Sémillon, Kalin Cellars, Livermore Valley 2001 8.50 16.00 Made from 100 year old vines, the wine was fermented in French oak for ten months and bottled without filtration, and just released after 14 years in bottle. It boasts lots of vigor and youthfulness with a light gold color; aromas of gravel and honeysuckle; flavors of figs, orange marmalade, melons and Umami! “Most wines evoke the taste sensations of sweet, salty, bitter and sour. Kalin Cellars wines are among the VERY, VERY few wines presently available that evoke the FIFTH Taste of Umami.” _ From the winery "Nobody in America gets more finesse and complexity as well as flavor out of their sauvignon blanc and semillon than Kalin and its extremely talented winemaker Terry Leighton." _ Robert Parker ◙3. Yep, 2001 is the current release as Terry Leighton doesn’t release his wines until it’s fully developed, and in the case of his Sauvignon Blanc – 12 to 14 years. "An incredibly fresh, exuberant wine with beautiful caramelized citrus, honeysuckle, lanolin, medium to full body, great acidity and a long, heady finish." _ Robert Parker 5. Merlot, Cuda Ridge, Livermore Valley 2015 6.50 12.50 “Vibrant and complex with fruit as the fundamental structure of this wine. Fragrant red fruit aromas. Bold and complex on the palate with plums, dark cherries, cassis, leather, chocolate. Well balanced tannins and acid makes for a juicy finish”. _ From the winemaker 6. Cabernet Sauvignon, Wood Family “Viva”, Livermore Valley 2015 6.50 12.00 “This wine is a beautiful purple-red, very much like the color of fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice. It has classic cassis fruit as well as the flavor of melt-in-your-mouth chocolate covered cherries... dusky aromas of forest floor and finely ground black pepper emerge. The palate continues with chocolate-cherry flavors. But, don’t be fooled, this wine is dry and it has warm, chewy tannins with moderate acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon, McGrail “Reserve”, Livermore Valley 2014 9.50 18.00 Editors’ Choice. “Richly textured and generously flavored, this wine shows how good Livermore Cabernet can be. Aged in new Hungarian barrels, it has cedar and spice aromas, seductive ripe fruit flavors and a mouth-filling, palate-soothing viscosity bolstered by loads of fine-grained tannins. The wines are not unlike a white Burgundy in terms of its flintiness, spices and texture. This one, medium bodied, from high altitude vineyards, boasts aromas of flowers, apple and white peach; and fresh and savory flavors of citrus rind, nectarine and white fruit. 25. Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc “Le Grand Senais”, Dominique Crochet, Loire, France 2015 6.50 12.00 “Shiny yellow color. White flowers, citrus and pear powerful aromas. Also mineral. On the palate, the wine is smooth, full bodied and long on the finish…” _ From the Winemaker 30. Aligoté, Domaine Marc Colin, Côte-d’Or, France 2016 6.50 12.00 This famous white wine producer in Burgundy works some of greatest plots and vineyards including Le Montrachet & Bâtard-Montrachet. His Aligoté vines are from Puligny-Montrachet which are over 70 years old. This one boasts green apple, peach pit and creamy aromas; flavors of hazelnuts, white mushrooms, spices, and mineral qualities. 33. Chardonnay, Uncle Yu's by Navarro Vineyards, Mendocino 2016 6.50 12.00 Medium-bodied and flavored, not oaky, fresh with pear, apple and slight fig flavors. Good value. The story wasn’t there in the Chronicle’s wine section that morning; instead, a front-page head- line caught his attention, announcing that a huge fire had destroyed $100 million worth of wine in a warehouse on Mare Island, California. Thackrey had nearly all his wine, some 4,000 cases, stored in a warehouse on Mare Island called Wines Central and his first thought was reflex denial: ‘Hmm, I didn’t know there was another wine stor- age warehouse on Mare Island.’ He clicked open the story. The warehouse was indeed Wines Central and it had been burning since 3.30 the previous afternoon. Despite the efforts of 120 firefighters, 21 fire engines and 12 aircraft, the fire was still sending up a 700ft plume of smoke into the sky. ‘My reaction then was a fairly basic “Oh shit”,’ Thackrey says. ‘Outside of that warehouse I had barely enough wine left to drink myself into the grave. On the other hand I knew that building and I thought some of my wine might survive a fire there. It was a vast, vast military fortress built of reinforced concrete and steel and only one part of it was wood, so I knew it wasn’t going to burn to the ground. There was also no question in my mind that it was arson.’ The first call he made was to his insurance broker. He left a message saying they would have to file a claim, possibly a very large claim.

    SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION IN DEEP BOREHOLES AT THE MEUSE/HAUTE MARNE UNDERGROUND RESEARCH LABORATORY, NORTHEASTERN FRANCE H. REBOURS, J. DELAY, A. VINSOT Andra, Laboratoire de recherche souterrain de Meuse/Haute-Marne, Route Départementale 960, 55290 Bure, France ABSTRACT From 1994 to 1996, the preliminary investigation carried out by Andra, identified a sector favourable for hosting a laboratory in argillaceous Callovo-Oxfordian formation which has a thickness of 130 m and lies more than 400 m below ground level. In November 1999 Andra began building an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with a 3D seismic survey over 4 km². From 2000 to 2004, large programs of boreholes were carried out on site and on the sector in order to define the characteristics of formations, to improve the regional geological and hydrogeological knowledge and to provide an accurate definition of structural features in Callovo-Oxfordian argillites and Dogger limestones. These drilling programs have provided a fine characterization of the argillites on the laboratory area and a good correlation of geological properties at a sector scale. 1 Choice of Eastern France ANDRA is in charge of analyzing the possibility of implanting a reversible nuclear waste disposal in deep geological formations. With this aim it has undertaken the construction of an underground laboratory in the eastern part of the Paris Basin. This region, with a geological history running over 365 million years and historically known to be stable, had been generally identified (Figure 1). Figure 1.     First Battle of the Marne After invading Belgium and north-eastern France during the Battle of Frontiers, the German army had reached within 30 miles of Paris. Their progress had been rapid, giving the French little time to regroup. The First Battle of the Marne was fought between September 6th through the 12th in 1914, with the German advance being brought to a halt, and a stalemate and trench warfare being established as the norm. As the German armies neared Paris, the French capital prepared itself for a siege. The defending French and British forces were at the point of exhaustion, having retreated continuously for 10-12 days under repeated German attack until they had reached the south of the River Marne. Nevertheless, the German forces were close to achieving a breakthrough against the French forces, and were only saved on the 7th of September by the aid of 6,000 French reserve infantry troops brought in from Paris by a convoy of taxi cabs, 600 cabs in all. On September 9th, the German armies began a retreat ordered by the German Chief of Staff Helmuth von Moltke. Moltke feared an Allied breakthrough, plagued by poor communication from his lines at the Marne. The retreating armies were pursued by the French and British, although the pace of the Allied advance was slow - a mere 12 miles in one day. The German armies ceased their withdrawal after 40 miles at a point north of the River Aisne, where the First and Second Armies dug in, preparing trenches that were to last for several years.

Average rainfall is still 700mm/year. Damage caused by spring frosts has slightly increased despite a drop in the number of frosty nights due to earlier bud burst. The consequences are already visible and are indeed positive for the quality of the musts: Over the past 30 years: - 1,3 g H2SO4/l total acidity Earlier harvests starting 18 days earlier + 0,7 % vol natural alcoholic strength by volume These beneficial effects may well continue if global warming is limited to a 2°C rise. However, the Champagne Region is now exploring ideas that would enable the inherent characteristics of its wines to be preserved in less optimistic climate change scenarios.
