AUTO-ACCRETION POWERED BY MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS IN THE VENETIAN LAGOON By: Jessica Balesano Jodi Lowell March 10, 2008 AUTO-ACCRETION POWERED BY MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS IN THE VENETIAN LAGOON Jessica Balesano Jodi Lowell Submitted: March 10, 2008 Executive Summary Venice, Italy is a city known for its beautiful architecture, culture, and unique lifestyle. What adds to the romance of the city and sets it apart from all of the others are the canals flowing between the different historical buildings. These canals are the natural dividers for the 110 mud flat islands that make up Venice and are the cornerstone for Venetian life. Not only are the canals the main mode of transportation, but they are also the foundation for all of the buildings along the canals. The walls lining the canals are subjected to stresses inflicted due to their location and contact with the canal waters. These walls are deteriorating, leaving weak building structures and an aesthetically unpleasing appearance. There are many sources of the canal wall damage beyond the mere age of the buildings and materials; one of these sources is moto ondoso, or damage from boat wake. In open waters, the wake from boats can dissipate over a large area. In the canals and narrow waterways in the Venetian lagoon, however, there is less space and opportunity for the kinetic energy of the wave to be reduced before it strikes the canal walls. The impact causes disintegration of the existing wall material and brick mortar. Figure 1 is an example of the damage inflicted by moto ondoso.

Jewitt, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 Landscape painting assumed a new prominence in Venetian painting between the late fifteenth to early sixteenth century: this study aims to understand why and how this happened. It begins by redefining the conception of landscape in Renaissance Italy and then examines several ambitious easel paintings produced by major Venetian painters, beginning with Giovanni Bellini’s (c.1431- 36-1516) St. Francis in the Desert (c.1475), that give landscape a far more significant role than previously seen in comparable commissions by their peers, or even in their own work. After an introductory chapter reconsidering all previous hypotheses regarding Venetian painters’ reputations as accomplished landscape painters, it is divided into four chronologically arranged case study chapters.

Examining the data collected by prior IQP groups, we agreed on a definition of “public art” that included not only decorative pieces but also structural and functional ones. Our next task was to incorporate missing objects into the database. We systematically searched every public street on the lagoon islands of Burano, Mazzorbo, Murano and Torcello, recording condition data for the pieces found and updating the database with the new information.

Treasures of Milan and Venice 31 March 2019 River Countess Uniworld Waterways As Rudy Bolasko from Cruise Critic says, "A cruise on the Po River is not like other European river cruises. Uniworld's new itinerary has fewer ports and more coach trips, and half the week is spent in one city. But when that one city is Venice, and you've got a room on the waterfront, who's complaining? River Countess passengers also benefit from some very valuable perks, including queue-skipping and after-hours viewings of main attractions, private water-taxi transfers and scenic cruising around the Venetian Lagoon. For the four excursions accessed by road, the driving time is only one to two hours and well worth the trip to see some wonderful inland destinations, such as Verona and Bologna. The lack of sailing days might even suit couples who can't agree whether to do Italy by boat or bus, or if one partner is not as fanatical about cruising. Only a couple of other European companies (CroisiEurope and European Waterways) offer Po river cruises. Uniworld's offering is the most luxurious." Treasures of Milan and Venice sails 31 March 2019. The itinerary visits Milan, Verona, Venice, Padua, Bologna, Ferrara, Chioggia, Burano, Torcello and of course Venice for the most part. You are actually in a floating boutique hotel with day trips out to other areas of the region. A full itinerary is included at the end of this email. There are 4 categories available.
