  • Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a Seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne Is on the Verge of Profound Change
Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne is on the verge of profound change. There is a growing realization in the region that its viticulture has become slovenly and the subtleties of its terroir have been neglected. The era of great growers and great vineyards is just beginning.” —The New France, Andrew Jefford, 2002 The Champagne region in France is dominated by a handful of brand names. These négoçiants and coopératives produce 80% of the total output in Champagne, yet they only own 12% of the vineyards. They may, by law, purchase as much of their grapes or pressed juice or already made sparking wine (known as sur-lattes) as they wish from all over the region. They bring to market a mass produced commodity - the most successful processed agricultural product in human history - a Champagne made in a “house style.” This is a sparkling wine made in a highly interventionist and formulaic way with swift pressing, extensive use of chaptalization, acidifi cation, cultured yeast strains, enzymes, nitrogenous yeast nutrients and rapid temperature controlled fermentations. They produce many millions of cases annually. By contrast, Small Growers, or “récoltant-manipulants,” may purchase only 5% of their fruit and handcraft their limited quantities of Champagne from individual villages and parcels where the inherent qualities of the vineyards imprint themselves into the wines. These winemakers are brave souls in an industrialized age: growing, crafting and bottling their own Champagne, offering it to the world as their life’s work. They deserve your support. Problem: There’s only one “Champagne” While Champagne consists of one AOC it is one of the largest in France, totaling 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres).

  • Be Tiresome to Read Straight Through. Instead, It Should Serve As a Singular Expert’S Guide to What to Look for When Shopping
Book Reviews 361 be tiresome to read straight through. Instead, it should serve as a singular expert’s guide to what to look for when shopping. For each producer, he includes recommen- dations for specific labels along with one to four dollar signs to indicate prices less than $60, $60–$100, $100–$200, and more than $200. I have found consistently deli- cious grower champagne for as little as $35 and rarely need to exceed $75 to get something memorable. While Liem’s writing makes the reading comfortable, the layout of the book can be sidetracking with single and multi-page inserts covering special topics breaking up the flow of the text sometimes in mid-sentence. Additionally, with notes for the first two parts in the back of the book, one frequently has to turn back and forth. Since there is ample room in the margins, it would have been more reader-friendly to set the notes there. Except for portraits of producers the captions for which are in the margins of facing pages, there is no indication of what the other photos that beautifully illustrate the book show. It would be nice to know, for instance, what I am looking at on pp. 142–143 and pp. 232–233. On the other hand, the 12-page glos- sary, bibliography, and 6-page, 3-column index are useful resources, especially for the novice. Champagne is a significant work by someone who has thoroughly immersed himself into the land and culture of the region while still maintaining an independent perspective. Because of the range and depth of its coverage, the book should be of interest to collectors in search of the best producers and, although only village- level locations and not specific addresses are provided, to wine tourists planning a trip to the region.

  • Grower Champagne Club MAY 2021-2
Grower Champagne Club May 2021 BERTRAND-DELESPIERRE Didier Bertrand and Chantal Delespierre make for a fabulous husband and wife team, one that has managed their 24-acre estate between Reims and Épernay, in the Montagne de Reims, since 1980. Now their work passes on to their children, Adrien and Clémence, and in the manner that has become common in the new generation of producers they are focused on lower dosage levels, increasing the importance of organic work in the vines, and focusing in on showcasing the unique micro-terroirs of each of the four villages. Chamery is where the majority of their vines are located and almost all of their fruit comes from Premier Cru soil. They farm near equal amounts of the three main Champagne grape varieties, as reflected in their cuvees, with a slight edge to more Pinot Noir. Their work in the vineyards achieved an HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale) for sustainability in 2019. The vines, which average 30 years in age, have never been treated with herbicides or chemicals and will be certified Organic soon. Adrien and Clémence also stick to their parents' traditional methods in the cellar, delicately pressing the grapes in small lots using a wooden basket press as well as generally eschewing malolactic conversion to preserve freshness and aromatics. Bertrand-Delespierre ‘Enfant de la Montagne’ 1er Cru Extra Brut NV Pinot Noir + Chardonnay + Pinot Meunier Chamery, Marne NV TASTING NOTES: Tart yellow plums, not quite fully ripe strawberries, snappy green apple and ginger spiced pie crust. Fully focused with a mouthful of minerality and persistent acid, but not at all a lean wine as the mouthfeel stretches wide across the tongue.

DECEMBER 2020 CLUB SELECTIONS NV DOMAINE FRANCIS ORBAN EXTRA BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE Léopold Orban was one of the first Récoltant-Manipulants (A producer who sources fruit exclusively from their own vineyards) in the small village of Leuvrigny in the 1920s. Léopold’s great grandson, Francois, took over as proprietor in 1999 at the young age of 19, tending 18 acres of 30-40 year old vineyards in and around the villages of Leuvrigny and Sainte-Gemme. Located in the heart of the Marne Valley, the domaine focuses on Pinot Meunier which comprises 90% of its vineyard holdings - ideal considering the sandy, clay-rich soils of the region suit the grape very well. O£ten considered merely a blending grape throughout other regions in Champagne, Pinot Meunier has pride of place in the Marne Valley and can o¤er wines of impressive depth, character and finesse. This 100% Pinot Meunier Extra Brut Rosé Champagne is a stunning example of this lesser known Champagne grape. The grapes were hand-harvested and directly pressed. The must was fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. It is a blend of 50% vintage wine from 2017 and 50% reserve wine from 2016, 2015 and 2014. 14% of the blend is Pinot Meunier still red wine which was added for color. It was aged for three years in bottle and given a dosage of 3 grams/L. This Champagne is bright pink in color with orange flecks and has persistent perlage. On the nose you’ll find fresh raspberries and white strawberry notes.
