1 As the president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, I am excited as we embark on the search for the next president of the University of Iowa. Hiring a president is one of the most critical functions of the Board of Regents, and finding the next outstanding leader is the next step in continuing the upward trajectory of the UI.

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, is the governing body for Iowa’s public universities, which include the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and two special preschool/K–12 schools, the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.

The Board of Regents was created by the Iowa General Assembly in 1909 and comprises nine citizen volunteers appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Iowa Senate, serving staggered six-year terms. The board provides oversight; establishes system-wide policies; and approves academic programs, budgets, tuition and fees, and capital projects. The board also serves as trustee of the UI Hospitals & Clinics.

Kregel was appointed interim executive vice president and provost in July 2020, after serving as executive vice provost and senior associate provost for faculty from July 2019, and as associate provost for faculty from September 2014. He earned a bachelor’s degree and doctorate (physiology and biophysics) from the UI, and subsequently completed a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona. Kregel has served on numerous collegiate and university committees, and on steering committees for two campuswide cluster hire initiatives.
