It is expected that large smart 引id markets wi11 emerge in Europe, Asia and the united states and that more comprehensive activities toward a smart community WⅢ develop.1n order for Japanese industry to participate in these activities, it is necessary to accelerate domestic smart grid・related activities, and a process that encourages public and private sector discussion of common goals, such as achieving global standardization and sustainable social system development,is also needed. This Process vvould also enable companies to vvork together to address issues that 、Nould otherwise be di仟icult for them to resolve by themselves. Considering this, the Ne、N Energy and lndustrial Techn010gy Development organization (NEDO) established the Japan smart community AⅡiance (JSCA) to strengthen c011aboration among a ゛1ide range of concerned organizations and also conduct activities of mutualinterest, such as dissemination of information and preparation of roadmaps to achieve global standardization. JSCA has members from the electric povver, gas, automobile, information and communications, electric machinery, construction and trading industries as we11 as the public sector and academia.(A Iist of members is included later in this brochure.) 1t is 、Norking to facilitate the development of a Smart community through the c011ective e什ort of the public and private sectors as an a11・Japan team by planning and implementing activities that benefit Japan's economic community. such activities also include responding t010cal government needs, overcoming barriers and issues that lie ahead as Vve11 as sharing of information on the use of public funding for smart grid techn010gy development ^ 酬.圖◎A President 冬ず Toshiba Board Hitachi,1TOCHU, JGC, Mitsubishi Electric. • Fuel Cell Technology for Domestic Built Environment Applications: State Of-The-Art Review
FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY FOR DOMESTIC BUILT ENVIRONMENT APPLICATIONS: STATE OF-THE-ART REVIEW Theo Elmer*, Mark Worall, Shenyi Wu and Saffa Riffat Architecture, Climate and Environment Research Group The University of Nottingham, NG7 2RD (UK) *corresponding author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Fuel cells produce heat when generating electricity, thus they are of particular interest for combined heat and power (CHP) and combined cooling heat and power (CCHP) applications, also known as tri-generation systems. CHP and tri-generation systems offer high energy conversion efficiency and hence the potential to reduce fuel costs and CO2 emissions. This paper serves to provide a state-of-the-art review of fuel cell technology operating in the domestic built environment in CHP and tri-generation system applications. The review aims to carry out an assessment of the following topics: (1) the operational advantages fuel cells offer in CHP and tri-generation system configurations, specifically, compared to conventional combustion based technologies such as Stirling engines, (2) how decarbonisation, running cost and energy security in the domestic built environment may be addressed through the use of fuel cell technology, and (3) what has been done to date and what needs to be done in the future. The paper commences with a review of fuel cell technology, then moves on to examine fuel cell CHP systems operating in the domestic built environment, and finally explores fuel cell tri-generation systems in domestic built environment applications. The paper concludes with an assessment of the present development of, and future challenges for, domestic fuel cells operating in CHP and tri-generation systems.

Business Development of the Osaka Gas Group [Domestic Energy Businesses] [Overseas Energy Businesses along the Energy Value Chain] [Environment and Non-energy Businesses] Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. 23 Domestic Energy Businesses [ Gas Business ] Characteristics of the Japanese Gas Industry ■ Although more than 200 gas companies exist in Japan, the majority of domestic gas sales volume comprises the gas sales volumes of a few major gas suppliers. ■ The industry’s supply of LNG, the primary source of natural gas, is almost completely dependent upon imports. ■ In contrast to many other countries, Japan does not have any international gas pipelines or gas pipe- lines interlinked nationally. ■ The natural gas business is operated in an integrated manner, from import to transmission, storage, distribution and sales. Special Qualities of Natural Gas Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas has a much smaller impact on the environment. In addition, natural gas is more abundant than oil and, unlike oil, natural gas reserves are not concentrated in specific geographical locations. In particular, because of its environmental advantages, demand for natural gas as a more environmentally friendly energy resource is expected to increase in the future, reflecting increasing public concerns and awareness about the environment.
