The regulations are particularly severe for wine and include various aspects of the viticulture practices and winemaking techniques. Nevertheless, the use of phenolic profiles for quality control is still fragmented and incomplete, even if they are a promising tool for quality evaluation. Only a few methods have been already validated and widely applied, and an integrated approach is in fact still missing because of the complex dependence of the chemical profile of wine on many viticultural and enological factors, which have not been clarified yet. For example, there is a lack of studies about the phenolic composition in relation to the wine authenticity of white and especially rosé wines. As autumn approaches, we’re keeping an eye on the ripening grapes while preparing to bottle the remainder of the 2019 vintage, and thus make room in the cellar for the new wines to come. The general buzz on the grapevine (pun intended!) is that this vintage will be a bit ear- lier than usual, and that vineyard yields will be less than average. So much comes down to the last month or so of ripening in the vineyard, and we’re just entering that time as this goes to print. Fingers crossed, for an excellent, and “uneventful” harvest! With gratitude and appreciation for our wine club friends, all of us at Amphora Winery wish you a wonderful autumn, and CHEERS! Our 2015 Aglianico (pronounced ah-YAH-nee-koh) was our second vintage to spend time aging in our terracotta amphorae, and the influence of the clay lends an old-world profile to this wine: bracing yet gentle tannins, a clean minerality, and subtle red fruit notes. The character of this varietal works well with the clay influence, and makes for a food-friendly wine. This one will age elegantly for years, and if you plan to enjoy it in the short-term, be sure to decant it. Delightful pairings include cacio e pepe, and grill roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic. -

Identification and Characterization of Swiss Grapevine Cultivars Using Microsatellite Markers

FREY and JUÈ RG GAFNER Agroscope ACWChangins-Wa Èdenswil Forschungsanstalt fuÈ r Obst-, Wein- und Gartenbau CH-8820 WaÈdenswil, Postfach 185 E-mail: [email protected] Microsatellite analysis with up to 12 markers was performed on 463 grapevine samples mostly collected from Swiss cultivar collections, viticulturists, winegrowers and private collectors, using an optimized and fast method based on quick DNA extraction, six-plex PCR and automated fragment analysis. Several already published genetic profiles were confirmed, misnamed plants were identified, and additional new profiles are presented in this study. Some of the misnamed plants could be named correctly, while cultivar allocation of others needs confirmation. We found that 'Briegler' seems to be a synonym for 'Bondola nera', possibly the German name for a cultivar grown in Sou- thern Switzerland. In the case of 'Erlenbacher Schwarz' we found types with two different profiles. The ones from Eastern Switzerland are identical to 'Hitzkircher', while the type collected in Western Switzerland is different. Fur- ther data collection is necessary to elucidate which type is the true-to-type cultivar. Also an old and rare cultivar na- med 'MoÈrchel' was shown to be identical to 'Trollinger' (syn. BISSON B.P. 51, 45250 Briare, France Résumé : Les propositions antérieures de structure des cépages français en groupes écogéographiques sont déve- loppées par l'intégration des formes individuelles en unités taxonomiques basées sur la morphologie. Sans que le travail présenté ici puisse être considéré comme certain et définitif, tel quel, il est offert à titre comparatif aux avan- cées de biochimie génétique récemment effectuées. Abstract : Two specialists, NEGRUL (1946) et LEVADOUX (1948) proposed for Europe vine-plants cultiva- ted a classification in natural groups issued from ecogeographical areas relatively closed in their situations and evo- lutions. These ampelographs are complementary in their propositions, Russian for Eastern Europe and French for Western forms. Middle-East is the probable origin of mediterranean viticulture with its vine-varieties then the local wild forms in more septentrional vineyard extensions. After sortotypes or ecogeogroups definitions, anterior structural propositions of French vine-varieties in eco-geo- graphical groups are developped by individual integration forms in taxonomic and morphologic unities. The pre- sent propositions are not immovable nor definitive but as such they may be useful in recent genetic advancements. They can confirm or not some new biochemical diagnosis. Riesling 2018
RIESLING 2018 We have been growing Riesling in our vineyards since the 1890’s and in that time have developed our own regional style, with abundant fruit flavours and wonderful balance. Our aged Rieslings are wines of remarkable complexity and flavour, of which we are very proud. - Colin Campbell COLOUR Brilliant, green hue. BOUQUET Nose is alive with aromas of lemon tart and limey depth, spring florals with hints of orange blossom also very present. PALATE Very youthful palate, the floral freshness explodes and zesty limey fruit persists on the palate with some gooseberry notes with hints of lemon meringue pie. The acidity is ever present and leaves the palate clean with just the perfume of such lively fruit. CELLARING AND SERVING SUGGESTIONS The 2018 vintage gave us grapes of distinctive varietal character and some lovely riper limey characters. Our 2018 Riesling is bone dry, with floral notes that give a suggestion of sweetness. Perfect partner for a carpaccio of king fish or a quick fried dish of calamari. Enjoy in it’s youth or cellar for up to 10 years. DATE TASTED June 2018 THE GRAPES Riesling sourced from two blocks in our Silverburn vineyard adjacent to the winery. WINEMAKING Vintage 2018 flowed quite seamlessly due to the lack of rain. We were able to choose the optimum time to harvest our Riesling and we blended our two blocks post ferment, one adding freshness and aroma and the other more zesty palate weight. TECHNICAL DETAILS Alc 11.8% T.A. 6.4g/l pH 3.12 CHARDONNAY 2018 My favoured style where the fruit is dominant, displaying the pure flavours we can achieve with chardonnay fruit grown in the Rutherglen wine region.
