Course Title : ADVANCED ILLUSTRATION
Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal
This change best suits the meeting of student needs to complete transfers, develop basic skills and produce portfolios. This change will alleviate a longstanding problem by making the titles and course descriptions accurate with current curriculum. The change will help to accommodate high student interest and they will clearly benefit by having an introductory and advanced levels. Curriculum improvements would go towards improving student portfolios that are required for admission into private colleges. Please see my justification results for the CSU Illustration major using assist.org.
SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)
1. Demonstrate refinement in the basic techniques, media, and tools used in the graphic arts industry. 2. Develop ideas and visual narratives from abstract and interpretive themes. 3. Verbally critique in a clear manner addressing the technical, personal, and real-world aspects of class artwork.
SPOs (Student Performance Objectives)
1. Create illustrations that demonstrate the development of technical skills with pencil, pen, brush and airbrush. 2. Create illustrations that demonstrate an understanding of basic design theory through the use of line, value, color and composition.
1. Create illustrations that show an ability to expressively communicate an abstract theme. 2. Create illustrations that demonstrate an ability to depict representational imagery through the analysis of light and shadow pattern on three-dimensional form.
1. Utilize the critique process to critically analyze a work's strengths and weaknesses in technique as well as content. 2. Produce projects that show an awareness of the various applications of illustration such as story, editorial, advertising and institutional.

Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance 1. Problem solving: Visually review all prelimary work executed in pencil for the projects. 2. Skill demonstration: Visually review all finished projects executed in pen and ink.
1. Examination: Review after completion of the project for clarity of communication. 2. Problem Solving: Check for inventiveness of idea. 1. Skill Demonstration: Class performance of a verbal critique. 2. Skill Demonstration: Review of works in student portfolio.
Assignments 1. "Scary Happy Freaky" project: Using these 3 words as your theme, create an interpretive narrative image of it using only black and white line, crowquill pen and ink, and in proportion to 8 1/2" x 11".
2. "Beginning Middle End" project: Using these 3 words as your theme, create an interpretive image of it using a monochromatic color scheme, avoiding typical 3 panel images as a solution. Use pen and ink and washes, gouache paint, prismacolor pencils, and or acrylics. It should be in proportion to 8 1/2" x 11".
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Catalog Description Refinement of media and techniques with an emphasis towards developing experimental uses. Emphasis on advanced problem solving by creating illustrations from abstract and personal themes. Projects will serve as portfolio pieces for specific illustration areas.
