmental dilemma Brazil is facing. The desire to pursue significant economic development leads the Brazilian government to make poor decisions regarding the environment. The ongoing deforestation in Brazil related to the growth of soybeans is responsible for affecting important and unique native biomes along with causing the displacement of indigenous people -who are important actors in the protection of the environment-. In the last two decades, the soy expansion in Brazil was equivalent to an area five times the size of Switzerland. With the ArcGIS mapping tool, I was able to show the conflict between land being used for soy production that initially belonged to indigenous groups.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

Announced today are the eight members of the second class of the Momentum Fellowship, a full-year program of deep, customized creative and professional support for writers, directors, and producers from underrepresented communities who are poised to take the next step in their careers, working across documentary and feature filmmaking, and episodic content. Sundance Institute also announced the four awardees of the inaugural Launch Grant Fund, a new opportunity for emerging filmmakers from underrepresented communities launching their first feature film. “Each of the exceptionally talented artists in these two programs brings a bold creative vision to their work, and we are thrilled to support them at such critical junctures – launching their first feature films and building sustainable careers,” said Karim Ahmad, Director, Outreach & Inclusion. The Momentum Fellowship, which launched last year, evolved from the Women at Sundance Fellowship, a highly successful model that merited expansion for impact across a broader cohort of underrepresented communities. Those eligible for this larger, more intersectional program include artists identifying as women, non-binary and/or transgender, artists of color, and artists with disabilities. The 2020 Momentum Fellows are: Andrew Ahn, Linda Yvette Chávez, Christina Choe, Deborah Esquenazi, Rodney Evans, Penny Lane, Avril Z.
