9th Annual Make Room For Debate Today’s Debaters. Tomorrow’s Leaders. Tuesday, September 15, 2020 A Virtual Experience Welcome from Welcome to our 9th Annual Make Room for Debate luncheon. We are delighted you’ve virtually joined us to Support Student Success, to help Cultivate Future Leaders, and contribute to Building a Stronger Chicago. Our Champion of Debate, Wintrust Founder and CEO, Ed Wehmer is being honored today for his dedication, belief, and investment in youth and Chicago. Chicago Debates is bridging the opportunity gap for Chicago Public School (CPS) students by providing them with an after-school program that supports their academic, career, and leadership success. Competitive debate strengthens reading, teaches content knowledge and develops 21st century skills like research, analytical, and critical thinking. It also supports students’ social/emotional development. Debate is research proven to increase GPAs, graduation rates, college readiness and school engagement. Chicago Debates is celebrating 23 years of providing debate to students in partnership with Chicago Public Schools. Starting with just five schools and 35 students in 1997, our goal this year is to serve over 1700 students across 95 Chicago Public Schools. We support middle and high school students in CPS, with a focus on high poverty areas where the need is the greatest. Last year, 78% of our students attended a Title I School, meaning 50% or more of the students received free or reduced lunch. Today, you will experience just how impactful debate is as you hear directly from students whose lives have been transformed by the activity. Thank you to our event sponsors and to each of you for supporting Chicago Debates and investing in our future leaders.
