I am pleased to be in my second school year as PIAA District III Chairman. It is always fulfilling to work for the benefit of our schools’ student-athletes. We have a great team of dedicated people serving on the District III Committee, and a large number of equally dedicated people throughout the district’s 10-county jurisdiction who serve as game managers and support staff for our Championships. This year has been the most challenging year in recent memory for school districts – and all Pennsylvanians – in their ongoing battle against the novel coronavirus and its COVID-19 illness. The virus has disrupted the flow of daily life for many people, including those serving in our public and private schools. We are very proud of the way our schools and our students have reacted to the challenges presented during a pandemic. They have all developed and followed health and safety plans designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. School athletics have faced complex issues in dealing with COVID-19. District III has spent many hours discussing and implementing plans to provide for the safe return of students to education and for athletes to return to competition. The result of these efforts is what you see today: District III championships that were not a certainty in the summer of 2020. It took the dedication and efforts of many people to reach this point where our students are able to engage in PIAA post-season action. We are very happy that our students have the opportunity to qualify for and play in our championship contests. We realize that our decisions, including reducing the number of qualifiers to most of our winter sports championships, do not please everyone. We had to make all of our decisions based on the welfare of our student-athletes while still providing the district and PIAA competition they have come to expect. At all times during this ever-changing process of determining our playoffs, we tried to be as fair and as equitable to all schools in our district. That is always one of our most important goals in PIAA District III. We wish that this year’s championship series was no different than in years past, contests that fully involved not just athletes, but other students, spectators and the community at-large. Reducing the number of qualifiers and the spectators who observe the contests has been frustrating for all. But we did what was required by the extraordinary circumstances presented to us. While many people cannot attend our championships as they freely could in the past, we hope that our new online programs and school-based online coverage of our events will enable people to engage with our athletes this winter, even from afar. Thank you for supporting our student-athletes in District III.
