As a reminder, parents, remember that students are in school on Wednesday, April 17 for a snow make up day. Students are off beginning Thursday, April 18. Students return to school on Tuesday, April 23. This year is certainly moving quickly and will soon be at a close. This time of the year is always extremely busy, with many events and activities. Please try to attend one of our upcoming spring concerts, stop by and cheer on one of our spring sports teams or come out to our Prom Parade to participate in one of our many time-honored traditions. Congratulations to Dr. Giles, Miss Gabby Hines, the Musical Director and the cast, pit orchestra members and the crew of our musical, “Willy Wonka”. Also, a big thank you to our Art Department for their assistance on the set design. The production was outstanding. It was wonderful to see so many future high school students filling supporting roles in our cast. What a wonderful community event. Thank you, parents and community, for your continued support of performing arts at the high school. On Thursday, April 11, several of our students were invited to West Chester University to celebrate the three-year partnership that the Coatesville Area School District and Wells Fargo had with the University. Students at the high school were provided with after school tutoring from students from the university every Tuesday and Thursday for three years. In addition, Wells Fargo and West Chester University supported an elementary literacy initiative. Our students along with Mr. Jeff Colf, Assistant Principal went to presentation at the University. Dr. Taschner, Superintendent of Schools gave an address and spoke about the partnership at the event. Thank you, West Chester University and Wells Fargo, for their commitment and support. Students in Mrs. Warren-Ward’s Marine Biology class are studying the body systems of crayfish and other various animals through dissection. Students are working collaboratively to conduct these students and noting their findings. This type of research and exploratory learning is helping our classrooms to become more student centered. Watching students make new discoveries and learning about different systems is exciting. Learning through collaboration and conversation is helping each member of the class have a voice and to take part in the activity. Parents of juniors, some of the members of the class will have to take Keystone Exams in Biology, Algebra or Literature because they have not yet reached proficiency. While Keystone Exams do not become a graduation requirement until 2022, juniors are still required to attain proficiency. Testing will begin on May 13 and May 14 with Biology. Literature testing will begin on Wednesday, May 15 and May 16. Finally, Algebra testing will be given on May 20 and 21. All TCHS and DCCC students who have not attained proficiency should remain in the building for testing. Last week, Mr. Carpenter’s and Mr. Tassoni’s American Government classes took a field trip to the U.S. Constitution Center in Philadelphia to continue their studies of the workings of the American governmental system. Students toured the museum, learning about the founding fathers of this country. They enjoyed some time in the statue gallery as you can see. Field trips are a great extension of classroom learning. They provide real-time examples of historical sites and documents. Thank you to the teachers who organized this trip. The junior Prom, “Shanghai” will be held on Saturday, April 27th from 7:00 – 10:30 PM in the CASH cafeteria. Please be reminded that attendance at both the Junior and Senior Proms are a privilege. Administration reserves the right to deny admission to the prom for any student who does not comply with school rules and policies. Tickets will go on sale soon in the school store, single tickets $60 and couples $85 which provides a sit-down dinner, dancing and photobooth. Remember that students need to present photo ID to purchase tickets for the prom. If your student is planning on taking a guest from another school or a graduate, the student must be 20 years old or under. Also, please be reminded that the proms are formal affairs and as such require formal attire to attend. The student dress code policy will be upheld.     Career and Technical Student Organizations Serving Career and Technical Education Students in Pennsylvania 1 Dear CTSO Leaders, As the leader of a statewide trade association dedicated to the growth and development of the technology industry in Pennsylvania, I am keenly aware of the need for a highly-skilled, well-trained, and motivated workforce. At the Technology Council of Pennsylvania, we are strong advocates for advancements in and the promotion of S.T.E.M. education, as well as career and technical training, in order to prepare our young people to succeed in the 21st Century, global economy. That is why we support the work of Pennsylvania’s Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) and the critical role they play in today’s education community. For nearly 70 years, CTSOs have been able to extend teaching and learning through a variety of targeted programs, public-private partnerships and leadership development initiatives that produce technically advanced, employable students to meet the needs of this country’s diverse employer base. Today, the work of CTSOs has never been more valuable as our economy demands workers with a strong understanding of science, technology, engineering and math concepts as well as hands-on technical expertise. The co-curricular approach of CTSOs uniquely positions these organizations to enhance student skill sets and better prepare them to excel in their chosen careers. In order for Pennsylvania and the United States to not only compete, but succeed on a global stage, we need to ensure that the very technology and innovation companies that are driving this global economy have the availability of a well-qualified workforce.

No deficiencies were identified during the exercise. Five (5) Areas Requiring Corrective Action (ARCAs) were identified and successfully re-demonstrated. Five (5) planning issues were identified with four (4) remaining open. Based on the results of the exercise and a review of the offsite radiological emergency response plans and procedures submitted, FEMA Region III has determined they are adequate and there is reasonable assurance they can be implemented, as demonstrated during this exercise. Mr. McCune, Board President, called the meeting to order and Manuella Paschoalino and Kush Patel of Starkweather Elementary School led the public in the Pledge of Allegiance. II.     Chester County Food Bank ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 DOING MORE | A Message from our Board Chairman As we reflect on the past year, it becomes obvious that we are making tremendous strides in alleviating hunger in our communities. All of our “numbers” are up. We distributed more than 1.7 million pounds of food and greatly increased the fresh food that we grew and purchased at auction to over 500,000 pounds. We are providing food to more food cupboards and meal sites than ever before. Our Raised Bed Gardens are now over 400 and in 22 schools and we were able to double the participants in our Food Backpack program to 903 students. But we are more than numbers. Each area of growth represents more families who no longer have to struggle with hunger… more children who can enjoy their childhood free from strife. Thanks to our friends in the community, we are able to do more. Our corporate sponsors have re- sponded to our needs with donations, food drives, and volunteers. The support of our donors has allowed us to expand our programs, add a full-time food manager, second driver, and community outreach person. This growth has been possible as a result of a dedicated Board, strong management, a caring community, and an ever increasing support of volunteers. Many, many thanks to all!
