ODAAT centers of Elena, Penelope, and Lydia, three generations of a Latina/x family. Many entertainment reviewers and fans praised the series for its progressive and nuanced portrayals of Latina/x characters. However, I argue that while ODAAT depicts Latina/x characters that transcend some United States mainstream media tropes about Latinas/xs, the series also relies on conventional markers of Latina/x identity as tools with which to communicate progressive messages around identity. I expand upon scholarship in Latina/o media studies, feminist media studies, Black feminist media studies, and mental health representation in media. I take an intersectional approach to address how Latina/x identity intersects with issues of lesbian sexuality, straight elder sexual expression, pan-Latina/x cultural traditions such as the quinceañera, pan-Latina/x standards of beauty, and cultural stigma around mental health. I ask: How does ODAAT construct the identities of its central Latina/x characters? What tropes does the series rely on to build these characters and what tropes does the series resist? ii INTRODUCTION: LATINA/X/O REPRESENTATION This thesis will focus on representations of Latina/x characters on the television series One Day at a Time (2017-2020) [hereafter ODAAT], excluding characters who identify as male. My project underscores the necessity of understanding tensions around constructions of Latina/x identity in media by exploring the depictions of coming out, expressions of straight sexuality by an elderly Latina, the negotiation of culture in terms of pan-Latina/x traditions (the quinceañera) and beliefs around beauty and mental health. I ask: How does ODAAT construct the identities of its central Latina/x characters? What tropes does the series rely on to build these characters? What tropes does the series resist? I focus on tensions that emerge between what is presented as Cuban (discussed more shortly, but a very generic version of “Cuban”) tradition, and more progressive “American” ways of thinking. I argue that while ODAAT depicts Latina/x characters that transcend some United States (U.S.) media tropes about Latinas/xs, the series also relies on common markers of Latina/x identity as tools with which to communicate progressive messages around identity. In other words, the series engages with tropes to create complex, nuanced Latina/x characters who do not fall neatly within one box. Doing so, ODAAT demonstrates that Latina/x identity cannot be easily defined.

A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content.

The desire to pursue significant economic development leads the Brazilian government to make poor decisions regarding the environment. The ongoing deforestation in Brazil related to the growth of soybeans is responsible for affecting important and unique native biomes along with causing the displacement of indigenous people -who are important actors in the protection of the environment-. In the last two decades, the soy expansion in Brazil was equivalent to an area five times the size of Switzerland. With the ArcGIS mapping tool, I was able to show the conflict between land being used for soy production that initially belonged to indigenous groups.

This study was conducted in the field using an action research approach with triangulated methods of data collection including semi- structured interviews, participant observations, and artwork analysis. While research was conducted in two different art programs with similar populations, the main site of study was at SpArc Service’s Cultural Arts Center located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The secondary site was at Center for Creative Works located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. The data collected between these sites produced common trends in strategies and adaptations that are used in the art room. Individual case studies conducted at SpArc Services allowed strategies to be implemented and documented in the art room. When implementing these findings, I saw how these strategies supported the participant’s goals as outlined in their Individual Outcome Summary. While working with the individual participants, areas of art making included textiles, mixed-media materials, and pop culture references.

    FIRST SECTION Experiences of the Lahti project Marja Holmila Introduction The Lahti Project is a multi component community action programme aimed at the prevention of alcohol related harms. The project site is the city of Lahti in Finland. The project relies to a great extent on the work of local professionals. It includes work in developing local alcohol policy discussion, education and information, health care intervention for heavy drinkers, youth work, support for family members and server training. Formative, process and outcome evaluation research are being conducted in order to assess the impact of the project (Holmila 1992; 1995). The programme is an experimental one, and its purpose is to obtain information about the feasibility and possibilities of local prevention. For that reason research has an important role in the project. The programme started during the autumn of 1992, and was mostly finished by the end of 1994, even if some parts are still being continued. The final report is currently being written, and will contain description of the processes, research results of the community's life- styles, responses to alcohol use and evaluation of the project (Holmila 1996). This paper will not be a comprehensive presentation of the Lahti project. The paper gives a short summary of the project’s main features, and discusses in more detail some issues related to the process of working and the relations between research and action. Starting the project The initiative to start Lahti project came from several sources simultaneously. When the wish to start such action had developed independently both in the city of Lahti, among alcohol educators and among researchers, the project began without difficulties.

    48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards NOMINATIONS – June 25th Please read below and check your entries for the correct spelling, title, and to make sure nobody who is eligible is missing. This list marks everyone who is officially a Daytime Emmy nominee in these categories and is the list we will use to verify statue orders in the event of a win. To make changes to this list, please read below carefully for the instructions: Please send an email to Daytime Administration at [email protected] with the subject line “Nominee Corrections and Additions – June 25th” and list the following information in the body of the email: Category Show Title Entrant’s Name Entrant’s Title # of Episodes in 2020 (if a Series) Job Description (if an off-list title)** **All off-list titles, or individuals with less than the required minimum percentage of episodes, are subject to approval by the Awards Committee. All changes made prior to the ceremony on June 25th will be gratis for this year. We accept changes for $150 per change for 30 days after the ceremony. Changes beyond 30 days after the ceremony will not be accepted under any circumstances. Deadlines are established by the ceremony date in which that category is rewarded.
