Claire Gabrielle Nye Hunter Grahamstown, March 2016 4 SUMMARY This thesis begins with the observation that the Fourth Gospel presents a markedly different picture of Jesus compared to the one found in the Synoptic Gospels. This is clearly seen in the evangelist‘s selection of material, unique use of language and imagery, and his particular presentation of the Jesus tradition. How do we account for these differences? I begin by looking at what scholars have said concerning the community behind the Gospel, and highlight reasons to suggest that this was a community in crisis. The hypothesis I propose is that the Fourth Gospel is different to the Synoptics because the evangelist has reshaped the Jesus tradition in such a way as to address the spiritual and pastoral needs of this community in crisis. The core of this thesis is an exploration of the evangelist‘s strategic pastoral response to the Johannine community in crisis. Referring to the work done by the U S Department of Justice in their online publication of The Community Crisis Response Team Training Manual (Young 1998), I reflect on the effects of crises on spiritual beliefs. Young suggests that crises can serve as an attack on meaning systems and cause people to re-examine their beliefs. As a result, a person‘s faith can remain unchanged, or may be rejected, or it may become transformed (1998b). Applying these and other insights from the field of Social Work, Pastoral Counselling and Sociology, I show how we can use some of these concepts to understand something of what the evangelist is doing in the writing of John‘s Gospel. I present a simple three part model to demonstrate the evangelist‘s strategic pastoral response to the community in crisis – namely the reframing, transforming and deepening of faith. I select and exegete specific passages from the Gospel of John which I believe best illustrate these concepts. I end with what in my view is the glue that holds the evangelists three-fold pastoral response together – namely his presentation of ‗the other Paraclete‘. This, I suggest, is the evangelist‘s ultimate, unique and special contribution to the Jesus tradition. He (the Paraclete) is given as the rhetorical 5 fulcrum of John‘s strategic pastoral intervention to address the needs of his community in crisis. I conclude that one of the possible reasons for John‘s Gospel being so different to the Synoptics is because at the heart of the Gospel we hear the voice of a pastor – his Gospel is fundamentally a pastoral document. He has reshaped the Jesus tradition and written a strategic response to the pastoral and spiritual needs of his community in crisis. The meaning of the Chris- tian confession that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,”1 however, has produced exceedingly diverse interpretations for theological methods and content.2 With the arrival of feminist theo- logians in the middle of the twentieth century, the very credibility of the Christian tradition was retested for its content and relevance based on their insistence that there exists an inseparable causal relationship between gender experience, theological interpretations, and praxis.3 Spe- cifically, feminist theologians argue that orthodox Christology reflects predominantly androcentric patriarchal ideology and therefore has failed to communicate Jesus’ iconoclastic, subversive teaching and life against status systems, especially within religious communities. And the scent of your breath like apples, And your kisses like the best wine that Goes down smoothly Gliding over lips and teeth…” Song of Songs, Chapter 7, Verses 9−10 The Song of Songs is a delightfully erotic, sensual dance between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is almost by definition, a statement of a sexually healthy relationship: the lovers’ desire for each other is mutual; their passion is mutual; their fulfillment is mutual. The emphasis is on passion and intimacy; there is no discussion of marriage or fertility. After twenty years as a sexuality educator and advocate for sexual justice, I began to study for the ministry. In May 2003, after nearly seven years of intense preparation, I was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister. People are often surprised to find out that I identify myself as a sexologist and a minister, believing that the combination is an oxymoron because sex and spirit are generally regarded as so separate in the culture. But, my call to ministry grows out of my belief that our spirituality is one of nature’s most life fulfilling and life giving gifts, and that our sexuality and spirituality are inexorably linked. Many sexologists are wary of organized religion. We have been bruised in our struggles with politically active Christian conservatives in battles about abortion, sexuality education, and sexual orientation. We have had personal experiences with organized religion that have alienated us, or clients whose sexuality has been damaged by religious teaching.

King Beyond his*2 own historical embodiment and the memories of those who knew him*, Jesus/Christ3 has led an extraordinarily robust afterlife as a paradigmatic figure whose diverse representations have affected the social, psychological, intimate, and institutional lives of millions of people across two millennia. Much of that legacy continues to impact the gravest social policies, deeply entrenched theological controversies, and the nebulous intricacies of human relations and feelings. Urgent, even life and death issues continue to be at stake. Contemporary scholarship on the gender and sexuality of Jesus/Christ belongs to this afterlife. Many approaches to this expansive topic are possible. The goal here is not to recover “the real Jesus.” Little can be said specifically about the material body of Jesus except that he* was cut in circumcision and pierced in crucifixion.
