Primary Colors The PRIMARY COLORS are red, blue and yellow and cannot be made from other colors. The word primary means “being first in time or sequence”. Red, yellow and blue are the first colors to use when making a color wheel which is why they are called the primary colors. Secondary Colors The SECONDARY COLORS are purple, green and orange. The word secondary means “second in rank or importance”. Purple, orange and green are the result of mixing the primary colors, which means they come second. Tertiary Colors TERTIARY COLORS are created when mixing a secondary color with its neighboring primary color. The word tertiary means “to be third in rank, order or sequence”. Complementary Colors COMPLEMENTARY COLORS are colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. • The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well. • Complementary colors are tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out. red + green yellow + purple orange + blue Warm and Cool Colors The color wheel can be divided in half with warm colors on one side and cool colors on the other.
