It is expected that large smart 引id markets wi11 emerge in Europe, Asia and the united states and that more comprehensive activities toward a smart community WⅢ develop.1n order for Japanese industry to participate in these activities, it is necessary to accelerate domestic smart grid・related activities, and a process that encourages public and private sector discussion of common goals, such as achieving global standardization and sustainable social system development,is also needed. This Process vvould also enable companies to vvork together to address issues that 、Nould otherwise be di仟icult for them to resolve by themselves. Considering this, the Ne、N Energy and lndustrial Techn010gy Development organization (NEDO) established the Japan smart community AⅡiance (JSCA) to strengthen c011aboration among a ゛1ide range of concerned organizations and also conduct activities of mutualinterest, such as dissemination of information and preparation of roadmaps to achieve global standardization. CHP and tri-generation systems offer high energy conversion efficiency and hence the potential to reduce fuel costs and CO2 emissions. This paper serves to provide a state-of-the-art review of fuel cell technology operating in the domestic built environment in CHP and tri-generation system applications. The review aims to carry out an assessment of the following topics: (1) the operational advantages fuel cells offer in CHP and tri-generation system configurations, specifically, compared to conventional combustion based technologies such as Stirling engines, (2) how decarbonisation, running cost and energy security in the domestic built environment may be addressed through the use of fuel cell technology, and (3) what has been done to date and what needs to be done in the future. The paper commences with a review of fuel cell technology, then moves on to examine fuel cell CHP systems operating in the domestic built environment, and finally explores fuel cell tri-generation systems in domestic built environment applications. The paper concludes with an assessment of the present development of, and future challenges for, domestic fuel cells operating in CHP and tri-generation systems.

Constructed as one of the 2002 FIFA World Cup venues, Niigata Stadium celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. It has been recognized under the name of “Denka” since 2014, when Denka acquired the naming rights. Its distinctive design resembles a swan spreading its wings as if to take off. With a capacity of 40,000 people, it is also used as a home stadium for Albirex Niigata, a local soccer team in the J2 league. It has also been awarded the J league Best Pitch Award six times for its well-maintained pitch. Using this stadium as a base, Denka has been actively spons oring sporting events such as the Denka Athletics Challenge Cup*1, which has been held every year since 2019. Denka decided to acquire the naming rights due to its strong connection with Niigata Prefecture. Currently, around 2,000 employees, or one third of the entire Denka Group, work in Niigata prefecture.
