He was the son of a gardener, Richard Thomas, and Emily Barman from Tenterden, an area of Kent where many people of the Barman name still live. Charles had two brothers, Richard and George, and a younger sister, Elsie. As a boy, he attended the local primary school at Canterbury and attended services at the Cathedral. -

Discriminatory Zoning in Colonial Hong Kong: A r eview of the post-war literature and some f ur ther evidence f or an economic theor y of discr imination Abstract TYPE OF PAPER: RESEARCH PAPER STRUCTURED ABSTRACT Purpose: This paper argues that racially discriminatory zoning in Colonial Hong Kong could have been a form of protectionism driven by economic considerations. Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper was based on a review of the relevant ordinances, literature, and public information, notably data obtained from the Land Registry and telephone directories. Findings: This paper reveals that many writings on racial matters in Hong Kong were not a correct interpretation or presentation of facts. It shows that after the repeal of the discriminatory laws in 1946r, an increasing number of people, both Chinese and European, were living in the Peak district. Besides, Chinese were found to be acquiring land even under the discriminatory law for Barker Road during the mid-1920s and became, after 1946, the majority landlords by the mid-1970s. This testifies to the argument that the Chinese could compete economically with Europeans for prime residential premises in Hong Kong. Research Implications: This paper lends further support to the Lawrence-Marco proposition raised in Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design by Lai and Yu (2001), which regards segregation zoning as a means to reduce the effective demand of an economically resourceful social group. Practical Implications: This paper shows how title documents for land and telephone directories can be used to measure the degree of racial segregation. Originality/Value: This paper is the first attempt to systematically re-interpret English literature on racially discriminatory zoning in Hong Kong’s Peak area using reliable public information from Crown Leases and telephone directories. -

Awareness of Hong Kong’s built heritage and its value is considered to have begun to increase around the time of the end of British rule. The change in Hong Kong’s sovereignty in 1997 prompted a search for its own identity, because while no longer under British rule, and not being nor becoming entirely Chinese, it was not immediately obvious what the emerging Hong Kong should put forward as its cultural identity. The question since that time has also become economically pertinent, as Hong Kong has developed into a major Asian tourist destination. As cultural tourism could be developed into one of the pillars of Hong Kong’s leisure economy, debate emerged on its identity and the built heritage it reflects. This article addresses the popular assumption that before 1997, heritage had been of little interest to Hong Kong’s governments, as articulated by Yung and Chan (2011), Henderson (2001) and Cheung (1999). This negligence was explained by the fact that Hong Kong’s population was growing exponentially through several waves of large-scale immigration, while being under an obviously temporary British government. This resulted in a heterogeneous population (Henderson, 2001) which had just migrated there and was more concerned about access to housing, employment and transportation than the history of the lands they were about to inhabit (Yung and Chan, 2011, 459). -

Historic Building Appraisal 1 Tsang Tai Uk Sha Tin, N.T. Tsang Tai Uk (曾大屋, literally the Big Mansion of the Tsang Family) is also Historical called Shan Ha Wai (山廈圍, literally, Walled Village at the Foothill). Its Interest construction was started in 1847 and completed in 1867. Measuring 45 metres by 137 metres, it was built by Tsang Koon-man (曾貫萬, 1808-1894), nicknamed Tsang Sam-li (曾三利), who was a Hakka (客家) originated from Wuhua (五華) of Guangdong (廣東) province which was famous for producing masons. He came to Hong Kong from Wuhua working as a quarryman at the age of 16 in Cha Kwo Ling (茶果嶺) and Shaukiwan (筲箕灣). He set up his quarry business in Shaukiwan having his shop called Sam Lee Quarry (三利石行). Due to the large demand for building stone when Hong Kong was developed as a city since it became a ceded territory of Britain in 1841, he made huge profit. He bought land in Sha Tin from the Tsangs and built the village. The completed village accommodated around 100 residential units for his family and descendents. It was a shelter of some 500 refugees during the Second World War and the name of Tsang Tai Uk has since been adopted. The sizable and huge fortified village is a typical Hakka three-hall-four-row Architectural (三堂四横) walled village. It is in a Qing (清) vernacular design having a Merit symmetrical layout with the main entrance, entrance hall, middle hall and main hall at the central axis. Two other entrances are to either side of the front wall. -

TRAFFIC SURVEY AND SUPPORT DIVISION August 2019 © THE GOVERNMENT OF THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION SUMMARY During the year 2018, the annual average daily traffic (A.A.D.T.) in the territory showed the following changes as compared with that of 2017: General There were 784 434 vehicles licensed in Hong Kong at the end of 2018, representing an increase of 2.38% when compared with the corresponding figure in 2017. This total accounted for 90.7% of the number of registered vehicles. The highest percentage increase was found in private light bus, with a growth of 9.0%. There were 565 213 private cars licensed at the end of 2018. The number of franchised buses licensed was 6 151, an increase of 2.8% over 2017. The total number of goods vehicles licensed in 2018 was 117 567, showing an increase of 2.5% over 2017. During the year, road travel in the territory amounted to 38.25 million vehicle- kilometres per day. Of this total, 6.00 million vehicle-kilometres occurred on Hong Kong Island while 8.53 million vehicle-kilometres and 23.72 million vehicle- kilometres occurred in Kowloon and the New Territories respectively.
