LANGRES, A FORTRESS “Located in the Champagne region, near the borders of both Burgundy and Franche-Comté, Langres is an acropolis listed among the 50 most beautiful towns in France. Proudly perched on its limestone plateau for more than 2,000 years, the town was once a Gallo-Roman capital, followed by an episcopal see, and later an impenetrable royal fortress. With more than 8 km of ramparts, it’s the largest walled city in Europe! But this stronghold of Langres doesn’t reveal its secrets too easily. To truly discover the town, take the time to stroll along the 3 km of wall walks that offer splendid panoramas of the surrounding valleys. Then, get lost in the narrow streets lined with Renaissance dwellings, mansions and former convents. Next, discover the canonical district and its cloister, nestled at the foot of the Saint-Mammès Romanesque cathedral. There’s also the Art and History Museum that holds the keys to Langres’ past, as well as the Denis Diderot House of Enlightenment, dedicated to one of the brightest minds of his time, born in Langres in 1713.”
