Older adults in prime-time television in Taiwan: Prevalence, portrayal, and communication interaction. Journal of Cross Cultural Gerontology, 24, 355- 372. Abstract: A content and thematic analysis of 109 episodes (94.9 hours) of prime-time dramas examined the portrayals of aging and the nature of intergenerational interaction involving older adults on Taiwanese television. The content analysis revealed that older characters, regardless of sex, appeared less frequently and in less prominent roles than other adult characters, but not in comparison to adolescents and children. The older characters who did appear, however, were predominantly portrayed as cognitively sound and physically healthy. The thematic analysis provided a different picture, showing that older characters talked about age explicitly, strategically linking it to death and despondence, to influence younger characters. Communication behavior themes identified included supporting, superiority, and controlling for older characters, and reverence/respect for younger characters. Findings are compared to those from similar studies of U.S. media and discussed from a Cultivation Theory perspective in terms of their reinforcement of Chinese age stereotypes and the traditional values of filial piety and age hierarchy in the context of globalization and culture change. -

Chapter one is a literature review and general summary of research on the relationship between local and transnational media. Chapter two focuses on Asian audience preferences and the introduction of transnational broadcasting into East Asia. -

Chi-Wen Gallery Chi-Wen Gallery at Art Basel Hong Kong 2017 Galleries|1D33|Chien-Chi Chang, Chang Chao-Tang, Wang Jun-Jieh, Yuan Goang-Ming, Kao Chung-Li The World of Video Art: The Expansion of Visual Environment — A Video Art Presentation by 5 Taiwanese Artists since 1970 Chi-Wen Gallery for ART BASEL HK 2017 continues its programme on the history of Taiwanese art video/film by presenting some of the most important early Taiwanese video artists / film makers. The artists are Chien-Chi Chang (張乾琦), Chang Chao- Tang (張照堂), Kao Chung-Li (⾼重黎), Wang Jung-Jieh (⺩俊傑) and Yuan Goang-Ming (袁廣鳴). Save for one, the video artists in this presentation were born in the sixties, at the time of the emergence and early propagation of television in Taiwan. Taiwan’s first television station was launched in 1962 and in fact, the oldest artist in the selection, Chang Chao-Tang (b. 1943), worked for the state-owned China Television Company (CTV) as a photojournalist. This generation of artists was also the nation’s first to have easy access to cameras, camcorders, editing stations and other tools for creating and manipulating video. The end of martial law in Taiwan in 1987, together with economic growth and the rapid development of electronic devices during these years, influenced the cultural development of Taiwan and consequently the work practices of Taiwanese contemporary artists began to change. Artists felt increasingly comfortable to explore different subject matters without limits and their creative realm was able to expand with the help of new technologies. -

religions Article Live Streaming and Digital Stages for the Hungry Ghosts and Deities Alvin Eng Hui Lim Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore, Block AS5, 7 Arts Link, Singapore 117570, Singapore; [email protected] Received: 25 May 2020; Accepted: 10 July 2020; Published: 17 July 2020 Abstract: Many Chinese temples in Singapore provide live streaming of getai (English: a stage for songs) during the Hungry Ghost Month as well as deities’ birthday celebrations and spirit possessions—a recent phenomenon. For instance, Sheng Hong Temple launched its own app in 2018, as part of a digital turn that culminated in a series of live streaming events during the temple’s 100-year anniversary celebrations. Deities’ visits to the temple from mainland China and Taiwan were also live-streamed, a feature that was already a part of the Taichung Mazu Festival in Taiwan. Initially streamed on RINGS.TV, an app available on Android and Apple iOS, live videos of getai performances can now be found on the more sustainable platform of Facebook Live. These videos are hosted on Facebook Pages, such as “Singapore Getai Supporter” (which is listed as a “secret” group), “Singapore Getai Fans Page”, “Lixin Fan Page”, and “LEX-S Watch Live Channel”. These pages are mainly initiated and supported by LEX(S) Entertainment Productions, one of the largest entertainment companies running and organising getai performances in Singapore. This paper critically examines this digital turn and the use of digital technology, where both deities and spirits are made available to digital transmissions, performing to the digital camera in ways that alter the performative aspects of religious festivals and processions. -

(CTV, simplified Chinese: 中国电视 公司; traditional Chinese: 中國電視公司; pinyin: Zhōngguó Diànshì Gōngsī; Pe̍ h-ōe-jī: Tiong-kok-tiān-sī-kong-si) (Formerly called Taiwan Daytime TV (TDT) in 1969- 1975) was established on September 3, 1968 by the then-ruling Nationalist Party of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The party owned the majority stake of the network. Trial broadcast started on October 9, 1969 and the channel formally started broadcasting on October 31 the same year. It was the first television channel to broadcast full colour television service to the whole island. The third version of CTV logo (1980s-October 31, 1997) On August 9, 1999, the channel was publicly listed on Taiwan Stock Exchange, becoming the first publicly listed broadcasting company on the island. In 2006, due to effects borne by the media reform law in Taiwan requiring all political parties to divest their control in radio and television companies, 90% of CTV shares were sold to the China Times media group, effectively giving the station leeway to some of its satellite TV concerns, notably the Chung T'ien Television (CTi), one of major cable television programmers in Taiwan. Some CTV shows are now seen on CTi's two channels on cable. It is currently the largest television channels on the island. Its shows consistently rated 2nd in all major time slots, and is home to Taiwan's most watched early evening newscast, the CTV News Global Report.
